STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN

Administration
*1. Exit Exam- We will administer the California High School Exit
Exam (CAHSEE) on Tuesday, February 6th and Wednesday, February 7th to
all tenth graders. They must take this two-day test in order to
graduate from high school in California. Students must arrive in the
Old Gym on Milvia street each morning at 7:30 am. There will be
signs telling them where to go and several volunteers to help assist
them. The food court will stay open an hour longer so that students
may eat lunch.
The make up test will take place on March 21 and March 22. See Amy
Frey for questions.
*2. Attention students and staff: Please check for lost items in the
Parent Center room D224 at lunchtime on Friday for any item you might
have lost. Because of health reasons all sneakers and caps will be
discarded as well as soiled clothing.
3. Students! Get a free email account! Come to the library before
or after school or during lunchtime and talk to Mr. Brodie or Ms.
Goldstein-Ericksen, library media teachers. You can use your email
to save schoolwork and send it to teachers. Avoid printing problems
by communicating electronically!
4. Those students who have signed the list for duplicate ID cards
please see Ms. Cooks in counseling at lunch time. All students who
still need a 2006-2007 BHS Student ID need to follow these procedures:
- All ID's will be taken on Wednesdays and Thursdays at lunchtime or
after school.
- For a New ID there is no fee.
- Report to the Photography Station in the counseling Center
Wednesdays and Thursdays at lunchtime or after school.
- Replacement ID's are $5.00 for each replacement.
5. BHS cordially invites you to the Berkeley High School Art Gallery,
Thursday February 1, 2007. Main entrance of BHS "C" Building from
7:00 - 8:30 pm.
6. Attention BHS young ladies: "Project Butterfly" is a new girls
group coming to Berkeley High on February 5, at lunchtime in room
D224. Project Butterfly is for girls interested in personal
development, developing leadership skills, school support and will
aid in the areas of character building and increased self-esteem.
Group size is limited so apply on February 5th in room D224.
Clubs
*1. All Best Buddies don't forget we're having a Bake Sale this
Saturday on 4th Street. If you can't come please drop off your baked
goods in H105 this week, thanks!
2. Are you at least 15 years old and a sophomore? Do you enjoy
working with kids? Are you interested in working towards positive
change with issues concerning diversity and cross-cultural education
among our youth? If yes, the Mosaic Project would love you to apply
as a volunteer Cabin leader for our upcoming spring and fall sessions
in Napa, California. This is a great opportunity to build leadership
skills and get community service hours! For more information or an

3. Are you interested in traveling to Nicaragua for free this summer?
Come to Building with Books on Tuesdays during lunch in the West
Gallery. The West Gallery is located up the ramp on the left of the
Community Theater towards the H building. Pick up an application
ASAP! This opportunity is available for freshman, sophomores and
juniors only.
4. Youth Together will be having their first meeting of the new
semester this Thursday. We will be discussing our events for the
semester. Come to A205, this Thursday at 3:30 pm to learn how you
can get involved.
Sports
1. Attention all Fall Athletes: If you have not turned in your
uniform or equipment from last season, you must turn it in to the
athletic office this week. If you do not turn it in by Friday, you
risk receiving an F for athletics, not receiving your diploma, and/or
not being eligible for future seasons of sport.
2. The wrestling team will be competing in the last league meet of
the season at home this Thursday February 1 at 6 pm in the Social
Hall. Come out and cheer Seniors Mirko Jurcan, Paul Navo, James
Clomon, and Aubrey Moody in their last league match for Berkeley High.
*3. BERKELEY HIGH SPRING SPORTS INFORMATION:
TRYOUTS BEGIN MONDAY, FEB. 5, 2007
A complete athletic packet must be turned in to the coach on the
first day of tryouts before you can participate. If you have tried
out for a fall or winter sport, your packet should be on file in the
athletic office. See the AD prior to tryouts and indicate that you
have a packet on file, and she will provide verification to hand to
your coach. If you have questions, contact Kristin Glenchur,

Varsity, JV, Freshman Baseball. Co-Head Coaches: Tim Moellering,
on-campus coach 7th year, Curtis Sandeford, off-campus coach 4th
year. Tryouts begin Monday through Friday at San Pablo Park -
3:45-7. Freshman practice begins Mon-Fri. 6-8 pm at Willard. Wear
workout attire (including sweatshirt), bring your own glove and

V and JV Softball. Head Coach: Ron Hunt, off-campus coach 2nd yr.
Tryouts begin, rain or shine, Monday through Friday at the BHS
softball field from 3:45-6:00. Wear workout attire (including

Varsity Badminton: Britta Fjelstrom, off-campus coach, 1st year.
Tryouts Monday, Wed, Thurs through in the Jacket Gym from
6:30-8:00pm, Tuesday and Friday 4-6. Wear workout attire, tennis
shoes, bring your own racquet. Limited number of beginner racquets

V. Boys Volleyball: Chris Paik, off-campus coach 2nd year. Tryouts
begin Monday through Friday in the Old Gym from 6:00-8:00. Wear

V and JV Boys Lacrosse: Mike Costanzo, off-campus coach 4th year.
Voluntary Conditioning takes place Monday-Friday prior to the start
of the season at 4:00 on the track. Tryouts begin Monday through
Wednesday at Grove Park 4:30-7:00. Thursday and Friday to be
determined. Wear workout attire (including sweatshirt), bring your

