SAT WORD OF THE DAY: COMMENCEMENT - a beginning, a start; a ceremony
at which academic degrees or diplomas are conferred. Although many
people think of commencement as the end of high school, it is also
the commencement of a new part of life.

For a wonderful article by Steve Jobs on why it's important to do
what you love and some advice on how to get there, go to
http://news-service.stanford.edu/news/2005/june15/jobs-061505.
Adults, share it with your students, and students, share it with the
significant adults in your lives.

An excellent book to read over the summer is College Unranked:
Affirming Educational Values in College Admissions by Lloyd Thacker.
Mr. Thacker is leading a campaign to end the commercialism in college
admissions and to focus instead on the educational and social needs
of students. In my view, his is a voice of sanity and caring which
is sorely needed.

The College/Career Center will be closed after today for the summer.

I will be checking my e-mail during the summer. If problems or
concerns arise, please feel free to contact me at
iabrams at berkeley.k12.ca.us. I will not be checking my e-mail when I
am out of town.

Ms. Harris, Mr. Stringfellow and I wish you all a safe, relaxing and
fun vacation. Congratulations to all of our graduates. Please keep
in touch as I would love to hear how you are doing. We look forward
to seeing everyone else in the fall.
