FOR ALL STUDENTS
*Paid internship opportunity - Zirana ( http://www.zirana.com), a Web
2.0 company based in Cupertino, focuses on developing online
communities for mid-sized cities across the US. They provide local
news, events, reviews on local merchants, information about local
schools and local groups. They are looking for interns to work from
home as school correspondents and photo journalists to write articles
and/or take pictures about the activities in their school and local
events. The interns should have good communication and writing skills
and have interest in reporting and journalism. Prior experience in
writing for school magazine/newspaper or yearbook is desired. This
opportunity will help students improve their reporting skills and
website design skills. In addition, they will learn skills in different
aspects of marketing (content creation, messaging and promotion). For

JUNIORS - Summer Internship at UCSF. If you are interested in a
research-intensive summer internship, the Department of Pediatrics at
UCSF has an excellent program to introduce you to the world of science.
You will work in a laboratory and assigned a designated research
project while working with a mentor, attend seminars, tour UCSF and
other universities. UCSF is looking for motivated and responsible
students and are particularly encouraging applications from women,
underrepresented minorities and talented and motivated students who
have experienced economic or other challenges that might limit their
ability to achieve these academic and career goals. Applications are
available in D221. An information session on the program will be held
on Saturday, December 8 at 1:00 pm at UCSF, 3333 California St., SF.

Essay contest for Native American students. Five first place winners
will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. in June 2008
to visit the National Museum of the American Indian, as well as a
scholarship ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. For more information, go to

Do you need to brush up on your basic skills? Laney College is
offering bridge courses in writing (Mondays, 6-9pm) and math

JUNIORS AND SENIORS – UC Irvine offers a Stay-Over Program for students
at least 16 years old. Participants stay the night in the residence
halls with a current UCI student, attend classes, eat in the dining
commons and more. Cost is $25 to pay for meals and a small number of
scholarships are available. Apply early as the program fills up.

Soroptimist Award – Open to women ages 14-17 who have demonstrated
initiative in both identifying a problem and trying to solve it, who is
committed to making the world a better place, who has had significant
and noteworthy accomplishments as a volunteer. $1,000 award to 28

1.
Are you interested in studying abroad? The World Affairs Council is
offering three scholarships of approximately $4,000 each for high
school students to study abroad for a semester, an academic year or for
the summer in one of 32 participating countries. The scholarship is
open to all high school students in Northern California with an
unweighted 3.0 GPA or above whose birthdays fall between April 1989 and
July 1993. An informational meeting will be held on Thursday, December
6 at 5:00 pm at the World Affairs Council office, 312 Sutter St., Suite

JOBS
East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is currently accepting
applications for the Worker Trainee Program. This program provides an
opportunity to gain valuable work experience through part-time work in
various District units, for entry-level jobs at the District or in
other organizations and to provide students with income. The part-time
job will be located in downtown Oakland. Applications available in

FOR SENIORS
*10 MORE DAYS UNTIL THE UC APPLICATION DEADLINE AND THE PRIORITY
DEADLINE FOR THE CAL STATES. THIS IS THE FINAL DEADLINE FOR MANY CAL
STATE CAMPUSES.
*Financial Aid Part 2 – Tuesday, December 4, 6:30-8:30 pm, Berkeley
High library (English) and College/Career Center (Spanish).
Representatives from the UC Berkeley financial aid office will explain
how to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA),
which is required to apply for financial aid by all U.S. colleges and
universities. This is a Cash for College event, so if more than 25
seniors are present, one will win a $1,000 scholarship. Because this
meeting will be very crowded, we ask that only senior families attend.
Despite rumors floating around Berkeley High, the UC’s do not require
official transcripts. Please do not fill out Transcript Request Forms
for any of the UC campuses.

DVD’s are now available for you to borrow. Contact Angela Price at

APPLY TO THE UC’S AND CAL STATES NOW! The UC application is now
available online at http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/ .
The first day to submit your application is November 1. The Cal State
application is available at www.csumentor.edu . You can start the
applications and save them as you go. Sign up to attend the
application workshops where you can get one-on-one help with both
applications. All workshops will be held in the BHS library.

COLLEGE VISITS
Seniors, sign up in D221 to attend college presentations. All
presentations will be held in the College/Career Center. You must also
pick up an authorization form for your teacher to sign so that you may
miss his or her class. This is a great opportunity to find out more
about what individual colleges have to offer as well as to meet the
admission officer who may be reading your application. Students may
not attend more than 10 college visits during the school year.

ESSAY READERS AND WORKSHOPS
ESSAY READER SCHEDULE - Essay readers will be available in the
College/Career Center every day from 8:00 to 9:00 at lunch and after
3:15. They will also be available during 6th periods on Monday,
Tuesday and Thursday. No sign-ups are necessary; just bring your essay
draft.
SAT/ACT TEST DATES – December 26 is the regular registration deadline
for the January 26 SAT and SAT subject tests. Friday, January 4 is the
regular registration deadline for the February 9 ACT test. Fee waivers
for low income students are available in D221.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Syracuse University's School of Architecture is seeking young men and
women of color interested in pursuing a five year professional degree
in Architecture. Ten scholarships covering all education costs are
available. Syracuse University 's School of Architecture has a great
reputation and this is a terrific opportunity. For more information,

Skidmore College offers a scholarship of $10,000 per year to talented
music students interested in majoring in any academic area. For more

winners will be chosen by audition. Up to four scholarships will be
awarded.
Gates Millennium Scholarship – open to low income, high achieving
African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific
Islander American, and Hispanic American students who are a citizen,
national or legal permanent resident of the US, have a minimum
cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale and have demonstrated leadership
abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular
or other activities. Scholarship covers all costs of a college
education which are unmet through the financial aid package or other
scholarships. The scholarship also covers graduate school for selected
majors. Deadline: December 31 if applying by mail, January 11 if
applying online. Applications are available in D221 and at
www.gmsp.org .
