SAT WORD OF THE DAY: PAINSTAKING – showing great care and patience

JOB INFORMATION
Reliable, conscientious student needed to help with filing and other
office work in a small law office in Emeryville, 8-10 hours per week,
preferably working two days per week. $10 per hour. For more

Nanny/college/high school student wanted to help with after school care
for our 9 year old son. Duties include picking him up from school,
helping him get started on his homework and taking him to soccer
practice two days per week. Drivers license required, car preferred,
but we have a car available if necessary. Salary $12 per hour
(negotiable for the right person). Hours are M-F, 5-7, two days pick up

A student from Saudi Arabia, taking UC classes, is looking for a tutor
to help him with his English and practice conversation with him. He
would like tutoring about twice per week and is willing to pay about

FREE SAT PREP CLASS – People’s Test Preparation Service is offering a
free class to BHS students. Class will be held on Tuesdays and
Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 in Room H206. One day will focus on the
Critical Reading section and the other day will focus on math. The
first class will be on Wednesday, September 20. No sign-up is
necessary.
FOR SENIORS
Do you need help feedback on your Senior Profile or college essay
draft? Essay readers will be available in D221 starting September 11
on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at lunchtime only. We are
starting with one reader and will expand times and number of readers
the week of September 25.
If you are applying Early Decision or Early Action, come to one of the
following workshops:

September 22, 7:30 am – College/Career Center
SENIOR PARENT COLLEGE INFORMATION SESSION – Wednesday, September 13,
6:30 pm in the Berkeley High School library. I will be presenting
detailed information on the college application process. Please come by
to get all of your questions answered. I look forward to seeing you.
SENIORS: We will be speaking to your English classes beginning on
September 11th and setting up individual appointments after the class
presentations are completed. Until then, you may stop by at lunch or
after school to get your questions answered.
REMINDER: If you are applying to private colleges which need a
counselor recommendation, your Senior Profiles are due on September
22rd for Regular Decision. You do NOT need to fill these out if you
are applying only to the UC’s, Cal State Universities or community
colleges.

SENIORS: Sign up in D221 to attend college presentations. You must
also pick up an authorization form for your teacher to sign so that you
may miss his or her class. This is a great opportunity to find out
more about individual colleges as well as meet one of the people who
may be reading your college application. Pick up a complete list in
D221.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – TODAY, Tuesday, September 12 is the regular
registration deadline for the October 14 SAT and SAT subject tests.
Register at www.collegeboard.com. September 22 is the regular
registration deadline for the October 28 ACT test. Register at
www.act.org.
Students can choose whether or not to take the optional writing section
on the ACT. Go to www.actstudent.org/writing for a list of colleges
that have provided information about their policy on the writing
section.

SCHOLARSHIPS
AXA Achievement Scholarship – Open to current seniors who are U.S.
citizens or permanent residents who are planning to enroll in a two or
four year college in the fall and have shown outstanding achievement in
school, the community or workplace. Scholarships range from $10,000 to
$25,000. Deadline: December 15.
Sinkler Miller Medical Association Scholarship – open to African
American residents of the San Francisco Bay Area graduating in 2007
with a minimum GPA of 3.0 with financial need. Scholarships range from
$1,000 to $5,000. Applications available in D221. Deadline: September
15.
Horatio Alger Association – Open to seniors graduating in 2007 who plan
to start college in the fall with gross family income under $50,000 and
a minimum GPA of 2.0. Must be a US citizen or permanent resident.
Scholarships range from $1000 to $20,000. Apply at
www.horatioalger.org/scholarships. Deadline: October 30.

COLLEGE INFORMATION DAY
Saturday, September 30 from 8:30 to 1:00 at UC Berkeley Wheeler Hall.
Over 60 public and private college and university representatives will
be available to speak with you about their colleges. You can
pre-register at www.eastbayconsortium.org at no cost. This is a great
opportunity for all students to find out more about many colleges from
around the country.
JESUIT COLLEGE FAIR – Thursday, September 14, 7:00-9:00 pm, St.
Ignatius College Prep, 2001-37th Avenue, San Francisco.
Representatives from 17 Jesuit colleges will be present to talk with
you and provide information. These include: Fordham University,
Loyola Marymount, Loyola University Chicago, Santa Clara University,
Seattle University, and many more.
PSAT – many of you have inquired about the PSAT. It will be offered at
Berkeley High on Saturday, October 21. Students will be able to
register at Berkeley High. We will post more information as it becomes
available.
