April 2006

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Berkeley High School students are currently choosing their classes
and programs for next year. Students have visited the computer lab
together with their English teachers where counselors have guided
them in making course selections. As a part of this process,
students have also ranked their requests for small schools and
programs. The printout in this envelope indicates your student's
selections. It is helpful for us to have you list alternates at the
bottom of this form, in case a class that your student has requested
is not going to be offered. If you would like to give us some
alternate choices, please list them and have your student return this
form to the counseling office. Your student will also be able to
return to the computer lab to make corrections if needed once all of
our students are done entering their classes in the computer lab.
Please make sure that the classes that you and your student select
are correct because there will be few, if any, changes made next
year. The primary exceptions will be as a result of classes failed
this semester or classes passed during summer school.

Please note that Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors classes require
considerably more work and studying time than regular classes. Talk
to your student about how many AP or Honors classes will be a
reasonable amount for her/him to take because there will be no
changes next year and they will be required to remain in all
AP/Honors classes they sign up for.

Enclosed as well is your student's transcript. It summarizes the
classes taken and grades earned throughout her/his time at Berkeley
High School. Please note that if your student has attended high
school somewhere in addition to Berkeley High School, credits from
that school may not yet have been added to the Berkeley High School
transcript.

In order to determine your student's total high school credits,
please add up the credits completed from each semester. To be
on-track for graduation, at the end of the fall semester of this
year, a freshman should have completed a minimum of 25 credits, a
sophomore should have completed a minimum of 80 credits, and a junior
should have completed a minimum of 135 credits thus far.

Along with classes completed thus far, we have included the current
schedule so that you can see which courses she/he is in the process
of completing. Additionally, we have enclosed a chart outlining both
the Berkeley High School graduation requirements and the UC/CSU
eligibility requirements. By comparing these requirements to the
classes your student has completed, you will be able to follow
her/his progress toward graduation and college. Please note that
while grades of D do give credit toward Berkeley High School
graduation, colleges do not accept D's or F's in meeting their
admissions requirements.

If you have any questions or concerns about your student's transcript
or about his/her selections, please contact your student's counselor.

Sincerely,

Jim Slemp, Principal
