SAT WORD OF THE DAY:   ESOTERIC – understood only by a select few; 
arcane.  Very few people are experts in the esoteric science of 
advanced water balloon launching.

IMPORTANT NOTE – I will be away from school the week of March 26.  If

FOR ALL GRADES
*Summer Day Camp Jobs – Counselor in Training (completed grade 9, 10 or 
11, a volunteer position) and Junior Counselor (completed grade 10, 11 
or 12, may receive a weekly stipend).  Work with campers ages 5-14.  
Students can work for 4, 6 or 8 weeks from June 18-August 24, 
Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm.  Apply online at the UC Berkeley Department of 
Recreational Sports, www.oski.org or call 643-2477.

Aspire Education Project offers SAT and ACT practice tests at Piedmont 
High School, Room 39 at 9:00 am.  These are generally held one week 
before the actual test.  Test dates are on Saturdays: March 24, April 
7, May 26, and June 2 and Sunday, April 29 and students may take either 
test on each day.  For more information, go to www.aspireeducation.org 
or call (510) 658-7500.  Cost is $20 payable at the time of the test.

Saturday, March 24, 12-3 pm, Albany High School - Dynamy will be 
hosting a FREE fair for students to learn about a variety of gap year 
programs available to young adults, ages 17-22. A gap year is an 
interim experience before college; it can include travel, language 
immersion, work experience, community service and more. Representatives 
from the following organizations will be present: Outward Bound, 
GlobalQuest, The Woolman Semester, Amigos, Bridgton Academy, The 
Council on International Education Cultural Exchange, Leap Now, 
Sojourns Abroad, Youth for Understanding, Dynamy, The Student 
Conservation Association, Projects Abroad, Thames Academy, and Where 
There Be Dragons.  For more information, contact Carolie Sly at

Building Diversity in Science is sponsoring the Scientific Empowerment 
Movement.  This free event will bring together minority scientists, 
physicians, professionals and entertainers to empower youth and young 
adults and promote diversity in the sciences.  April 14 at the Mission 
Bay Campus of UC San Francisco.  Breakfast and lunch is included.

FOR JUNIORS
Monday, March 26, 8:30 am in the College/Career Center- Harvard College 
– A Harvard student from the Office of Undergraduate Minority 
Recruitment will meet with juniors interested in more information on 
Harvard.  Sign up in D221.

People's Test Preparation Service workshop on Personal Statements 
(application essays) will be held on Saturday, April 7 from 3-4:30 pm 
at 235 Dwinelle Hall on the UC Berkeley campus.  For more information,

FOR SENIORS
SAT/ACT TEST DATES – April 3 is the regular registration deadline for 
the May 5 SAT test.  Register at www.collegeboard.com. May 4 is the 
regular registration deadline for the June 9 ACT test.  Register at 
www.act.org.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Oakland East Bay Alumnae Chapter – Open to 
African American seniors with a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.0 or 
higher who have demonstrated community service, leadership ability and 
have financial need who are planning to attend a four year college or 
university.  $1,000 scholarship each.  Deadline:  April 28.  
Applications available in D221.

Chinese American Citizens Alliance – Open to Chinese American seniors 
who are available to attend the awards dinner on June 24.  Students 
must fill out an application and write an essay.  Applications 
available in D221.  Deadline:  April 20.   At least 9 scholarships will 
be awarded.

Kim and Harold Louise Family Foundation – Open to seniors with minimum 
unweighted GPA of 3.5, a minimum SAT score of 1900 who is planning to 
attend a US college or university or vocational program next year.  
Students with financial need or who have parents who did not attend 
college or who have overcome adversity or are first-generation 
immigrants will be given special consideration.  $50,000 will be 
distributed among the awardees.  Deadline:  April 7.  Applications 
available in D221.

Richard D. Navies Scholarship – Open to graduating seniors who are U.S. 
citizens or legal residents who are a varsity athlete this year, has a 
minimum GPA of 2.5 and minimum ACT score of 20 or SAT score of 900 who 
demonstrate leadership and commitment to service and have good 
sportsmanship and a positive attitude.  Two scholarships of $2,500 
each.  Deadline:  May 1.  Applications available in D221.

Aztec Scholarship Program – Applicant must be a Latino or Latina 
Oakland resident graduating from high school and entering a four year 
university, community college, art institute or vocational school for 
the 2007-2008 school year.  Most are based on scholastic achievement 
and financial need.  Ten scholarships will be awarded.  Nine are in the 
amount of $1,000 and one is for $2,000 per year for four years.  
Deadline:  April 6.  Applications available in D221.

Meleia Willis-Starbuck Memorial Scholarship for Social Justice – open 
to graduating senior who plans to attend a two or four year university 
in the fall who has participated in work to further the cause of social 
justice in high school and plans to continue that work in college and 
beyond, has financial need and a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Deadline:  April 
11.  Applications available in D221.  Minimum value of $1,000.

New American College Fund Educators for Fair Consideration – students 
must be born outside of the U.S., have financial need, have lived in 
California for 3 or more years of their high school career, have a 
minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 and plan to attend a two or four year 
college in the fall.  Scholarship: $2,000.  Deadline:  March 30.  
Applications available in D221.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarship – Open to African and African American 
seniors with a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5 who are planning to attend 
college immediately after graduation. Scholarship value up to $1,000.  
Deadline:  April 30.

Rotary Club of Berkeley – open to seniors with financial need who would 
otherwise have difficulty paying to attend a four year college.  Also 
taken into consideration are academic standing, test scores, 
extracurricular activities.  Applicants cannot be relatives of a living 
Rotarian.  Scholarships of $5,000 per year, renewable for four years.  
Deadline: April 11

Berkeley Retired Teachers Association Scholarship – Open to Berkeley 
High seniors who have spent the majority of their school age years in 
Berkeley Unified School District.  Scholarship amounts vary.  Deadline: 
  March 30.  Applications available in D221.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS
We have applications for numerous summer programs.  Some are academic 
programs based in colleges around the country while others volunteer 
and language immersion programs around the world.  Many offer 
scholarship programs for low income students.  Check them out in our 
summer box in the College/Career Center!
