SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  CACOPHONY – harsh or discordant sound;
dissonance. The cacophony of all of the instruments of the orchestra
tuning up at the same time grated on my nerves.

FOR JUNIORS
Summer Internship at UCSF. If you are interested in a
research-intensive summer internship, the Department of Pediatrics at
UCSF has an excellent program to introduce you to the world of science.
You will work in a laboratory and assigned a designated research
project while working with a mentor, attend seminars, tour UCSF and
other universities. UCSF is looking for motivated and responsible
students and are particularly encouraging applications from women,
underrepresented minorities and talented and motivated students who
have experienced economic or other challenges that might limit their
ability to achieve these academic and career goals. Applications are
available in D221. An information session on the program will be held
on Saturday, December 8 at 1:00 pm at UCSF, 3333 California St., SF.
Application deadline: January 28.

FOR SENIORS
FINANCIAL AID – now is the time to start working on financial aid
applications and continue (or start) on scholarship applications. If
you haven’t done so already, each student and one parent must get a PIN
number so that you can apply online for the FAFSA. It takes only a few
minutes by filling out the form at www.pin.ed.gov . Then start
gathering a list of what forms each of your colleges requires for their
financial aid application as well as their deadlines. This can almost
always be found on each school’s financial aid website. For the
community colleges, UC’s and Cal States, the only form required is the
FAFSA and it is due no later than March 2 (but PLEASE don’t wait that
long). For a list of workshops we are holding on filling out the FAFSA
as well as other helpful information, go to
http://bhs.berkeley.net/index.php?page=home-2 and click on either
“Scholarships” or “Financial Aid” or “Financial Aid Workshops.” If you
have questions, please see me or Ms. Price any day at lunch or after
school.

Applying for financial aid? Pick up your copy of the Fund Your Future
Workshop in the College/Career Center. This easy to read pamphlet
contains nearly everything you need to know about applying for
financial aid and Cal Grants. Get yours now!
