STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN
February 8, 2007

Administration

1. Attention students and staff:  Please check for lost items in the
Parent Center room D224 at lunchtime on Friday for any item you might
have lost.  Because of health reasons all sneakers and caps will be
discarded as well as soiled clothing.

2. ID Cards are $5 pictures will be taken on Monday, Wednesday and
Thursday lunchtime or after school 3:15- 3:45 pm .  All BHS students
need an ID Card.  We will only print copies for special circumstances.


Clubs

1. Attention CSF Participants:  Applications and Community service
logs for the Spring semester are now available in the SLC, D221.
Completed applications and $1 membership dues are due on Tuesday,
February 20th.  3 hours of community service and $15 of fundraising
are due on June 6th. Cash only please.  If you have any questions,
contact CSF President Natalie Gaber at nataliegaber at comcast.net

2. Condom club!  Brought to you by PASSHEN: Peers advocating safety
and sexual Health education now!  Come learn the facts about HIV,
STDs, and how to be safe Wednesday, February 7th during lunch in H114.
You must attend the entire time to get a condom club sticker on your
ID.  Bring your lunch and your ID, and don't be late.

3. Come to French Club every Friday at lunch in Room C102.  Everyone
is welcome to come and have a great time at French Club!  Once again,
French Club is held every Friday at lunch in room C102!  Don't forget
to come!

4. A wise man once said "...The foundation of every state is the
education of its youth."  How is it that education has in impact on
the state?  What purposes does education serve in our society?  What
is the history of the educational system?  How what has was learned in
the past created the world that we live in today?  If you want the
answers to these questions, or want to learn more about the
philosophy, sociology, psychology, and economics of education today,
ENROLL IN ED: 97.  Go to 112 after school to find out more.


Sports

1. Attention all football athletes:  Meet Coach Carter in the weight
room on Thursday at 3:30 pm.

2. The girls soccer team defeated Hercules 5-2 last night and clinched
their 7th straight ACCAL league title.  Congratulations to the entire
girls soccer team.  They will compete in the NCS tournament next week.
Time  and location to be announced.

2. Berkeley will be hosting the Bay Bridge Classic wrestling
tournament this Saturday, February 10th in the Donahue Gym.
Competition begins at 9:30 am. Everyone is welcome to come watch and
support the Berkeley Wrestling Team.  If you are interested in
learning more about wrestling or volunteering at the Tournament please
see Kristin Glenchur.

3. Congratulations to the following wrestlers for placing at the 12th
Annual Oakland Winter Classic Wrestling Tournament last Saturday:
Senior Paul Navo placed 1st at 130 pounds; Senior Mirko Jurcan placed
4th at 125 pounds;  Sophomore Koji Jagust placed 6th at 130 pounds.


Senior / Junior Section

*1. Seniors- if you applied to San Jose State and haven't done so
already, you must turn in a Transcript Request Form to Ms. Mellion in
D173, along with a stamped envelope addressed to San Jose State, so
that she can send your first semester grades to the school.  They have
just initiated this requirement.

2. Scholarship for Juniors- Nordstrom Scholarship applications are
available in D221.  The scholarship is open to Juniors with an
unweighted GPA of at least 2.7 and who have financial need to go to
college.  The student must attend an accredited college-level
institution for four years.  The scholarship is for $10,000 and will
be paid over four years in installments of $2,500.  Deadline: May 31.

*3. Scholarships- Gill Scholarship- Open to graduating seniors with
financial need who are planning to major in business, computer
science, engineering, health science, math or the natural sciences.
$1,000 scholarship renewable for four years of college.  Deadline:
March 20. 
Applications available in D221.

4. Seniors: Financial Aid Workshops - please sign up in D221 to
attend.  Then you can fill out the requested information and know what
your questions are.  The dates for the workshops are:
Thursday, February 8, 7:30 am
Tuesday, February 20, 3:30 pm
Wednesday, February 21, 7:30 pm
Monday, February 26, 3:30 pm
Tuesday, February 27, 7:30 am
Wednesday, February 28, 3:30 pm

5. Tuesday, February 13- Cash for College workshop will held at 6:30
pm in the BHS Library.  A workshop will be held at 6:30 pm in the BHS
Library.  At the workshop, held in both English and Spanish, you will
be able to get help filling out the FAFSA.  One participant in the
workshop who completes the FAFSA and the Cal Grant form by March 2
will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.  For additional cash for College
workshops at other locations and dates go to www.calgrants.org and
click on the "Workshops" tab.

6. Alpha Kappa Alpha- Open to African and African American seniors
with a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5 who have recent community
involvement and plans to attend a two or four year college immediately
after graduation. Applications available in D221.  $1,000 scholarship.
Deadline: April 30.

7. College visits to Berkeley High- Seniors: Sign up in D221 to attend
college presentations. You must also pick up an authorization form for
your teacher to sign so that you may miss his or her class.
College visits:
Expression Center for New Media - this is an excellent college if you
are interested in sound arts, animation and visual effects, motion and
graphic design or game art and design.  Presentation on Tuesday,
February 13 at 10:35 (3rd period) in D221.  Sign up to attend.


Events/ Performance

*1. Do you know how much trash is produced each day at BHS?  How Much
of that trash could be recycled?  How much does BHS pay for trash?
Come find out the answers to these questions and more at the garbage
pile Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

2. Celebrate Black History Month by learning more about American
History.  Who was the first African American Supreme Court justice?
Come to the library to find the answer and then fill out an answer
sheet.  Students who get all weekly questions right will get a prize
at the end of the month.


Sales

1. If your club wants a page in the yearbook, come to H102 during 7th
period to claim your page.  Quarter, half, and full pages are being
sold.  Please come as soon as possible.  They're going fast!

2. Prices are $80.00 for yearbooks. Please purchase your yearbooks in
H102 each day. Financial Assistance is also available to those who
qualify see Mr. Knight during 7th in H102 to apply.
