STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN

Administration

1. Freshman Leadership meeting is next Friday at lunch.  If you are
interested in joining leadership come to the leadership office in the
lunch room. Freshman only.  Don't forget freshman leadership, Friday,
January 19th.

3. Satisfy those nagging AP/Honors Math hours and provide Community
Service. Math Works needs you!  Help Willard Middle School students
succeed.  Volunteer Tutoring Hours Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4 pm
at Willard (2425 Stuart St. near Telegraph).

4. Students!  January Finals are just around the corner.  Make these
last few weeks count and get help where you need it:

Clubs

*1. Earphone English- come at lunch today in C116.  Last chance to get
extra credit for this semester's grades!

2. Interested in earning community credits?  Have a free period you
don't know what to do with?  Want to change electives?  Look into the
peer Tutoring club, ask your counselor or talk to Miss. Lovett in
H305.

3. Attention CSF Participants: Don't forget, 3 hours of community
service and $15 of fundraising are due in D221 by Wednesday, January

Sports

*1. Girls Softball conditioning has begun.  Meet on the track Tuesday-Thursday
at 3:45 pm.  Get in shape for the Feb. 5 tryouts.

2. This is the last month to join Berkeley High Crew;  Learn how to
row, get into great shape and participate in a national champion level
team.  No previous experience is necessary.  There is a parents
organizing meeting January 17, 7pm in the career center.  To learn

3. BHS Boys Lacrosse - Come check out the "the fastest game on two
feet" a grueling test of speed and stamina.  Lacrosse is THE original
American sport, played originally by North American Indians as early
as the 15th century.  Captain's Conditioning: 3:30 pm at the field,
January 15-19 and January  29-February 2.  Team Try-outs: exact
location and time to be announced, February 5-15.

4. Attention all students who want to go out for Spring sports:
Baseball, Softball, Badminton, Track and Field, Swimming and Diving,
Crew, Boys tennis, Boys Volleyball, or Boys golf.  You must turn in a
complete Athletic packet to your coach before the first you can try
out.  If you haven't taken a physical within the last 9 months, you
must schedule an appointment with your doctor or the health center
now.  You cannot tryout without having a physical and a complete
packet.  The first day of Spring season is Monday, February 5th.

5. Voluntary Softball conditioning continues at 3:45 pm on the turf bleachers.
  We will work out Tuesday/Wednesday and Friday until tryouts begin.
Don't miss the opportunity to get in shape for the Spring Season which begins
February 5th.  Wear workout attire and running shoes.

Senior / Junior Section

1. Black College Expo - Saturday, January 20, 9:00-4:00pm, Hangar 12,
Oakland/Alameda (1050 West Tower Avenue).  Meet with representatives
from many Historically Black Colleges & Universities, attend seminars
on preparing for college, hot careers and more.  Seniors--bring your
transcripts and test scores for the opportunity for on the spot
acceptance and the opportunity to win scholarships.  For more

2. Scholarships:  Community NETwork scholarship- Open to African
American seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who plan to attend a two or
four year college in the fall or an accredited business school.
Minimum of $1,000 will be awarded.  Deadline: February 23.
Applications available in D221.

3. Scholarships: Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards- Open to seniors of
Hispanic heritage (at least one parent of Hispanic ancestry) who are a
US Citizen or permanent resident  who are intending to enroll as a
full time college student next year and has a minimum GPA of
unweighted 3.0.  Apply online at http://www.hispanicheritage.org .\
Scholarships range from $1,000 - $3,000.  Deadline, February 2.

4. Bay Area Council Scholarship Program- open to graduating seniors
who plan to attend one of the following colleges full time in 2007:
Mills, Santa Clara, Stanford, UC Berkeley , UC Davis, University of
San Francisco and who lived in an underserved neighborhood (at 80% of
area median income or below- check at
http://www.ffiec.gov/Geocode/default.aspx  ).  Applications available
in D221.  Awards range from $5,000 - $10,000.  Deadline: March 26.

5. University of Saint Andrews, Creative Writing and Scottish Studies
pre-college experience.  Open to students who have at least completed
10th grade.  Four week program taught by U of St. Andrews faculty.
Apply online.  Scottish Studies.

6. PSAT scores may be picked up any day in D221 at lunchtime or after
school from 3:15 to 4:00 pm.

7. FOR SENIORS- Standard CAL GRANTS - Cal Grants are free money from
the state of California based on the student's GPA and family income.
The money may be used at any accredited California college, public or
private.  Applying for the Cal Grant is very easy--just fill out the
Cal Grant Information Release Form, available in D173 and D221.  This
is a very simple form which takes less than 5 minutes to complete.
Deadline to turn in the form is January 30.

8. Sophomores and Juniors - Are you interested in going to a college
that is made for high school students?  Do you want more control over
what classes you take and how you use your time?  Are you ready to
move far from home?  Come to a presentation by a Berkeley High grad
who attends Simons Rock College in the East Coast.  Wednesday, January
17 at lunchtime in conference room B.

9. CAL STATE Applications - many Cal State campuses are still
accepting applications.  They are: Cal Maritime, Bakersfield, Channel
Islands, Chico, Dominguez Hills(deadline is April 1), East Bay,
Fresno, Fullerton (open only to Computer Science and Engineering
majors), Humboldt (tentative deadline is June 1), Los Angeles,
Monterey Bay, Northridge, Sacramento, San Bernadino, San Francisco
(deadline is January 15), San Jose (deadline is March 1), Sonoma
(deadline is January 22), Stanislaus.  If you need help with your
applications, see Ms. Abrams or Mr. Saraceno in D221.

10. PG&E Employees Scholarship - open to all graduating seniors whose
parent/guardian is a PG&E customer, and who has a minimum unweighted
GPA of 3.5 and a minimum SAT score of 1500 or comparable ACT score who
is actively involved in outside activities. At least ten scholarships
of $2,000 each.  Deadline: March 1.  Applications available in D221.

12. College visits to Berkeley High- Seniors: Sign up in D221 to
attend college presentations. You must also pick up an authorization
form for your teacher to sign so that you may miss his or her class.

Events/ Performance

*1. Sign up for auditions for "HAIR" the spring musical.  Sign up now, 1st
floor A- building.  Auditions are February 5 and 6.

2. Dance Production 2007 is here!  Come out and support some of the
greatest dancers and choreographers Berkeley High has to offer.  Hip
Hop, Modern, Jazz and even Belly Dance!  Shows are Friday and Saturday
nights, the 19th, and 20th at 8 pm in the Little Theater.
Students $5, General $10.  These shows will sell out so come early for
a good seat!

3. From violin to tuba, come hear the BHS Orchestra & Concert Band
WINTER CHAMBER CONCERT!  Thursday, January 18th, 7:30PM, Berkeley High
Little Theater.  Free, refreshments for sale.

SALES

1. Winterball tickets are on sale all this week at lunch and after
school for $60.  Tickets will be sold on the community theater steps.
Cash only accepted.

*2. BART tickets for January are in.  Please pick up your BART passes
ASAP.  Next BART ticket order will be January 22nd and 23rd at
lunchtime in D224.

3. If your club wants a page in the yearbook, come to H102 during 7th
period to claim your page.  Quarter, half, and full pages are being
sold. Please come as soon as possible.

4. Prices are $80.00 for yearbooks. Please purchase your yearbooks in
H102 each day. Financial Assistance is also available to those who
qualify.  See Mr. Knight during 7th in H102 to apply.
