SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  INVECTIVE - an insult or abuse in speech.  Scott
yelled an invective across the room at his teacher, resulting in an
immediate trip to OCI.  

FOR ALL STUDENTS
*Essay contest for Native American students.  Five first place winners
will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. in June 2008
to visit the National Museum of the American Indian, as well as a
scholarship ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.  For more information, go

*Do you need to brush up on your basic skills?  Laney College is
offering bridge courses in writing (Mondays, 6-9pm) and math
(Thursdays, 6-9 pm).  For more information, call 464-3411.  

*JUNIORS AND SENIORS - UC Irvine offers a Stay-Over Program for
students at least 16 years old.  Participants stay the night in the
residence halls with a current UCI student, attend classes, eat in the
dining commons and more.  Cost is $25 to pay for meals and a small
number of scholarships are available.  Apply early as the program

The Sustainable Endowment Institute grades colleges on an A-F school
on sustainable practices.  You can look at either the entire report by

People's Test Preparation Service is offering a FREE mock SAT this
Saturday, November 17, from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm at UC Berkeley, 213
Wheeler Hall.  This is great practice for the real thing without
sharing your scores with colleges and at no cost to you.

SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS - Tuesday, November 20 at lunch, place to be
announced, representatives from the Davis Scholarship Committee will
be here to answer questions about the Davis Scholarship. The Davis
Scholarship program is a full scholarship to attend a United World
College at one of their 12 campuses world wide.  The United World
Colleges are international schools where high school students from all
over the world study for the full international baccalaureate.  The
campuses are located in many countries including Swaziland, India,
Norway, Hong Kong and Singapore. The scholarships cover tuition, room
and board as well as most of the costs associated with attending a UWC
and can even include airfare.  Come listen to the representatives, who
are former students, discuss the program, their experiences and how to

Soroptimist Award - Open to women ages 14-17 who have demonstrated
initiative in both identifying a problem and trying to solve it, who
is committed to making the world a better place, who has had
significant and noteworthy accomplishments as a volunteer.  $1,000
award to 28 winners.  Applications available in D221.  Received
Deadline:  December 1.  

Are you interested in studying abroad?  The World Affairs Council is
offering three scholarships of approximately $4,000 each for high
school students to study abroad for a semester, an academic year or
for the summer in one of 32 participating countries.  The scholarship
is open to all high school students in Northern California with an
unweighted 3.0 GPA or above whose birthdays fall between April 1989
and July 1993.  An informational meeting will be held on Thursday,
December 6 at 5:00 pm at the World Affairs Council office, 312 Sutter
St., Suite 200, San Francisco.  For more information and an

JOBS 
East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is currently accepting
applications for the Worker Trainee Program.  This program provides an
opportunity to gain valuable work experience through part-time work in
various District units, for entry-level jobs at the District or in
other organizations and to provide students with income.  The
part-time job will be located in downtown Oakland.  Applications
available in D221.  Application deadline - November 30.  For more

FOR SENIORS
Despite rumors floating around Berkeley High, the UC's do not require
official transcripts.  Please do not fill out Transcript Request Forms
for any of the UC campuses.  

Berkeley Experience Program - The Berkeley Experience Program welcomes
high school seniors onto the UC Berkeley campus. Each student will be
paired with a current Alumni Scholar in his/her potential area of
study. This program allows high school seniors to get a taste of life
at Berkeley, ask any questions they might have, attend a college
application workshop, sit in on classes and speak with alumni and
faculty.  This year's BEP dates:  November 14 and November 21, 8:00
am-8:00 pm.  Cost: $25 including meals.  For more information and to

APPLY TO THE UC'S AND CAL STATES NOW! The UC application is now
available online at http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/
.  The first day to submit your application is November 1. The Cal
State application is available at www.csumentor.edu .  You can start
the applications and save them as you go.  Sign up to attend the
application workshops where you can get one-on-one help with both
applications.  All workshops will be held in the BHS library.

COUNSELOR RECOMMENDATION FORMS AND ENVELOPES - if you are applying to
a school that requires a counselor recommendation, your counselor
recommendation forms (Secondary School Report Forms), transcript
request forms and envelopes (with $1.14 in postage stamps) are were
due on November 8.  If you have not turned these in, please see one of
us in the College/Career Center immediately.

COLLEGE VISITS
Seniors, sign up in D221 to attend college presentations.  All
presentations will be held in the College/Career Center.  You must
also pick up an authorization form for your teacher to sign so that
you may miss his or her class.  This is a great opportunity to find
out more about what individual colleges have to offer as well as to
meet the admission officer who may be reading your application.
Students may not attend more than 10 college visits during the school

ESSAY READERS AND WORKSHOPS
ESSAY READER SCHEDULE - Essay readers will be available in the
College/Career Center every day from 8:00 to 9:00 at lunch and after
3:15.  They will also be available during 6th periods on Monday,
Tuesday and Thursday.  No sign-ups are necessary; just bring your
essay draft. 

SAT/ACT TEST DATES - Thursday, November 15 is the late registration
deadline for the December 8 ACT test. This is the last test which the
UC's and some CSU campuses will accept.  December 26 is the regular
registration deadline for the January 26 SAT and SAT subject tests.
Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.   

SCHOLARSHIPS
*Syracuse University's School of Architecture is seeking young men and
women of color interested in pursuing a five year professional degree
in Architecture. Ten scholarships covering all education costs are
available.  Syracuse University 's School of Architecture has a great
reputation and this is a terrific opportunity. For more information,

Skidmore College offers a scholarship of $10,000 per year to talented
music students interested in majoring in any academic area.  For more

Scholarship winners will be chosen by audition.  Up to four
scholarships will be awarded.

Gates Millennium Scholarship - open to low income, high achieving
African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific
Islander American, and Hispanic American students who are a citizen,
national or legal permanent resident of the US, have a minimum
cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale and have demonstrated leadership
abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular
or other activities.  Scholarship covers all costs of a college
education which are unmet through the financial aid package or other
scholarships.  The scholarship also covers graduate school for
selected majors.  Deadline:  December 31 if applying by mail, January
11 if applying online.  Applications are available in D221 and at
www.gmsp.org .
