SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  PRECLUDE – to prevent.  The approaching hurricane  
precluded the possibility of holding our Labor Day barbecue and beach  
party.

FOR SENIORS
If you would like to discuss your options for next year or need help  
understanding and comparing your financial aid packages, please stop by  
to see me or Mr. Saraceno any day at lunch or after school.

MAY 1 DEADLINE – May 1 is the deadline to send in your Statement of  
Intent to Register (SIR) to most colleges and universities.  For most  
schools, if you do not send in your SIR and your deposit (if required)  
by May 1, you will not be able to attend that school in the fall.  You  
may only send in a SIR to one school.  It is unethical to tell more  
than one school that you plan to attend their college in the fall.  If  
you have any questions at all, please stop by to see me or Mr. Saraceno  
at lunch or after school.

If you were waitlisted at a school that you wish to attend, you very  
likely will not hear whether you have been admitted from the waitlist  
before May 1.  Therefore, you must send a Statement of Intent to  
Register (SIR) to one of the schools where you have been admitted no  
later than May 1.  If you are then admitted to the school where you  
were waitlisted, you can tell the school where you sent the SIR that  
you have been admitted off the waitlist of your first choice school and  
tell the school where you were originally waitlisted that you will be  
attending there in the fall.

The following Cal State campuses are still accepting applications:  Cal  
Maritime, Bakersfield, Chico, Dominguez Hills, East Bay, Fullerton  
(computer science and engineering only), Los Angeles, Monterey Bay,  
Northridge, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Stanislaus, Humboldt (will  
close on May 31), San Jose, and Sonoma (except interdisciplinary  
studies, liberal studies and pre-nursing majors).

UC Riverside and UC Merced are still accepting applications for Fall  
2007.  To apply, download an application at

FOR JUNIORS
Students who have not yet signed up for an appointment with their  
College Advisor may sign up now.  The appointment sign-up sheets will  
continue to be available for the rest of the semester.  However, the  
sooner you sign up, the sooner you will have your meeting.  Don’t  
delay!

People's Test Preparation Service is holding free preparation workshops  
for the SAT subject tests.  The last one is:  Math 2 on April 22.  All  
workshops will be held at 235 Dwinelle Hall on the UC Berkeley campus

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – TODAY - April 17 is the late registration deadline  
for the May 5 SAT test.  Register at www.collegeboard.com. May 4 is the  
regular registration deadline for the June 9 ACT test.  Register at  
www.act.org.

Latino Business Student Association Essay Contest.  Open to juniors and  
seniors in Albany, Berkeley, Fremont or Oakland High School who plan to  
attend a two or four year college in the fall with a minimum GPA of 2.8  
who is from a Hispanic, African-American, Native American or Pacific  
Islander background.  Senior grand prize - $500; junior price - $200  
worth of prizes.  Deadline:  April 19.

FOR ALL GRADES
April 28, 1:00-4:30 pm – St. Mary’s College Fair.  This is the biggest  
college fair in the East Bay.  Representatives from over 150 different  
colleges and universities will be available to speak with you. In  
addition, come to free workshops on admissions, financial aid, the UC,  
Cal State and community college systems, recruited athletes and  
Historically Black Colleges and Universities.  Sessions will also be  
held in Spanish.  For more information, go to

*Take the bus from Berkeley High to the St. Mary’s College Fair!   
Purchase a $2 ticket from Ms. Harris in D221.  The bus will leave at  
12:30 and return you by 4:00 pm.  You can also take BART to the Orinda  
BART station and take the free shuttle to St. Mary’s College from  
there.

Paid Internship Opportunities – Metropolitan Transportation Commission  
High School Summer Internship Program.  Applicants must be at least 16  
years old with at least a 2.8 GPA (if below 2.8, must submit two  
letters of recommendation).  Application and lists of job sites are  
available at www.mtc.ca.gov .  Applications are also available in D221.  
You may also contact the MTC High School Coordinator at 817-5807.

Summer Day Camp Jobs – Counselor in Training (completed grade 9, 10 or  
11, a volunteer position) and Junior Counselor (completed grade 10, 11  
or 12, may receive a weekly stipend).  Work with campers ages 5-14.   
Students can work for 4, 6 or 8 weeks from June 18-August 24,  
Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm.  Apply online at the UC Berkeley Department of

Aspire Education Project offers SAT and ACT practice tests at Piedmont  
High School, Room 39 at 9:00 am.  These are generally held one week  
before the actual test.  Test dates are on Saturdays: May 26 and June 2  
and Sunday, April 29 and students may take either test on each day.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Northern California Scholarship – Open  
to U.S. citizens with a Japanese ancestry or legal Japanese residents  
of the U.S. who have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.30 who have  
demonstrated academic interests in the study of fields of US-Japanese  
relationship and plan to attend an accredited college or university in  
the fall.  Two scholarships of $2,000 each will be awarded.  Received  
deadline:  June 8.

Scates Scholarship – open to African American male seniors with a  
minimum GPA of 3.5 and a minimum 1500 SAT score with a commitment to  
the community who will be entering a four year college in the fall.   
Several scholarships of varying amounts will be awarded.  Received  
deadline:  April 27.  Applications available in D221.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Oakland East Bay Alumnae Chapter – Open to  
African American seniors with a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.0 or  
higher who have demonstrated community service, leadership ability and  
have financial need who are planning to attend a four year college or  
university.  $1,000 scholarship each.  Deadline:  April 28.   
Applications available in D221.

Chinese American Citizens Alliance – Open to Chinese American seniors  
who are available to attend the awards dinner on June 24.  Students  
must fill out an application and write an essay.  Applications  
available in D221.  Deadline:  April 20.   At least 9 scholarships will  
be awarded.

Richard D. Navies Scholarship – Open to graduating seniors who are U.S.  
citizens or legal residents who are a varsity athlete this year, has a  
minimum GPA of 2.5 and minimum ACT score of 20 or SAT score of 900 who  
demonstrate leadership and commitment to service and have good  
sportsmanship and a positive attitude.  Two scholarships of $2,500  
each.  Deadline:  May 1.  Applications available in D221.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarship – Open to African and African American  
seniors with a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5 who are planning to attend  
college immediately after graduation. Scholarship value up to $1,000.   
Deadline:  April 30.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS
Public Glass, San Francisco’s center for creation and education in the  
glass arts, is offering summer workshops for students ages 14-18.  Each  
workshop is one week long and meets Monday-Friday, 9:00 am-3:00 pm and  
costs $700.  Beginning workshop – June 18-22; Intermediate – July 9-13  
and Advanced – July 23-27.  For more information, go to

Part-time and summer internship opportunity available at Elmhurst  
Pharmacy, an independently owned pharmacy that has been serving the Bay  
Area for over 50 years.  This is a great opportunity for students who  
are interested in marketing, business development or healthcare.   
Students will have the opportunity to design marketing brochures and  
flyers, train patients on using the web service and develop a marketing

programs based in colleges around the country while others volunteer  
and language immersion programs around the world.  Many offer
