SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  ANGUISH - deep emotional pain.  The damage done
by war continues well beyond the fighting: the deep emotional anguish
of traumatized survivors can last for decades. 

JUNIOR PARENTS - If you missed the Junior Parent College meeting on
Tuesday, February 6, you may borrow the DVD of the meeting for up to
two nights.  Please e-mail me, including your name, student name and
phone number, and I will let you know when the DVD is available.

ATHLETES IN 10TH AND 11TH GRADE - On Monday, February 26th at 3:30 in
the Little Theatre a presenter will discuss the NCAA Clearinghouse
requirements as well as the ins and outs of the college recruitment
process .  All 10th and 11th graders who are interested in being
recruited as a college athlete should come to this presentation.
Parents are also invited.

FOR ALL STUDENTS
African American Education Summit - Saturday, February 24, Cal State
East Bay, University Union.  Registration begins at 8:00 am, workshop
session from 9:00 to 3:00.  Special guest is Sara Sidner from KTVU
Channel 2.  College admissions and financial aid and scholarship

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory provides talented high school
students from the San Francisco Bay Area with paid summer internships
in science, engineering, technology, computing sciences, and related
areas. In 2006, over 241 students applied and 48 were selected.
Selection is based on the applicant's grades, especially in science
and mathematics courses, and demonstrated commitment to a future
career in the sciences, engineering, computer sciences, or related
field. One teacher recommendation is requested and is an important
factor. High school student interns work 40 hours a week for six weeks
from June 27th through August 10th and receive a stipend. They will
also have the opportunity to create a resume, attend lectures and
seminars and participate in a variety of workshops.   For more

FOR SENIORS
The Young Conservatory at American Conservatory Theater is offering a
special scholarship for high school seniors in Alameda County to
attend classes offered in the Spring Session (March 19-May 26, after
school and weekend schedule) and their 4-week Summer 2007 Session
(daytime classes June 18-July 13).  The spring class schedule and
scholarship application is available in D221.  The scholarship,
offered on a first come, first serve basis is for one class in either
the 2007 Spring Session or the 4-Week Summer session.  Students
applying must meet regular standards of admission and must be able to
commit to the full course selected. 

City College of San Francisco is now accepting applications for their
Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Program.  This is an
excellent two-year program in which students earn an  Associate of
Science Degree and an Award of Achievement in Culinary Arts, Food
Service Management or Hotel Management.  Graduates of this program
have transferred to many different four year colleges to earn a a
bachelor's degree.  Additional information is available in the

FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOPS - We will be holding workshops on filling out
the FAFSA both before and after school. All workshops will be held in
the BHS library.  Please sign up in D221 so that we make sure that we
have enough computers for everyone.  Bring with you completed 2006 tax
returns and/or information on  income for you and your parents from
any source for 2006 as well as information on assets for you and your
parents.  This information will not be shared with anyone. In order to
best prepare for the workshop, pick up a FAFSA on the Web Worksheet in
D221 prior to the workshop.  Then you can fill out the requested
information and know what your questions are.  The dates for the
workshops are:

CAL GRANTS - Cal Grants are free money from the state of California
based on the student's GPA and family income. The money may be used at
any accredited California college, public or private. Applying for the
Cal Grant is very easy - just fill out and submit the FAFSA by March 2
listing a California college to receive the information and fill out
the Cal Grant Information Release Form, available in D173 and D221.
This is a very simple form which takes less than 5 minutes to
complete.  TURN YOUR FORM IN NOW SO THAT WE WILL HAVE TIME TO SEND
YOUR GPA BEFORE THE DEADLINE. 

CAL STATE APPLICATIONS - many Cal State campuses are still accepting
applications.  They are:  Cal Maritime, Bakersfield, Channel Islands,
Chico, Dominguez Hills (deadline is April 1), East Bay, Fullerton
(open only to Computer Science and Engineering majors), Humboldt
(tentative deadline is June 1), Los Angeles, Monterey Bay, Northridge,
Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Jose (deadline is March 1), San
Marcos, Sonoma (deadline February 28) and Stanislaus.  If you need
help with your applications, see Ms. Abrams or Mr. Saraceno in D221.  

SAT/ACT TEST DATES -  March 9 is the regular registration deadline for
the April 14 ACT test.  Register at www.act.org.  April 3 is the
regular registration deadline for the May 5 SAT test.  Register at
www.collegeboard.com. 

SCHOLARSHIPS
Wa Sung Community Service Club Merit Scholarship - applicants must be
graduating senior of Asian descent residing in Alameda or Contra Costa
County who will be attending college in fall 2007.  Seven to ten
scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded.  

Rotary Club of Berkeley - open to seniors with financial need who
would otherwise have difficulty paying to attend a four year college.
Also taken into consideration are academic standing, test scores,
extracurricular activities.  Applicants cannot be relatives of a
living Rotarian.  Scholarships of $5,000 per year, renewable for four
years.  

Robert T. Nahas Scholarship Award - Requirements: Graduating senior
from an Alameda County public or private high school; a record of
community service for at least two years; minimum GPA of 3.0; competed
in a competitive sports program for at least two years; U.S. citizen,
native born; proof of admission to a four year accredited college.
Deadline:  April 30.  Two male and two female awardees will each
receive $2,500 per year for a total of $10,000.  Applications
available in D221.  

George P. Scotlan Scholarship Award - Requirements: Graduating senior
from an Alameda County public or private high school; a record of
community service for at least two years; minimum GPA of 3.0; have
financial need; U.S. citizen, native born; proof of admission to a
four year accredited college.  Deadline:  April 30.  Three awardees
will each receive $2,500 per year for a total of $10,000.
Applications available in D221.  

Berkeley Retired Teachers Association Scholarship - Open to Berkeley
High seniors who have spent the majority of their school age years in
Berkeley Unified School District.  Scholarship amounts vary.
Deadline:  March 30.  Applications available in D221.  

Berkeley Community Fund Scholarship - open to Berkeley High seniors
who will be attending a two or four year college in the fall with a
minimum GPA of 2.5.  Scholarships range from $500-$4,000.  Deadline:
March 12.  

Kiwanis Club Scholarship - Open to graduating seniors.  One
scholarship is for students who are planning to attend a four year
college.  The other is for students who are planning an alternative or
trade school path.  Essay and recommendations are required.  Deadline:
March 29.  A total of $40,000 will be awarded.  Applications available
in D221.  

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS
Below are a few of the summer opportunities available.  Check out the
"Summer" box in the College/Career Center to read about many more.  

Americans for Informed Democracy offers a two-week summer enrichment
program for rising juniors and seniors in high school interested in
international relations. Called Global Scholar, the program is held at
Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia from July 1-14,
2007. Global Scholar is a college prep and leadership development
program that builds global competence.  Students hear from global
leaders and delve into a World Affairs curriculum modeled on a college
level course.  They will also have the chance to videoconference with
their peers halfway around the world, visit leading global
institutions, journey to foreign countries through film, and devise
global campaigns to respond to today's most pressing global
challenges. Cost: $1,600. Several full and half scholarships are

Yosemite Institute - 9-14 day trips during the months of July and
August. Trips include backpacking, whitewater rafting, wilderness
leadership, rock climbing, scientific field research, and backcountry
skills, such as route finding, map and compass use, outdoor
leadership, cooking, and leave-no-trace principles. Cost: $1,175-1,550
