2.  If you are a BHS student transferring to Independent Student next
semester, please see Belinda McDaniel on January 30th .  Very
important.

3. Satisfy those nagging AP/Honors Math hours and provide Community
Service. Math Works needs you! Help Willard Middle School students
succeed. Volunteer Tutoring Hours Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4 pm
at Willard (2425 Stuart St. near Telegraph).

4. Here is your health fact of the week, brought to you by the BHSHC
Youth Advisory Board:  Marijuana smoke is harmful.  Because marijuana
smoke is pulled deeply into the lungs, it can cause more lung damage
than tobacco.  It is heavier than tobacco smoke and it is harder to
get out of the lungs when exhaling.  Smoking one joint is equivalent
to the health effects of smoking 10 cigarettes.

5. JOBS:  Café Rouge, 1782 Fourth Street, Berkeley, is looking to hire
one or two students. 
The openings are: Friday evening from 6:00 - 9:30 pm as a food runner,
Saturday, noon -3:30pm as a busser and Sunday, noon-4:00pm as a food
runner.  No experience necessary.  Bring a resume including
information on the high school activities in which you participated or
any work experience, as well as, an unofficial transcript to the
restaurant, addressed to Kip.

Sports

*1. Attention all Fall Athletes:  If you have not turned in your
uniform or equipment from last season, you must turn it in to the
athletic office this week.  If you do not turn it in by Friday, you
risk receiving an F for athletics, not receiving your diploma, and/or
not being eligible for future seasons of sport.

*2. Congratulations to Senior Paul Navo for placing 3rd at the Miller
Varsity Wrestling Tournament in the 130 pound weight class this past
Saturday.  Paul went 4-1 and took home the Bronze medal by pinning his
final opponent from Douglas High School in Nevada in the 3rd period.

*3. After finals on Friday come support the BHS Boys basketball teams
at home against El Cerrito High School.  First game show your BHS
pride!

4. Attention all students who want to go out for Spring sports:
Baseball, Softball, Badminton, Track and Field, Swimming and Diving,
Crew, Boys tennis, Boys Volleyball, or Boys golf.  You must turn in a
complete Athletic packet to your coach before the first you can try
out.  If you haven't taken a physical within the last 9 months, you
must schedule an appointment with your doctor or the health center
now.  You cannot tryout without having a physical and a complete
packet.  The first day of Spring season is Monday, February 5th.

*5. Attention all boys and girls track distance runners:  Come to a
meeting in H307 on Tuesday, January 30th at 3:30 pm.  Meet the new
distance coach, Brian Bort, and hear about the upcoming track season.
Completed athletic packets can be turned in to Coach Bort on that day.

6. BHS Boys Lacrosse: Come check out "the fastest game on two feet," a
grueling test of speed and stamina.  Lacrosse is THE original American
sport, played originally by North American Indians as early as the
15th century.  Captain's Conditioning: 3:30 pm at the field, January
29- February 2.  Team Try-outs: exact location and time to be
announced, February 5-15.

*7. Boys LaCrosse Conditioning begins this week!  Meet at the track,
everyday at 3:45pm  Bring your running shoes and get in shape for
February 5th team tryouts!

8. Girls Softball Conditioning has begun.  Week of Finals:  Wednesday
and Friday 1:30 - 2:30pm.  The last week of conditioning will be
Tuesday/Wednesday/Friday 3:45-5:00pm.  Tryouts will begin February 5
at 4:00-till dark.

9. All boys interested in going out for the golf team this should come
to an informational meeting on Wednesday, January 31st at 3:30 pm in
the Athletic Office.  Completed athletic packets may be turned in at
that time.  If you plan on going out of golf, please be sure to have a
valid physical and complete packet to turn in by the Feb. 5th start of
season.


Senior / Junior Section

*1. Seniors, cap and gown orders will be taken January 31st during
lunch. Look for the white tent from Acheivers.  This will be the last
day to turn in pre-orders, so be there! 

*2. SENIORS- February 1, 1:20 pm – did you apply to SF State?  Have
questions about your application status or the school in general?
Meet with Ms McClendon, our SF State representative in D221 to get
these questions answered. Please sign up in advance in D221.

*3.Scholarships- Gill Scholarship- Open to graduating seniors with
financial need who are planning to major in business, computer
science, engineering, health science, math or the natural sciences.
$1,000 scholarship renewable for four years of college.  Deadline:
March 20.  Applications available in D221.

