Administration

*1. SPIRIT WEEK:  TODAY IS WESTERN DAY!

2. Algebra I, Geometry students come join student study groups.  
Mondays, Tuesdays 3:15-4:30 pm in room H109.

3. Anybody find a pair of glasses in a brown case?  Please contact
Mr. Berkman in C107.

4. If you are teenager who owes money to the Berkeley public Library,
we will forgive your fines in exchange for a bit of reading.  Read
1-2 hours on Wednesday, October 18 from 3:30 - 5:30 pm.  Come to the
Central Library's 3rd floor meeting room. Individual cases may vary.

5. BHS 2006 Spirit Week is October 16-20th  Dress days are as
follows:
Wednesday: Western Day; Thursday: Seniors-80's Day / underclassmen
wear Pajamas; Friday: Red and Gold Day (Homecoming Day)


Clubs

*1. Condom club is back!  Come learn the facts about HIV, STDs, and
how to be safe.  Our first meeting is Wednesday 10/18 at lunch in
H114, and you must stay the entire time to get a condom club sticker
on your student ID - don't forget to bring it.  Brought to you by
PASSHEN.

2. Earphone English - Another chance to drop by and check in with
Francisca, get extra-credit and exchange audio books.  Lunch
Wednesday in C116.

3. Health Fact of the week:  A recent survey of high school students
found that more than 1 in 12 students had made a suicide attempt in
the past year.  If you or someone you know is experiencing feelings
of depression or thoughts of suicide, come talk to a counselor in the
Health center. Brought to you by the BHS Health Center Youth Advisory
Board.

4. Applications for the California Scholarships Federation are now
available in the College Career Center!  The completed application
and $1 membership fee are due by Monday, October 30th in the college
Center.  If you have any questions, please contact Natalie Gaber at

Sports

*1. Interested in Mountain Bike Riding and racing?  If so, come to
H301 at lunch this Thursday (10/19) to learn about the BHS Mountain
Bike Club. Parents of interested are encouraged to attend a meeting
at 6;30 pm on Wednesday, October 25 in H301.

2. Boys' Lacrosse Meeting: All students interested in playing on the
boys' lacrosse team this season (junior varsity and varsity) should
come to a pre-season meeting Thursday, October 19th after school at
3:20 pm at the turf bleachers.

3. You can still join the crew team, learn how to row, get into great
and participate in a national champion level team.  You just need
enthusiasm, because no previous experience is necessary. To learn

4. Attention all students who intend to try out for Soccer,
Basketball, or Wrestling:  tryouts begin on Monday, November 6th. You
must have a complete athletic packet with a valid physical ready to
turn in to your coach on the first day of tryouts.  Packets are
available in front office or in the athletic office.  If you haven't
had a physical in the last year, you must schedule one immediately
with your doctor or at the BHS Health center!

5. Potential Basketball Players--you must have a physical in order to
try out for the team.  Try-outs will begin November 6th.


Senior / Junior Section

*1. This weekend - free SAT subject test prep class taught by Cal
students. Saturday, October 21, 2-5 pm, Math 2; Sunday, October 22,
10am - 1pm, US History.  Both classes at UC Berkeley Dwinelle Hall,
Room 250.  Sponsored by PTPS (http://www.ptps.org)

2. Bay Area Travel Writers Travel Writing Contest: open to bay Area
high school students.  Students must submit a 500 word essay
concerning a travel destination, experience of activity.  Travel
essays concern the idea and experience of travel-whether the writer
has traveled to the other side of the world, down the block or
anywhere in between.  Postmark deadline: October 31.  $200 first
prize.  Most information available in D221.

3. Seniors!  The Last day to take Senior portraits and have your
picture in the yearbook is October 28th.  Call ABC Harrell or go to
their website to make your appointment.

4. Senior weekend and baby pictures are due October 27th.  Please put
them in a self addressed stamped envelope with your name on the back.
High resolution CD are accepted.  Please turn in to the main office.

5. College visits to Berkeley High--Seniors: Sign up in D221 to
attend college presentations. You must also pick up an authorization
form for your teacher to sign so that you may miss class.

1. Spirit of Berkeley High - Celebrity Showdown Weekend Benefit
Friday, November 10: Berkeley Community Theater 8 PM MTV's Wild 'N
Out Cast hosted by T.K. Carter featuring Spanky Hayes, Shorty Short,
Dee Ray and Corey Holcomb Special Pre Sell BHS Student tickets, floor
seating, $25.00 Purchase at BHS Athletic Director office today after
school, Wednesday October 18 through Friday, October 20 at lunch and
after school. Bring your student IDs.

Sat. November 11:  BHS Football games and Celebrity Basketball BHS JV
and Varsity Football against El Cerrito, 11 am and 1 pm Celebrity
Basketball Event 7 pm, Donahue Gym BHS Alumni against BHS Varsity
Celebrities against BHS JV.  More details to follow on the Saturday
event.

2. Vagina, yes I said it!  "The Vagina Monologues" are back!  Come to
an informational meeting at lunch on Wednesday, October 18th in room
C224 to find out more.  All women and friendly men are welcome.

Sales

1. Due to rising costs, yearbook prices will be increased.  A $65.00
early bird special will only last through Spirit Week.  Prices will
go up to $75.00 until November, Thanksgiving holiday and then will be
set at $80.00.  Financial Assistance is available to those who
qualify--see Mr. Knight during 7th in H102 to apply.

2. Yearbooks photographers: Bring your cameras back to H102 this week
and pick up a new one.  We need your photos for our November
deadline.

3. Letter jacket sales go on every lunch and immediately after school
during the first week of October.  Jackets are available for sizing.
Letters and insignias may be purchased directly from the athletic
office.  Anyone may purchase a jacket, but you must have earned an
athletic letter in order to purchase one.  Jackets are available in
red w/ cream or black w/ black sleeves.  Price includes your name and
all insignias sewn in. Approximate cost is $170 per jacket.
