STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN

Administration

1. Students, parents and staff- TODAY, December 6th is a Late Start day.
There will be a slightly different schedule though.  School will start at
10 am as normal, but lunch will be different.  The schedule is as follows:
Staff Meeting                 8:00 - 9:45 am
Period 1                        10:00 - 10:40 am
Period 2                        10:46 - 11:30 am
Period 3                        11:36 - 12:16 pm
LUNCH                        12:16 - 12:56 pm
Period 4                          1:02 - 1:42 pm
Period 5                          1:48 - 2:28 pm
Period 6                          2:34 - 3:15 pm
Period 7                          3:21 - 4:01 pm

2. The Student Directory has been distributed to every 2nd period class.
If you did not receive one the Front Desk has copies.  Teachers!  If you
have extra copies PLEASE return them to the front desk.

3. Young Artist Award Competition 2007 for piano, voice and orchestral
instruments.  Over $1700 in prizes.  Entrant must be a resident of Alameda
or contra Costa County.  $25 application fee.  Applications available in
D221 or call Diane Barton-Brown at 925-932-4710. No phone calls after 9 pm.
Deadline: March 27.

4. Tutoring:  After school Math Tutoring Program, H109 on Tuesdays
and Thursdays 3:15-4:30 pm focusing on Algebra and Geometry.  New AP
Biology Tutorial:  The science department will operate an after
school tutorial starting Wednesday, December 6th.  Mr. Fong will
answer questions and help facilitate student study groups most
Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30 pm in room G305.  Please note two
exceptions which are: December 13 moved to December 14th and
Thursday, January 17th moved to January 18th from 4:30-5:30 pm in
room G305.

5.  Like google? Like yahoo?  Why not search goodsearch?  It's just as
good as google, the only difference is that every time you use
goodsearch.com Berkeley High School makes a penny.  Just go to
goodsearch.com and type in "Berkeley High School Development Group"
and then search as normal.

6. JOBS: The Museum of Children's Art is looking for High School age
teens to assist in our Winter Art Camp.  Teens must be interested in
working with younger children in art.  They must be flexible, good
humored, and willing to help with clean up, prep jobs and
supervising/assisting with children ages 5-12.  Camp operates from
8am - 6pm, Tuesday - Friday, December 26-29 and January 2-5.  For

7. JOBS: Looking for experienced student with good computer skills,
filing and organization 2-6 hours a week with flexible hours. $8-$10

Clubs

1.  Condom club!  Brought to you by PASSHEN: Peers Advocating Safety and
Sexual health now.  Come learn the facts about HIV, STDs and how to be
safe, Wednesday, December 13th during lunch in H114.  You must attend the
entire time to get a condom club sticker on your ID.  Don't forget to
bring your lunch and  your student ID.

*2. There will be a mandatory Black Student Union meeting on Friday,
December 8, 2006 in H214.  This is important meeting to discuss Richard D.
Navies week and African American History Month.


Senior / Junior Section

1. Hey seniors!  We don't have enough money for a senior trip right
now. So we are having a fundraiser.  We are selling senior spell-out
posters for five dollars.  To buy one, look for seniors carrying the
posters around.  You will be supporting the senior trip and you get
to hang it on your wall!  It's a win/win purchase.

2. Italian Catholic Federation Scholarship - Open to Catholic
graduating seniors of Italian descent who have at least a 3.2 GPA.
Applications available in D221 or by calling 1-888-423-1924.
Deadline March 15.  $400 scholarship.

3. High School Senior:  Looking for a job?  Child care for two
children who need after school pick up from school.  Also driving to
after school lessons, helping with homework, preparing dinner,
laundry.  M-F.  hours vary but job begins after 2:45 pm each day.
Must have your own car, Valid drivers license, and a clean record.
$12/hour, plus $20/week gas.  Call Mindy: 547-0125.

4. eQuality Scholarship - Graduating senior living in northern or
central California who is planning to attend any two or four year
college, including trade schools who has been involved in volunteer
activities promoting and understanding of and equality for the LGBT
community.  Essay and recommendation required.  Deadline: February
28.  At least 10 scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded.

5. UC Merced has extended the application deadline to the end of
January and is holding an On-the-Spot Admissions Day on Saturday,
Decmber 9.  To participate, simply call (866) 270-7301 and bring a
copy of your transcript (unofficial is okay) and your test scores.
Check http://admissions.ucmerced.edu for more information.  Next year
they will be introducing a new major in economics.
   They are also considering other majors, including history,
literature, and political science.  A number of new minors are under
review, including education, anthropology, and sociology.  Apply for
these majors by indicating "undeclared" on your application and
selecting your major of choice when you register for classes.  UC
Merced provides a solid foundation for graduate education or for
admission to a professional school in health sciences (pre-med), law,
business, or teaching.

6. Applying to Sonoma State?  If you have a GPA of 3.0 or above and
are applying for fall 2007, check out the many scholarships, ranging
from $250 to $3,000 per year, available at

the application are also available in D221.  Deadline: January 15.

7. Tell your parents - Financial Aid workshop for Senior Parents:
Thursday, December 7, 6:30 PM in the BHS Library.  A representative
from the UC Berkeley financial aid office will walk us through the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) line by line and
answer all of your questions.  I will also discuss the CSS Profile
which is required by some private schools.  Sessions will be held in
both English and Spanish.


Events/ Performance

1. The Jacket is looking for 3 new columnists for the 2nd semester.  If
you're interested, please email [ mailto:news at jacket.org ]news at jacket.org
to request an application or stop by G105.  Completed applications are due
by January 12.  If you have any questions send an email to news at jacket.org.

*2. This is for staff and teachers ONLY!   Students are not to attend.
Come to the Health Center Open House!  Wednesday, December 6th, 3:15-
5:15 pm in H105.  There will be complimentary services, lots of
information and tours and lots of great raffle prizes.

3. Tchaikovsky, Bach, Dvorak and more!  Come hear the BHS concert
band and orchestra on Thursday, December 7th, 7:30p.m., in the
Berkeley Community Theater.  Refreshments will be available for sale.

4. The Berkeley High sponsored Holiday Meal will be on Saturday,
December 9th. We need volunteers to work on Friday and Saturday.
There will be an informational meeting for interested volunteers on
Wednesday, December 6th after school in G210.  You can get math
tutoring, so come and help your community.

5. While you are out shopping this week, pick up some extra canned
goods and bring them to your second period class.  The canned food
drive is still going on. Every day counts!  The class with the most
cans will get a pizza party so bring in your cans.  The cans will be
used in BHS Annual Holiday Meal on December 9th.


SALES

1. Berkeley High's first ever baking club bake sale will be this Thursday,
December 7th.  Come on out to the Senior steps at lunch time and bring
your friends.  Please support!

2. Early bird ticket sales for the Winterball are this week! Buy your
Winter Ball tickets for just $45 December 5th-7th after school at the
Allston St. Box Office.  WinterBall will be January 27th at the
Dunsmuir House and Gardens in Oakland.  The price goes up every week!
After that, it goes up $5 each week.

3. Prices are $80.00 for yearbooks. Please purchase your yearbooks in H102
each day. Financial Assistance is also available to those who qualify see
Mr. Knight during 7th in H102 to apply.