Tryouts begin 4-7 on Monday-Wednesday, Lower Martin Luther King
Middle School (on Hopkins). Thursday and Friday location to be
announced. Beginners welcome! Wear workout attire (including
sweatshirt), bring cleats, mouthguard, goggles and stick if you got

V and JV Track and Field: Darrell Hampton, off-campus coach 8th
year. Voluntary pre-season conditioning Mon-Thursday either on the

through Friday at 4:00 on the BHS track. Wear workout attire
(including sweatshirt). Asst. Coach Humphrey Garrett is available in

Senior / Junior Section
1. Seniors- February 1, 1:20 pm - did you apply to SF State? Have
questions about your application status or the school in general?
Meet with Ms McClendon, our SF State representative in D221 to get
these questions answered. Please sign up in advance in D221.
*2. Juniors- FREE SAT prep class will be held at Berkeley high on
Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 pm in H206 for 10 weeks.
The first class will be held on Wednesday, February 7. No sign up is
necessary. Bring a calculator and pencils to the first class. For
more information, see Ms. Abrams in D221.
3. Scholarships- Gill Scholarship- Open to graduating seniors with
financial need who are planning to major in business, computer
science, engineering, health science, math or the natural sciences.
$1,000 scholarship renewable for four years of college. Deadline:
March 20. Applications available in D221.
4. NIAAA Student Athlete Scholar- Open to current juniors and seniors
who have a minimum B+ average and an ACT score of 24 or an SAT score
of 1100 who has participated in two sports. Deadline: February 28.
Award: $1,000 and $2,000. Applications available in D221 and at
www.niaaa.org
5. Black College Awareness Fair, Saturday, February 3, 10-2:00 pm.
DeAnza Community College Gymnasium, 21250 Stevens Creek Blvd.,
Cupertino. Admission is free. Representatives from over 20 HBCU's,
financial aid and admissions presentations and panel discussion from
HBCU graduates. RSVP to Natalie.Walker at xerox.com or call

6. Seniors: Financial Aid Workshops- We will be holding workshops on
filling out the FAFSA both before and after school. All workshops
will be held in the BHS Library. Please sign up in D221 so that we
make sure that we have enough computers for everyone. Bring with you
completed 2006 tax returns and or information on income for you and
your parents. This information will not shared with anyone. In
order to best prepare for the workshop, pick up a FAFSA on the Web
Worksheet in D221 prior to the workshop. Then you can fill out the
requested information and know what your questions are. The dates
for the workshops are:

7. Tuesday, February 13- Cash for College workshop will held at 6:30
pm in the BHS Library. A workshop will be held at 6:30 pm in the BHS
Library. At the workshop, held in both English and Spanish, you will
be able to get help filling out the FAFSA. One participant in the
workshop who completes the FAFSA and the Cal Grant form by March 2
will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship. For additional cash for
College workshops at other locations and dates go to
www.calgrants.org and click on the "Workshops" tab.
8. Alpha Kappa Alpha- Open to African and African American seniors
with a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5 who have recent community
involvement and plans to attend a two or four year college
immediately after graduation. Applications available in D221. $1,000
scholarship. Deadline: April 30.
9. Unlocking Doors: A Scholarship for Women- female high school
senior whose parent/guardian income does not exceed $45,000, who will
be the first in their family to attend a four year college and who is
a US citizen or legal resident. Deadline: March 31. $1,000
scholarship. Applications are available in the College Career Center
or at www.unlockingdoors.org
10. Scholar Athlete Milk Moustache of the Year - Open to seniors.
Judging is based on academic performance, athletic excellence,
leadership, community service and milk experience. Applications are
available at www.bodybymilk.com. Deadline: March 9. Each of the 25
winners will receive a $7,500 scholarship.
11. PG&E Employees Scholarship- open to all graduating seniors whose
aren't/guardian is a PG&E customer with a minimum unweighted GPA of
3.5 and a minimum SAT score of 1500 or comparable ACT score who is
actively involved in outside activities. At least ten scholarships of
$2,000 each. Deadline: March 1. Applications available in D221.
Events/ Performance
*1. Celebrate Black History Month by learning more about American
History. Who was the first African American Supreme Court justice?
Come to the library to find the answer and then fill out an answer
sheet. Students who get all weekly questions right will get a prize
at the end of the month.
*2. BHS Jazz Combos will play at Anna's Jazz Island, 2120 Allston
Way, Berkeley, on Sunday, February 4, 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm. Come and
hear the groups that placed 1st and 2nd in the Combo Division at both
the Redwood Empire Jazz Festival and the Folsom Jazz Festival! Cover
charge $5 students; $10 general; Anna's is an all age venue.
3. Sign up for Auditions for "HAIR" the spring musical. Sign up now,
1st floor A- building. Auditions are February 5th and 6th.
4. Lifelong Medical is holding a free dental care day on Saturday,
February 3 from 9:00 - 2:00 pm. This free dental care day is in
celebration of National Dental Month- see Mrs. Parker in the Parent
Center for more information in room D224.
SALES
1. If your club wants a page in the yearbook, come to H102 during 7th
period to claim your page. Quarter, half, and full pages are being
sold. Please come as soon as possible. They're going fast!
2. Prices are $80.00 for yearbooks. Please purchase your yearbooks in
H102 each day. Financial Assistance is also available to those who
qualify see Mr. Knight during 7th in H102 to apply.
