SAT WORD OF THE DAY: MALEVOLENCE – ill will; malice. For many, the
wicked witch of the East in the Wizard of Oz was their first exposure
to malevolence.
PSAT SCORES HAVE ARRIVED -- If you took the PSAT in October, you can
pick up your scores in the College/Career Center at lunch and from 3:15
to 4:00 pm ONLY! You will not be able to pick them up at any other
time.
FOR ALL STUDENTS
Presentation on College of Alameda Private Pilot Ground School class –
Tuesday, December 19, 9:30 am in D221. Alameda College is offering a
class, free to high school students, where you will learn how you can
become a pilot and acquire private pilot ground school skills. This
class does not offer flying lessons, but after you complete the class
you will have the opportunity to take the FAA Private Pilot
Aeronautical Knowledge Test and earn 4 college credits. Classes held on
Wednesdays from 6:00-10:00 pm, starting January 17. Come to the
presentation to learn more! Sign up in D221.
Young Artist Award Competition 2007 for piano, voice and orchestral
instruments. Over $1700 in prizes. Entrant must be a resident of
Alameda or Contra Costa County. $25 application fee. Applications
available in D221 or call 925-829-4922. Deadline: March 27.
You are a SUPERHERO! Essay contest. Write a creative story about you,
the Superhero. Application and more information available in D221.
Received deadline: January 1. The top 3 student essays will win $250
each.
United Nations Association-USA National High School Essay Contest.
Open to all students, grades 9-12. Write an essay of 1,500 words or
less on the importance of maternal health. First prize: $3,000;
second prize: $1,500; third prize: $750. The exact questions are
available in D221. Deadline: January 5, 2007. Questions: phone

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
*SCHOLARSHIP FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS – Asian Pacific Fund – open to
students who are of Filipino heritage or who are children of farm
workers regardless of ethnic background. Scholarships range in value
from $1,500 to $5,000, some of which are renewable. Check out the
Banatao Filipino American Scholarship, Soledad Fernandez Scholarship,
and the Maria Elena Yuchengco Memorial Journalism Scholarship.

FOR JUNIORS – INTERESTED IN WORKING IN WASHINGTON, D.C. AS A PAGE NEXT
SEMESTER? Congresswoman Barbara Lee has a position available for a
high school junior, at least 16 years of age, with a minimum 3.0 GPA
who would like to be a congressional page/intern in Washington, D.C.
The term will be January - June 2007. School and board is provided.

Two full scholarships are being offered to Bay Area low-income minority
students to attend the Woolman Semester. The Woolman Semester offers
juniors, seniors and post-grads a semester in the Sierra Foothills
taking action-oriented courses focused on the studies of peace,
justice, and environmental sustainability, while earning full high
school credit (in UC-approved college prep
classes). Applications are due by December 15th. Contact Kathy Runyan

SCHOLARSHIP FOR JUNIORS – Discover Card Tribune Award Program –
Students with a minimum cumulative GPA for 9th and 10th grades of 2.75,
who demonstrated leadership, are actively contributing to their
communities and have experienced and overcome a significant obstacle

If you missed the presentation on filling out the FAFSA on December 7,
you may sign up to borrow the DVD for up to 2 nights. Please e-mail me
a request (iabrams at berkeley.k12.ca.us), along with your student’s name,
and I will let you know when it is available. Senior families only,
please.
If you have not yet met with your College/Career Advisor (Ms. Abrams:
last names beginning with A-Lej and CAS students; Mr. Saraceno: Lek-Z
and CPA students), we would like to meet with you to discuss your
future plans and let you know what options you have, whether it be 2 or
4 year college or something else. Sign up in D221 for an appointment
this week.
CAL STATE APPLICATIONS – many Cal State campuses are still accepting
applications. They are: Cal Maritime, Bakersfield, Channel Islands,
Chico, Dominguez Hills, East Bay, Fresno, Fullerton (open only to
Computer Science and Engineering majors), Los Angeles, Monterey Bay,
Northridge, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Stanislaus, Humboldt, San
Francisco, San Jose, Sonoma. If you need help with your applications,
see Ms. Abrams or Mr. Saraceno in D221.
High School Senior: Looking for a job? Child care for two children who
need after-school pick up from school. Also driving to after-school
lessons, helping with homework, preparing dinner, laundry. M-F, hours
vary but job does not begin before 2:45 on any day. Must have your own
car, a valid CA driver's license, and a clean record. $12/hour, plus

Applying to Sonoma State? If you have a GPA of 3.0 or above and are
applying for fall 2007, check out the many scholarships, ranging from
$250 to $3,000 per year, available at

FINANCIAL AID – If you are applying for financial aid, you cannot fill
out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid which is required by
all colleges until January 1, 2007. However, you can apply for your
Personal Identification Number (PIN) now so that you will be ready to
submit your application online. Go to www.pin.ed.gov and fill out this
very short application twice – once to get a PIN for the student and
once for one parent.
Are you a senior African-American male who is interested in becoming a
teacher? You may be able to go to college for LOW COST! This program
is a collaboration between Clemon University and three black colleges
(Benedict College, Claflin University and Morris College) to train,
certify and secure employment for African-American males in South
Carolina. If you are interested, go to

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – December 26 is the regular registration deadline
for the January 27 SAT test. January 5 is the regular registration
deadline for the February 10 ACT test. Register at

SCHOLARSHIPS

scholarships available throughout the year. Check it out at

Sam Walton Community Scholarship – Open to graduating seniors who is
not a Wal-Mart associate or immediate relative, has been permanent
legal resident for at least one year, has taken SAT/ACT tests, can
prove financial need, and has at least 2.5 GPA. Apply at
https://www.scholarshipadministrators.net and use the access code SWCS.
For Frequently Asked Questions, go to www.walmartfoundation.org then
click on “Education”. Deadline: January 12. Scholarship is for
$1,000.
Italian Catholic Federation – Catholic graduating senior of Italian
descent who have at least a 3.2 GPA. Applications available in D221 or
by calling 1-888-423-1924. Deadline March 15. $400 scholarship.
eQuality Scholarship – Graduating senior living in northern or central
California who is planning to attend any two or four year college,
including trade schools who has been involved in volunteer activities
promoting understanding of and equality for the LGBT community. Essay
and recommendation required. Deadline: February 28. At least 10
scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded. Application available in
D221 and at www.allyaction.org/scholarship
SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS
Summer Science and Engineering Program for High School young women
entering grades 9-12 in fall 2007, July 1-28, at Smith College. For

University of San Andrews, Creative Writing and Scottish Studies
pre-college experience. Open to students who have at least completed