*4. NIAA Student Athlete Scholar- Open to current juniors and seniors
who have a minimum B+ average and an ACT score of 24 or an SAT score
of 1100 who has participated in two sports.  Deadline: February 28.
Award: $1,000 and $2,000.  Applications available in D221 and at
www.niaaa.org

5. Black College Awareness Fair, Saturday, February 3, 10-2:00 pm.
DeAnza Community College Gymnasium, 21250 Stevens Creek Blvd.,
Cupertino.  Admission is free.  Representatives from over 20 HBCU's,
financial aid and admissions presentations and panel discussion from

6. For Seniors: Financial Aid Workshops- We will be holding workshops
on filling out the FAFSA both before and after school.  All workshops
will be held in the BHS Library.  Please sign up in D221 so that we
make sure that we have enough computers for everyone.  Bring with you
completed 2006 tax returns and or information on income for you and
your parents.  This information will not shared with anyone.  In order
to best prepare for the workshop, pick up a FAFSA on the Web Worksheet
in D221 prior to the workshop.  Then you can fill out the requested
information and know what your questions are.  The dates for the
workshops are:

7. Tuesday, February 13- Cash for College workshop will held at 6:30
pm in the BHS Library.  At the workshop, held in both English and
Spanish, you will be able to get help filling out the FAFSA.  One
participant in the workshop who completes the FAFSA and the Cal Grant
form by March 2 will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.  For additional
cash for College workshops at other locations and dates go to [

8. Scholarships- There are many new scholarships available in D221.
Check out the Scholarship Box and apply for free money.

9. Scholarships:  Community NETwork scholarship- Open to African
American seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who plan to attend a two or
four year college in the fall or an accredited business school.
Minimum of $1,000 will be awarded.  Deadline: February 23.
Applications available in D221.

10. Alpha Kappa Alpha- Open to African and African American seniors
with a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5 who have recent community
involvement and plans to attend a two or four year college immediately
after graduation. Applications available in D221.  $1,000 scholarship.
Deadline: April 30.

11. Unlocking Doors:  A Scholarship for Women- female high school
senior whose parent/guardian 's income does not exceed $45,000 who
will be the first in their family to attend a four year college and
who is a US citizen or legal resident.  Deadline: March 31.  $1,000
scholarship.  Applications are available in the College Career Center
or at www.unlockingdoors.org

12. Scholar Athlete Milk Moustache of the Year - Open to seniors.
Judging is based on academic performance, athletic excellence,
leadership, community service and milk experience. Applications are
available at www.bodybymilk.com.  Deadline: March 9.  Each of the 25
winners will receive a $7,500 scholarship.

13. Ronald McDonald House of Charity- Open to Seniors planning to
attend two or four year college or vocational/technical school.  Must
be legal US residents.  Scholarships available for students who have
at least one parent of Asian-Pacific heritage.  A separate scholarship
is open to students of all backgrounds.  Numerous scholarships of at
least $1,000 are available. 
Applications available in D221 and at
www.rmhc.org.  Deadline:  February 15.

14. PSAT scores may be picked up any day in D221 at lunchtime or after
school from 3:15 to 4:00 pm.

15. FOR SENIORS- Standard CAL GRANTS - Cal Grants are free money from
the state of California based on the student's GPA and family income.
The money may be used at any accredited California college, public or
private.  Applying for the Cal Grant is very easy-just fill out the
Cal Grant Information Release Form, available in D173 and D221.  This
is a very simple form which takes less than 5 minutes to complete.
Deadline to turn in the form is January 30.

16. PG&E Employees Scholarship- open to all graduating seniors whose
parent/guardian is a PG&E customer, and with a minimum unweighted GPA
of 3.5 and a minimum SAT score of 1500 or comparable ACT score who is
actively involved in outside activities. At least ten scholarships of
$2,000 each. Deadline: March 1. Applications available in D221.

            
Events/ Performance

1. Sign up for Auditions for "HAIR" the spring musical.  Sign up now,
1st floor A building. Auditions are February 5th and 6th.

*2. How much trash does BHS make in one day?  How much money does BHS
pay for trash removal?  How can you reduce the amount of trash at BHS.

*3. Congratulations to BHS students Matt Seneca (second place), Milena
Schallar(third place), and Joe Shemuel (honorable mention), winners in
the Bay Area Writers High School Travel Writing Essay Contest.  You
can read their winning essays on line by clicking on High School
Contest at www.batw.org.


SALES                                     

1. Winterball tickets are still available!  Come out during lunch and
buy your tickets.  All students who play on any sports team here at
BHS can purchase tickets at a discount price in D148.

2. If your club wants a page in the yearbook, come to H102 during 7th
period to claim your page.  Quarter, half, and full pages are being
sold.  Please come as soon as possible.  They're going fast!

3. Prices are $80.00 for yearbooks. Please purchase your yearbooks in
H102 each day. Financial Assistance is also available to those who
qualify see Mr. Knight during 7th in H102 to apply.
