STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN
October 3, 2007

Administration

1. Today, Wednesday, October 3, Berkeley High will be administering
the first of three sets of the California Exit Exam for this school
year.  Seniors who need to, may take the test three times this year,
juniors will take it twice, and the entire sophomore class will take
the test once in February.  Students who are taking the test in
October have already been notified.  In order to have the test run
smoothly, we need several volunteers.  Please contact Janet Huseby at

*2. Seniors and Parents will be receiving their graduation ordering
packages on Wednesday, October 3rd during their English class.
Acheivers will be here next week (October 10-12) to accept class ring,
cap and gown and other graduation product orders.  If you have

3. BSEP Meeting, Tuesday, October 9, 2007 4:30 - 6:00pm.  Agenda
Items: Members and alternates sign in; establish a quorum;
introductions; approval of minutes from last meeting; public comment;
approval of agenda-additions/changes; chair report; elect chairperson;
elect 4 reps to the BSEP Planning and Oversight committee; Elect 2
representatives to Shared Governance Committee; Plan for evaluation of
programs funded for Fiscal year 2007/8; Approve calendars of meeting
for the school year.

4. Attention sophomores and juniors- This year's PSAT will be
Saturday, October 20 at 8am.  Sign-ups will be October 1 through 10 at
lunch and after school to 4 pm at the D-building ticket windows on
Allston Way. The test fee is $22 cash or money order payable to
Berkeley High School.  This is an excellent practice for the SAT and
for Juniors the test to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship
programs.  Do NOT wait to sign up on the last days.  The line will be
LONG!

*5. Confidential Drug and Alcohol Therapy group starts, October 8.  A
good place to talk about your drug use and get support and advice for
making changes in your life.


RALLY INFORMATION

1. Rally dancers, all dance previews are scheduled for today, October
3rd in Naomi Washington's dance room from 3:30 -6pm.  Come by D148 if
you have any questions.

2. Spirit week is coming soon - October 22-26th! Support your class
with a t-shirt design or by joining the rally dance.  The Associated
Student Body, ASB, is currently taking ideas for spirit week!  Bring
them by D148 or come by for more information.

3. Homecoming Royalty!  Do you want to be Homecoming King/Queen,
Prince/Princess, Duke/Duchess or Count/Countess?  All grades come to
D148 for an application and more details.

4. Do you like to draw? The sophomore class of 2010 is looking for
t-shirt designs for our rally day shirt!  Have any ideas or drawings?
Submit them to Mrs. Jordan in D148 and represent your class of 2010.


Clubs

1. Earphone English- first meeting of the year is today at lunch in
room C116.  Come check out our great selection of audio books, say
goodbye to Francisca and meet the new librarian.

2. The first official Asian Pacific Islanders committee is coming up
this Thursday, October 4th!  Come to C333 during lunch to learn more
about APIC.  Hope to see you there.

3. The CAS Hip hop Social Justice Club invites poets to a poetry slam
in the school library on Thursday October 4th from 6-8 pm.

4. Anyone interested in the workings of our government?  Maybe see
Hilary or Obama in action.  Please come to an informational meting
about close-up this year in G201, Tuesday, Oct. 2nd at lunchtime.


Sports

1. Girls volleyball plays at Hercules. JV starts at 3:30pm; Varsity
follows JV.  Games will be held at Portola Middle School as El Cerrito
High is under construction.


Freshman Section

1. Class of 2011, BHS leadership is looking for you!  If you are
interested in making a difference, stop by D148 for more details.


Senior/Junior Section

1. Seniors!  Were you a cute baby?  Why not put it in the yearbook,
drop it off in room H102 with your name printed and your 2nd period
class on the back.

2. Seniors- Senior polls are now out! Pick up 1 sheet in H102 during
7th period.  See David Thompson for details.

*3. SENIORS-Sign up in the College/ Career Center to attend these
college visits.  You must get an authorization (Available in D221)
signed by the teacher whose class you will miss.

4. Ron Brown Scholarship Program - open to black or African American
seniors who have shown leadership, commitment to public service and a
desire to make a difference, have financial need and are a US citizen
or permanent resident. Scholarship is for $10,000 per year for four
years.  The deadline is November 1 to be eligible for other
scholarships through the Ron Brown program or January 9, 2008 for the
Ron Brown Scholarship only.  Applications available in D221.


Events/Performances

1. 1st Monthly Poetry Slam- Calling all poets, please come out and
represent.  Thursday, 6pm in the BHS library.  MC, poets,
storyteller's and open mic before the slam.

2. Come celebrate our freedom to read this week during Banned Book
Week!  Come to the library to see the display of titles that have been
challenged in school and public libraries.  Fill out a slip to guess
why someone objected to each of these books.


JOBS

1. Berkeley Public Library is hiring 8 student workers for our
community service internships.  These jobs involve assisting Teen
Service librarians in a variety of tasks and working with library
materials. Our emphasis this year is on community service.  Contact

2. Student workers needed- Work at Berkeley Natural Food Store.  For
more information, please contact 510-526-2456.

3. King Middle School After school ELL Tutorial is looking for Spanish
bilingual tutors who can work from 3-4, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday,
and from 2:15-3:15 on Wednesday.  We'll also hire monolingual English
speaking tutors who want to patiently work with middle school
students. You must be good in Pre-Algebra and Algebra and/or Science.
You must be in the 11th or 12th grade and able to get to King in time!
Pay-$9.00/hour.  Come by the Science Building, room 7 and ask for
Patricia Rathwell or Akemi Hamai, or call 644-4811.

4.  Albany Physical Therapy has an opening for a student to work 15-18
hours per week (approximately 3 hours per day, Monday-Friday).  The
student is responsible for filing, faxing, copying, laundry,
straightening up treatment rooms and other miscellaneous jobs.
Contact Sherry at 526-2353.  Wages: $8/hour.

5.  City of El Cerrito has immediate openings for jobs working with
all ages of children in a variety of recreation settings.  Students
must be at least 16 years old.  Flexible scheduling around school
schedules.  Pay $10.25 - $14.86 per hour depending on experience.
Apply at the El Cerrito Community Center, 7007 Moeser Lane, El

6. Looking for someone to do yard work.  Starting at $10 /hour.  2-5
