The Berkeley High Student Court is looking for volunteer advocates for
next year! Students can become advocates to argue real discipline cases
before a jury of BHS students. Advocates will present statements on behalf
of the student offender (or Respondent, since they are responding to their
actions) or on behalf of the community at large (teachers, victims, etc.).
A UC Berkeley Boalt Hall law student will teach the volunteer advocates
how to construct arguments, write statements, present properly, act as
forepeople for juries, etc. The classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays at
7th period, and we are flexible when it comes to accommodations for
sports, academic obligations, and other activities. Trials for the
Student Court take place about four times a month at 5:30 -7:30 in the
BUSD Administrative Buliding.
The Berkeley High Student Court Program is a great way to get involved in
the community and strengthen applications for college. 10th and 11th
graders can fulfill internship and community service hours next year by
participating either as a juror or as an advocate. 5 credits are offered
per semester of service. Not only is participation in the BHSC great for
developing skills that will last a lifetime, it's fun. Anyone that's
thinking about becoming a lawyer or helping his or her fellow students
should apply.
