Serious Fantasy/Science Fiction Book Club:
Teens invited to critically explore favorite genres
Berkeley Public Library's Teen Services invites teens to join a book
club which honors and critically examines contemporary and classic
titles in these genres. In the tradition of famed writers J. R. R.
Tolkien and C. S. Lewis (members of the historic Inklings writing
group in Oxford, England), the group will meet weekly on Thursdays
from 4 to 5:30 over tea and scones to talk about authors as diverse
as Octavia Butler, Salman Rushdie and Ray Bradbury. The club meets
at the Claremont Branch Library, 2940 Benvenue (at Ashby). The first
meeting on April 20 will discuss wordplay in fantasy, comparing
Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth and Salman Rushdie's Haroun and
the Sea of Stories. We'll also distribute free copies of the science
fiction classic Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. On April 27,
we'll discuss stereotypes and realities of fantasy writing. May 4
will be a comparison of Poul Anderson's the Broken Sword and J. R. R.
Tolkien's Ring trilogy. May 11 attendees will have the chance to
name their personal Fahrenheit 451 science fiction title. On May 18,
author Peter Beagle visits. May 25's topic will be a discussion of
Parable of the Sower. All teens are welcome, and teens who attend
these meetings will have a chance to select titles for the next round
of discussion.
