SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  INVECTIVE - harsh words.  After the careless
driver crashed into the side of my new car, I greeted him with an
unprintable hail of invective.  

JOB INFORMATION
*Albany Physical Therapy is looking for a student to work
approximately six hours per week (two hours per day, Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday) to help with office responsibilities.  They offer flexible
hours and job training. Wages:  $6.75 per hour.  For more

Looking for a job?  Berkeley Public Library is hiring 5 student
workers. These jobs involve assisting Teen Services librarians in a
variety of tasks and working with library materials. The application
period ends on Sept 30, 2006. Pick up and return the completed
applications to the 2nd floor Reference Desk at the Central Library.
You must be at least 16 years old. Successful applicants can expect

SCORE! in Albany is seeking Advantage Coaches to join our team and
help us fulfill our mission. SCORE! helps children of all learning
levels, K-10, make academic progress in a fun and motivating
environment.  SCORE! Advantage Coaches: Serve as academic role
models, explain math, reading and supplemental subject concepts
clearly while encouraging students to build confidence.  The
Requirements are: being an excellent role model, 3.0 GPA or higher,
completion of Algebra II math course, strong aptitude and enthusiasm
for working with children, weekday and/or weekend availability, 10 or

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
Teen volunteers are needed to assist with Youth Group for teens with
disabilities, ages 12-21.  Volunteers without disabilities are
"buddies" to assist with hands-on activities and shared experiences.
Friday evenings, 6:30-9:00 pm, Francis Albrier Recreation Center, San
Pablo Park, 2800 Park St, near Oregon off Sacramento.  Dates are:

Saturday, September 30 from 8:30 to 1:00 at UC Berkeley Wheeler Hall.
Over 60 public and private college and university representatives
will be available to speak with you about their colleges.  You can
pre-register at www.eastbayconsortium.org at no cost.  This is a
great opportunity for all students to find out more about many
colleges from around the country.  

PSAT - many of you have inquired about the PSAT.  It will be offered
at Berkeley High on Saturday, October 21 at 8:00 am.  Students will
be able to register at Berkeley High.  We will post more information
as it becomes available.

draft?  Essay readers will be available in D221 starting September 11
on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at lunchtime only.  We are
starting with one reader and will expand times and number of readers
the week of September 25.

22rd for Regular Decision.  You do NOT need to fill these out if you
are applying only to the UC's, Cal State Universities or community
colleges.

also pick up an authorization form for your teacher to sign so that
you may miss his or her class.  This is a great opportunity to find

SAT/ACT TEST DATES - TODAY, September 20 is the late registration
deadline for the October 14 SAT and SAT subject tests.  Register at
www.collegeboard.com.  September 22 is the regular registration
deadline for the October 28 ACT test.  Register at www.act.org.  

Students can choose whether or not to take the optional writing
section on the ACT.  Go to www.actstudent.org/writing for a list of
colleges that have provided information about their policy on the
writing section.

SCHOLARSHIPS
High school seniors who are exceptional in the arts are encouraged to
apply for the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts'
renowned Arts Recognition and Talent Search, which awards
scholarships of up to $10,000. The program rewards students
nationwide in various categories: dance, film and video, classical,
pop and jazz, photography, theater, visual arts, voice and writing.
Participating students receive scholarships ranging from $500 to
$10,000. The registration deadline is Oct. 2 and the deadline to
submit audition and portfolio materials is Nov. 1. Students can

SunTrust Off to College Scholarship Sweepstakes - $1,000 scholarship

Horatio Alger Association - Open to seniors graduating in 2007 who
plan to start college in the fall with gross family income under
$50,000 and a minimum GPA of 2.0.  Must be a US citizen or permanent
resident.  Scholarships range from $1000 to $20,000.  Apply at
