SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  HEDONISM – single-minded pursuit of pleasure.  
The voters in Senator Dingleberry’s state objected to his hedonistic 
practices such as $300 lunches, 30-week vacations and a personal 
masseuse.

FOR ALL STUDENTS
PREPARING FOR COLLEGE SEMINAR - Saturday, November 10, 9:00-11:00 am - 
The USC Black Alumni Association is offering a free seminar on 
preparing for college, open to all middle and high school students and 
their parents. The seminar will be held at California State University 
East Bay, Oakland Professional Development and Conference Center, 1000 
Broadway, Suite 109 (Entrance on 11th Street, @ Street Level) in 
Oakland.  Priority seating will be given to those who RSVP by 
Wednesday, November 7 at uscbaanorth at gmail.com or 510-635-5922.

Are you interested in studying abroad?  The World Affairs Council is 
offering three scholarships of approximately $4,000 each for high 
school students to study abroad for a semester, an academic year or for 
the summer in one of 32 participating countries.  The scholarship is 
open to all high school students in Northern California with an 
unweighted 3.0 GPA or above whose birthdays fall between April 1989 and 
July 1993.  An informational meeting will be held on Thursday, December 
6 at 5:00 pm at the World Affairs Council office, 312 Sutter St., Suite

JOBS
The Federal Aviation Association is taking applications for air traffic 
controller school. Students must be at least 18 years old.  You need 
only a high school diploma to apply.  For more information, go to FAA's

Emeryville Recreation Center is looking for after-school Recreation 
Leaders, Mon-Wed. and Friday, 3-6:00 pm and Thursday, 1:30-6:00 pm.

FOR SENIORS
*Despite rumors floating around Berkeley High, the UC’s do not require 
official transcripts.  Please do not fill out Transcript Request Forms 
for any of the UC campuses.

Berkeley Experience Program - The Berkeley Experience Program welcomes 
high school seniors onto the UC Berkeley campus. Each student will be 
paired with a current Alumni Scholar in his/her potential area of 
study. This program allows high school seniors to get a taste of life 
at Berkeley, ask any questions they might have, attend a college 
application workshop, sit in on classes and speak with alumni and 
faculty.  This year's BEP dates:  November 14 and November 21, 8:00 
am-8:00 pm.  Cost: $25 including meals.  For more information and to

APPLY TO THE UC’S AND CAL STATES NOW! The UC application is now 
available online at http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/ . 
  The first day to submit your application is November 1. The Cal State 
application is available at www.csumentor.edu .  You can start the 
applications and save them as you go.  Sign up to attend the 
application workshops where you can get one-on-one help with both 
applications.  All workshops will be held in the BHS library.

COUNSELOR RECOMMENDATION FORMS – DUE THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8 – if you are 
applying to a school that requires a counselor recommendation, your 
counselor recommendation forms (Secondary School Report Forms), 
transcript request forms and envelopes (with $1.14 in postage stamps) 
are due one month prior to your earliest deadline, but no later than 
November 8.  If you have questions about the format of these forms or 
what is needed, please see one of us in the College/Career Center.

Are you applying to UC Davis?  If you have at least a 3.5 UC GPA, you 
may be eligible for the Aggie Alumni Scholarship.  Go to

information.  Deadline:  February 1.

COLLEGE VISITS
Seniors, sign up in D221 to attend college presentations.  All 
presentations will be held in the College/Career Center.  You must also 
pick up an authorization form for your teacher to sign so that you may 
miss his or her class.  This is a great opportunity to find out more 
about what individual colleges have to offer as well as to meet the 
admission officer who may be reading your application.   Students may 
not attend more than 10 college visits during the school year.   A

ESSAY READERS AND WORKSHOPS
ESSAY READER SCHEDULE - Essay readers will be available in the 
College/Career Center every day from 8:00 to 9:00 at lunch and after 
3:15.  They will also be available during 6th periods on Monday, 
Tuesday and Thursday.  No sign-ups are necessary; just bring your essay 
draft.

Essay writing workshops:
Students must sign up to attend.
Wed., 11/7, 7:30 am  – College Career Center

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – Thursday, November 8 is the late registration 
deadline for the December 1 SAT and SAT subject tests.  Thursday, 
November 15 is the late registration deadline for the December 8 ACT 
test. These are the last tests which the UC’s and some CSU campuses 
will accept.  Fee waivers for low income students are available in 
D221.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Mahatma Rice Scholarship Program – Open to graduating seniors and write 
an essay of 150 to 250 words on the topic: How will your college 
education help you to achieve your lifetime goals? Essays will be 
judged on originality, conciseness, grammar and spelling.  For the 
entry form, go to www.mahatmarice.com/scholarship .  Five $2,000 
scholarships will be awarded.  Deadline: February 15.

Skidmore College offers a scholarship of $10,000 per year to talented 
music students interested in majoring in any academic area.  For more 
information, go to www.skidmore.edu/filenescholarship or contact 
Michele Koskinen at 518-580-5320 or mkoskine at skidmore.edu . Scholarship 
winners will be chosen by audition.  Up to four scholarships will be 
awarded.

Metro PCS Community Scholars – Open to graduating seniors who plan to 
enroll full time in a two or four year college, have exceptional 
involvement in volunteerism and community service and a minimum 
unweighted GPA of 3.0.  Financial need is not considered.  15 
scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded in the SF Bay Area.  
Applications available in D221 and at www.metropcs.com/scholarship   
Deadline: November 29.

Gates Millennium Scholarship – open to low income, high achieving 
African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific 
Islander American, and Hispanic American students who are a citizen, 
national or legal permanent resident of the US, have a minimum 
cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale and have demonstrated leadership 
abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular 
or other activities.  Scholarship covers all costs of a college 
education which are unmet through the financial aid package or other 
scholarships.  The scholarship also covers graduate school for selected 
majors.  Deadline:  December 31 if applying by mail, January 11 if 
applying online.  Applications are available in D221 and at 
www.gmsp.org .
