SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  MUNDANE – dull, boring, or everyday; earthly.  
When he ceased attending to the mundane tasks of bathing and shaving, 
Homer Simpson was fired from his job as spokesman for Chanel cosmetics.

AFTERSCHOOL JOBS – October 31 is the last day to submit applications 
for after school jobs through the City of Berkeley Youthworks Program.  
Pick up and submit applications at Youthworks, 1947 Center St.,

WORKSHOPS FOR FAMILIES
The Gooden Family Scholarship Fund is holding workshops as follows:
•	Sunday, October 28 – College 101 in Spanish, for 10th and 11th grade 
families, 1:00-3:00 pm at Iglesia Catolica de San Pablo, 1825 Church 
St., San Pablo
•	Sunday, November 4 – College 101 in English, for 10th and 11th grade 
families, Easter Hill United Methodist Church, 3911 Cutting Blvd., 
Richmond.

FOR SENIORS
Berkeley Experience Program - The Berkeley Experience Program welcomes 
high school seniors onto the UC Berkeley campus. Each student will be 
paired with a current Alumni Scholar in his/her potential area of 
study. This program allows high school seniors to get a taste of life 
at Berkeley, ask any questions they might have, attend a college 
application workshop, sit in on classes and speak with alumni and 
faculty.  This year's BEP dates:   November 14 and November 21, 8:00 
am-8:00 pm.  Cost: $25 including meals.  For more information and to

APPLY TO THE UC’S AND CAL STATES NOW! The UC application is now 
available online at http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/ . 
  You can start your application and work on it now.  The first day to 
submit your application is November 1. The Cal State application is 
available at www.csumentor.edu .  You can start the applications and 
save them as you go.  Sign up to attend the application workshops where 
you can get one-on-one help with both applications.  All workshops will 
be held in the BHS library.

COUNSELOR RECOMMENDATION FORMS – your counselor recommendation forms 
(Secondary School Report Forms), transcript request forms and envelopes 
are due one month prior to your earliest deadline, but no later than 
November 8.  If you have questions about the format of these forms or 
what is needed, please see one of us in the College/Career Center.

COLLEGE VISITS
Seniors, sign up in D221 to attend college presentations.  All 
presentations will be held in the College/Career Center.  You must also 
pick up an authorization form for your teacher to sign so that you may 
miss his or her class.  This is a great opportunity to find out more 
about what individual colleges have to offer as well as to meet the 
admission officer who may be reading your application.   Students may 
not attend more than 10 college visits during the school year.   A

ESSAY READERS AND WORKSHOPS
NEW ESSAY READER SCHEDULE - Essay readers will be available in the 
College/Career Center every day from 8:00 to 8:30, at lunch and after 
3:15.  They will also be available during 6th periods on Monday, 
Tuesday and Thursday.  No sign-ups are necessary; just bring your essay 
draft.

Essay writing workshops:
Morning workshops will be held in the College/Career Center.  Afternoon 
workshops in either Conference Room A or B.  Students must sign up to 
attend.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – Tuesday, October 30 is the regular registration 
deadline for the December 1 SAT and SAT subject tests.  Friday, 
November 2 is the late registration deadline for the December 8 ACT 
test. These are the last tests which the UC’s and some CSU campuses 
will accept.  Fee waivers for low income students are available in 
D221.

for both the SAT and the ACT.

COLLEGE INFORMATION SESSIONS IN THE BAY AREA
Thurs., October 25, 7:00 pm – Tulane University at Oakland Marriott 
City Center, 1001 Broadway, Oakland.  RSVP at 1-800-873-WAVE.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Metro PCS Community Scholars – Open to graduating seniors who plan to 
enroll full time in a two or four year college, have exceptional 
involvement in volunteerism and community service and a minimum 
unweighted GPA of 3.0.  Financial need is not considered.  15 
scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded in the SF Bay Area.

Gates Millennium Scholarship – open to low income, high achieving 
African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific 
Islander American, and Hispanic American students who are a citizen, 
national or legal permanent resident of the US, have a minimum 
cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale and have demonstrated leadership 
abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular 
or other activities.  Scholarship covers all costs of a college 
education which are unmet through the financial aid package or other 
scholarships.  The scholarship also covers graduate school for selected 
majors.  Deadline:  December 31 if applying by mail, January 11 if 
applying online.  Applications are available in D221 and at 
www.gmsp.org .
