SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  CULPABLE – guilty; blameworthy.  The task of a 
jury is to determine whether or not a defendant is culpable for the 
crime with which he has been charged.

FOR ALL STUDENTS
*Young Artist Award Competition 2007 for piano, voice and orchestral 
instruments.  Over $1700 in prizes.  Entrant must be a resident of 
Alameda or Contra Costa County.  $25 application fee.  Applications 
available in D221 or call 925-829-4922.  Deadline:  March 27.

You are a SUPERHERO! Essay contest.  Write a creative story about you, 
the Superhero.  Application and more information available in D221.  
Received deadline:  January 1.  The top 3 student essays will win $250 
each.

United Nations Association-USA National High School Essay Contest.  
Open to all students, grades 9-12.  Write an essay of 1,500 words or 
less on the importance of maternal health.  First prize:  $3,000; 
second prize: $1,500; third prize: $750.  The exact questions are 
available in D221.  Deadline:  January 5, 2007.  Questions:  phone

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
The Center for Clinical Immunology at Stanford University Summer Intern 
Program.  If you are a current junior or senior who will have completed 
a biology class by the end of this school year and are interested in 
biology research, apply for this 8 week summer program consisting of 
lab research, lecture and some clinical exposure.  The program includes 
a $1,500 stipend to each attendee.  Housing is not provided.

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
UC IRVINE STAY-OVER PROGRAM – Juniors and seniors who are at least 16 
years old are eligible.  Participants spend the night in the dorms with 
a current student, eat in the dining hall, attend classes and learn 
about the clubs and activities at UC Irvine. Overnights are available 
Monday-Thursday, January 16-March 8. Applications are available in

go to www.housing.uci.edu/has/sop  There is a $25 charge, however some 
scholarships are available.

FOR SENIORS
High School Senior: Looking for a job?  Child care for two children who 
need after-school pick up from school. Also driving to after-school 
lessons, helping with homework, preparing dinner, laundry. M-F, hours 
vary but job does not begin before 2:45 on any day.  Must have your own 
car, a valid CA driver's license, and a clean record.  $12/hour, plus 
$20/week gas. Call Mindy: 547-0125.

UC Merced has extended the application deadline to the end of January 
and is holding an On-the-Spot Admissions Day on Saturday, December 9.  
To participate, simply call (866) 270 7301 and bring a copy of your 
transcript (unofficial is okay) and your test scores.  Check 
http://admissions.ucmerced.edu for more information.  Next year they 
will be introducing a new major in economics. They are also considering 
other majors, including history, literature, and political science. A 
number of new minors are under review, including education, 
anthropology, and sociology. Apply for these majors by indicating 
“undeclared” on your application and selecting your major of choice 
when you register for classes.  UC Merced provides a solid foundation 
for graduate education or for admission to a professional school in 
health sciences (pre-med), law, business, or teaching.
Applying to Sonoma State?  If you have a GPA of 3.0 or above and are 
applying for fall 2007, check out the many scholarships, ranging from 
$250 to $3,000 per year, available at

FINANCIAL AID – If you are applying for financial aid, you cannot fill 
out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid which is required by 
all colleges until January 1, 2007.  However, you can apply for your 
Personal Identification Number (PIN) now so that you will be ready to 
submit your application online.  Go to www.pin.ed.gov and fill out this 
very short application twice – once to get a PIN for the student and 
once for one parent.

FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOP FOR SENIOR PARENTS – Thursday, December 7, 6:30 
pm in the BHS library.  A representative from the UC Berkeley financial 
aid office will walk us through the Free Application for Federal 
Student Aid (FAFSA) line by line and answer all of your questions.  I 
will also discuss the CSS Profile which is required by some private 
schools.  Sessions will be held in both English and Spanish.

*CORRECTED VERSION – NEW INFORMATION Are you a senior African-American 
male who is interested in becoming a teacher?  You may be able to go to 
college for LOW COST!  This program is a collaboration between Clemon 
University and three black colleges (Benedict College, Claflin 
University and Morris College) to train, certify and secure employment 
for African-American males in South Carolina.  If you are interested,

the application.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – December 26 is the regular registration deadline 
for the January 27 SAT test.  Register at www.collegeboard.com.

SCHOLARSHIPS
*Italian Catholic Federation – Catholic graduating senior of Italian 
descent who have at least a 3.2 GPA.  Applications available in D221 or 
by callig 1-888-423-1924.  Deadline  March 15.  $400 scholarship.

eQuality Scholarship – Graduating senior living in northern or central 
California who is planning to attend any two or four year college, 
including trade schools who has been involved in volunteer activities 
promoting understanding of and equality for the LGBT community.  Essay 
and recommendation required.  Deadline:  February 28.  At least 10 
scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded.  Application available in 
D221 and at www.allyaction.org/scholarship

Metro PCS Community Scholars - Graduating senior who has shown 
exceptional involvement in volunteerism and community service. 
Leadership, academic record, unusual personal or family circumstances 
are also considered.  Financial need is not considered.  15 
scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded in the SF Bay Area.  
Deadline:  December 11.  Applications available in D221 and at 
www.metropcs.com/scholarship
