SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  DELETERIOUS – harmful.  The Surgeon General has 
determined that cigarette smoking is deleterious to your health.

JOB OPENING - Part-time Circuit Coach position – 8-10 hours/week at 
$8.00 hour plus commission, free membership and fun environment. Must

POETRY PRIZE FOR HIGH SCHOOL SOPHOMORES & JUNIORS- The Kenyon Review is 
now accepting submissions for the 2007 Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize for 
Young Writers contest. Application period for submission of poetry is 
November 1 -30, 2006.  There is no fee for submitting.  Submit your 
poetry online at http://www.kenyonreview.org.  Only one unpublished 
poem, one entry per person will be accepted.  The winner will receive a 
full scholarship to the Kenyon Review Young Writers workshop, and the 
poem will be published in the Kenyon Review, one of the country's most 
prestigious literary magazines.  Two runners-up will also see their 
poems published. Semi-finalists will be featured online at this web 
site.

United Nations Association-USA National High School Essay Contest.  
Open to all students, grades 9-12.  Write an essay of 1,500 words or 
less on the importance of maternal health.  First prize:  $3,000; 
second prize: $1,500; third prize: $750.  The exact questions are 
available in D221.  Deadline:  January 5, 2007.  Questions:  phone

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY - The Multicultural Institute, a local non-profit 
organization striving to reduce racial and economic inequality in 
education and promote readiness for college success, is recruiting high 
school student volunteers for its Mentoring for Academic Success 
Program at LeConte and Thousand Oaks elementary schools.  Students 
would commit to tutoring for 1 ½ hrs. each day, 2-4 days a week, or to 
being on call to fill in for other tutors on an as-needed basis.  
Proficiency in Spanish is desired.  After one semester of volunteer 
work, this position could become a paid position.  For more information

Bennington Young Writers Award - OPEN TO 10TH, 11TH AND 12TH GRADE 
STUDENTS. Students may submit poetry (a group of 3 poems), fiction (a 
short story or one-act play) or nonfiction (a personal or academic 
essay).  First place: $500; Second place: $250.  Submission forms are 
available in D221 or at www.bennington.edu under “News & Events.” 
Postmark deadline: November 15.  DEADLINE EXTENDED!

If you are applying to colleges that need a counselor recommendation, 
and you have not turned in your envelopes and forms are please see Ms. 
Harris, Ms. Abrams or Mr. Saraceno immediately.
Get help with your college essay or personal statement!  Essay readers 
are available in D221 every day from 8:00 to 9:00 am and at lunch time 
and on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday after school.  These readers are 
a great help and give you a new perspective on your essay.

UC/CSU APPLICATION WORKSHOPS: You must sign up in D221 to attend.  All 
workshops will be held in the Library Computer Lab.

COLLEGE VISITS TO BERKELEY HIGH
SENIORS:  Sign up in D221 to attend college presentations.  You must 
also pick up an authorization form for your teacher to sign so that you 
may miss his or her class.  This is a great opportunity to find out 
more about individual colleges as well as meet one of the people who 
may be reading your college application.  Pick up a complete list in 
D221.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – November 16 is the late registration deadline for 
the December 9 ACT test.  Register at www.act.org.   December 26 is the 
regular registration deadline for the January 27 SAT test.  Register at

SCHOLARSHIPS
Metro PCS Community Scholars - Graduating senior who has shown 
exceptional involvement in volunteerism and community service. 
Leadership, academic record, unusual personal or family circumstances 
are also considered.  Financial need is not considered.  15 
scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded in the SF Bay Area.  
Deadline:  December 11.  Applications available in D221 and at 
www.metropcs.com/scholarship

Mahatma Rice/Univision Radio Scholarship Program – Must be a high 
school senior in a Bay Area high school and submit an essay on the 
subject “Explain the personal challenges (other than financial) you 
expect to overcome in college.”  Entries may be in English or Spanish.  
Applications available in D221.  Deadline: February 15, 2007.
