SAT WORD OF THE DAY: TAINT – to pollute or make impure; adulterate.
Before environmental laws were enacted, the waters of the Great Lakes
were tainted by effluents dumped by factories in the Midwest.
*Mr. Saraceno, Ms. Harris and I wish you all a safe, relaxing and happy
holiday and new year. We look forward to seeing you back in the
College/Career Center rested and relaxed. I will be checking my e-mail
periodically during the break if you have urgent questions that need to
be answered.
PSAT SCORES HAVE ARRIVED -- If you took the PSAT in October, you can
pick up your scores in the College/Career Center any day at lunch and
from 3:15 to 4:00 pm ONLY! You will not be able to pick them up at any
other time of the day.
FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
Thursday, January 11, 7:00 pm in the BHS Library / College and Career
Center - What's Up With College? a reality check! Come hear the true
story about going away to college. Recent Berkeley High graduates will
visit Berkeley High to tell personal stories about their
college experiences. There will be an informal discussion with students
from a wide range of schools. While the students talk in the
College/Career Center, parents/guardians of recent grads will be in the
Library to share their first hand knowledge of sending their children
off to college.
FOR SENIORS
SENIORS – don’t forget to send your OFFICIAL SAT or ACT scores to each
college you applied to. For SAT, go to www.collegeboard.com and click
on “Send Scores.” For ACT, go to www.act.org and click on “Send
Scores.”
Still working on your essays? Essay readers will be here to help you,
today, Wednesday, from 2:30 to 3:30 pm
If you missed the presentation on filling out the FAFSA on December 7,
you may sign up to borrow the DVD for up to 2 nights. Please e-mail me
a request (iabrams at berkeley.k12.ca.us), along with your student’s name,
and I will let you know when it is available. Senior families only,
please.
CAL STATE APPLICATIONS – many Cal State campuses are still accepting
applications. They are: Cal Maritime, Bakersfield, Channel Islands,
Chico, Dominguez Hills, East Bay, Fresno, Fullerton (open only to
Computer Science and Engineering majors), Los Angeles, Monterey Bay,
Northridge, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Stanislaus, Humboldt, San
Francisco, San Jose, Sonoma. If you need help with your applications,
see Ms. Abrams or Mr. Saraceno in D221.
UC Riverside and UC Merced are still accepting applications. To apply,
download a paper application from
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/openmajors
FINANCIAL AID – If you are applying for financial aid, you cannot fill
out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid which is required by
all colleges until January 1, 2007. However, you can apply for your
Personal Identification Number (PIN) now so that you will be ready to
submit your application online. Go to www.pin.ed.gov and fill out this
very short application twice – once to get a PIN for the student and
once for one parent.
SAT/ACT TEST DATES – December 26 is the regular registration deadline
for the January 27 SAT test. January 5 is the regular registration
deadline for the February 10 ACT test. Register at
www.collegeboard.com.
SCHOLARSHIPS
*McElvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship – Qualifications:
graduating senior planning to attend a four year college or university
in the US who owns and operates a business or non-profit which has at
least one employee. Scholarship: Up to $10,000 per year for four
years. Apply online at www.mckelveyfoundation.org Deadline: January
31.
Kaiser Permanente Asian Association Scholarship - Graduating senior of
Asian descent with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who demonstrates the potential
to be an Asian leader through school or community activities or in the
face of unusual circumstances. Five scholarships of $2,000 each.
Deadine: March 2.
Beverage Industry College Scholarship Program – Students must have
parents or grandparents who are employed full-time with an organization
holding a valid California beer/wine/spirits alcohol license and be
planning to attend a four year college beginning in the fall. Apply
online at www.christermon.com. Deadline: February 1.
SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS
*Experiment in International Living – three to five week cultural and
language immersion summer programs in a wide variety of locales and
continents. Most programs begin at the end of June. Costs range from
$3,900 and up. Need-based financial aid is available. Applications
available in D221 or at www.worldlearning.org Deadline May 1.
Stanford Medical Youth Science Program – summer residential program
open to economically disadvantaged high school sophomores and juniors.
Students spend 5 weeks on the Stanford campus at no charge and are
personally mentored by medical and graduate students and health care
professionals. Students inter at a local hospital two days per week,
get instruction by Stanford faculty and staff and receive college
admissions counseling. Applications available in D221 or at
http://smysp.stanford.edu Deadline: March 15.
California State Summer School for the Arts (Innerspark) offers
instruction in the fields of animation, music, dance, film and video,
theatre, creative writing and the visual arts. Four week program (July
14-August 11) studying with professional arts, writers and performers.
Cost: $1,350 includes room, board and tuition. Scholarships
available. Applications available at www.innerspark.us Deadline:
February 28.
Summer Internship Program for Latino students sponsored by the
Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. Eight weeks, all expenses
paid, plus $2,000 stipend. For more information, visit www.chci.org or
