College Advisor's Bulletin
Monday, June 4, 2007

SAT WORD OF THE DAY: REMONSTRATE – to protest; object. Julie
remonstrated strongly when her parents said that she was grounded for a
month because she was one minute late getting home from the party.

*I will be away from school from Wednesday-Friday this week at a
professional conference. If you have questions or concerns, please
contact me today or tomorrow, or next week. Mr. Saraceno and Ms. Harris
will be here while I am gone and can answer your questions.

JOBS/VOLUNTEER
California Youth Energy Services – Summer job to educate adults about
ways to conserve energy and water. No soliciting involved. Begins
June 25 for 7 weeks. Applications available in D221. For more
information, call CYES at 510-665-1501 x12 or e-mail
adly at risingsunenergy.org or www.risingsunenergy.org. Applicants must
be at least 18 years old and have access to a vehicle.

VOLUNTEER - Lisa Clark is looking for a volunteer to help her with
internet research. Students can volunteer. Lisa has a masters in
history and is willing to trade internet research for tutoring in
writing and college prep advice. Time commitment: 4-5 hours per week.
  510-205-7671.

STERN GROVE FESTIVAL is looking for volunteers to usher, staff the
information booth, collect donations and help with the children’s
program. The festival is every Sunday from June 17 to August 19 and
features a wide array of free performances, from Opera and Ballet to
Latin, R&B and Jazz, not to mention music from Israel, Brazil, and
South Africa.  Volunteers enjoy reserve seating and free beverages and
snacks. This is a great opportunity to learn about career paths in the
arts. The full season schedule and the volunteer registration form are
now available at www.sterngrove.org. Email volunteer at sterngrove.org
with any questions, or call 415.252.6253.

FOR SENIORS
UC campuses strongly recommend that admitted students attend
ORIENTATION 2007 a campus orientation session, where you will find the
answers to many questions about what life will be like at the
University. The schedule provides orientation dates, fees, campus
contact information and more.
http://www.ucop.edu/pathways/ucnotes/May07/orientation.html

CSF Sealbearers – The tassels and cords for you to wear at graduation
have arrived. Pick yours up from Ms. Harris in the College/Career
Center.

SENIOR EXIT REPORT – If you have not turned in the Senior Exit Report
to D221 or your teacher, you must do so immediately, or you will not be
able to pick up your graduation tickets. Come to the College/Career
Center to fill out a form TODAY! It only takes a few minutes.

*FINAL TRANSCRIPT REQUEST FORMS – These were due on June 1. If you
have not turned this form in to Ms. Mellion in D173, YOU MUST DO SO
IMMEDIATELY so that we can send your final official transcript to the
school you will be attending in the fall. Write “FINAL TRANSCRIPT” in
capital letters across the top of the form and paperclip it to a
stamped business size envelope addressed to the college, with Berkeley
High School (1980 Allston Way, Berkeley 94704) as the return address.
If you are under 18, please remember to have your parent or guardian
sign the request form. All colleges require that students send them a
final transcript confirming their senior year grades. Failure to do so
could result in the college you plan to attend rescinding your
admission.

If you are getting below a C in any of your classes and are planning to
attend a four year college in the fall, you MUST contact the college to
discuss this. All colleges will receive a copy of your final
transcript. By contacting the college and discussing your options with
them, you may be able to prevent your admission from being rescinded.
Please see me or Mr. Saraceno if you would like to discuss your grades
or what to say to the college.

FOR JUNIORS
The Junior Summer To Do List and the Senior Profile are now available
in the College/Career Center. Students are required to fill out the
Senior Profile if they are applying to any private schools or
scholarships which require a counselor recommendation or School Report.
I strongly recommend that students complete the profile during the
summer, as the fall semester is extremely busy. There is also a
section of the Senior Profile which parents/guardians must complete.

Thinking of applying to a UC campus? The new Introducing the
University is now available in the College/Career Center. This
information packed-booklet is a great resource on each UC campus,
including majors and admissions, as well as the UC system as a whole.
Don’t forget to pick yours up!

FOR ALL GRADES
SWIFT, a nonprofit cultural exchange organization in Oakland, is
looking for families to host exchange students (aged 14-18) from Spain,
France and China for 2-4 weeks this summer.  Host families can learn
about another culture and practice foreign language skills while
sharing US traditions.  For more info, please contact Miya at (510)
525-5633 or mrsioson at yahoo.com.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Canon Jones Memorial Scholarship – students must have been in either
the Berkeley Boosters/Police Activities League, CAS at Berkeley High or
a member of the Southside Church of Christ in Richmond and accepted at
a four year college or university. Two scholarships of $1,000 each
will be awarded and are renewable. Recommendations and essays
required. Applications available in D221. Deadline: June 22.
