STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN
March 20, 2006
Administration
1. BSEP Meeting is TODOAY, March 20, 4:30 pm - until late evening.
Agenda as
follows: Establish a quorum; introductions; approval of agenda and
changes; review and approval of minutes of previous meetings; public
comment; order dinner; survey update/evaluation; Finish first review of
all proposals; Discussion and voting; Procedure; Straw poll; future
meeting dates review.
2. Greetings BHS staff: Coordinated School Health Council meets
Wednesday
at 3:30 pm, 3/22/06 in Conference Room B. We invite you to be part of
an
innovative collaborative effort. All are welcome. Food and Beverages
served. For more information, contact Shannon Banks in G202B.
3. If you received a letter in the mail saying that you need to take one
or both parts of the California State Exit Exam, you must report to the
Jacket Gym at 7:30 am on Tuesday, March 21, for the English Language
Arts
Exam; and on Wednesday, March 22, for the Math Exam. Please make sure
to
bring a book in case you finish early. If you are not certain whether
you
need to take one or both parts of the exam, please talk to Rory Bled,
Vice
Principal.
4. Attention CSF Participants! The tutoring requirement for the spring
2006 semester only has been changed from 3 to 4 hours.
5. The dates for the Honors Algebra 2 and Honors Math Analysis tests are
April 3rd and April 5th from 3:30 – 4:15 pm in H306. Please contact Mr.
Weitz via email at <mweitz at berkeley.k12.ca.us> to sign up for the test.
Ask your current math
teacher for more information.
6. Are you planning on taking an Advanced Placement AP course next year?
If so, you must come to a lunchtime informational meeting Friday to hear
important course information and pick up an informational packet.
AP Biology will be in G212, AP Chemistry will be in G215, AP Physics
will
be in G217, and AP Environmental science will be in G209.
7. Do you like Science? Do you want a paid summer internship at a
biotech
company like Bayer and Chiron? Do you like working with hi-tech
equipment? If you’re a sophomore, apply for the Biotech Academy. Pick
up
an application from Mr. Fong in G305 or Dr. Stone in G304. Applications
are still available and due back early next week.
8. Student Government applications are now available in Ms.
McKnight-Johnson’s office D148 in the main office, and in the SLC. Pick
up one today!
9. The MORP (Prom backwards) is re-scheduled for March 31st from 6:30-10
pm in the BHS Food Court. If you already have purchased tickets, you
will
be added to the guest list. All others can still purchase tickets on
Monday at the Allston Way box office at lunch and after school.
Tickets
are $5 per person. Special Guest Artist will be performing! See you
there!
10. JOBS: Recreation Activity Leader- Call the City of Berkeley Parks
and
Recreation at 981-5150. $13.76 per hour to start. Deadline to apply:
April 21st. Other aquatic positions are available as well.
11. Berkeley Public Library’s Teen Services invite teen readers to come
out and discuss the “Coldest Winter Ever” by Sister Souljah, at the
SOUTH
BRANCH LIBRARY, 1901 Russell St. For information call 981-6106.

12. VOLUNTEER- Camp Galileo has opportunities for counselors in training
and summer interns at a camp for elementary school age students. You
can
help campers with art, science and outdoor activities or develop kids
enjoyment of science and engineering. For more information go to [

Clubs
1. Seniors! Seniors! Are you interested in Asia Graduation. If so,
please come to see to the informational meeting tonight, March 20th in
room C333. Anyone can come!
2. Health Fact of the week: Congratulations to our BHS Lady Jackets on
the
success of this season! Did you know that more than 1 million serious
sports-related injuries occur annually to adolescents aged 10-17? (CDC,
2004). Stay active, but stay safe! Brought to you by the BHS Health
Center Youth Advisory Board.
Sports
1. Congratulations to the BHS Mountain Bike Team for taking 2nd overall
Race #2 of the NorCal High School Mountain Bike Race Series held March
12!
Andy Goessling (junior) won the Varsity boy’s race while Traci Kroll
(sophomore) and Rebecca Rogers (junior) took second in the frosh/soph
and
junior varsity races, respectively!
Senior / Junior Section
3. SENIORS: Claude Clark Memorial scholarship Fund- This scholarship
is for African and African American seniors graduating from Bay Area
High
Schools. Three $3,000 scholarships will be awarded. Deadline: April 15.
4. JUNIORS: The next day to sign up for an appointment with either Ms.
Abrams or Mr. Stringfellow is FRIDAY, MARCH 24 at 8:00 am in D221.You
may
not sign up if you already had an appointment with either Ms. Abrams or
Mr. Stringfellow or if you signed up for an appointment and missed it.
The date was changed due to the exit exam on March 21st.
5. East Bay Consortium of Educational Institutions Scholarship: Thirty
$2,500 scholarships will be awarded for students attending four year
college, nineteen $1,000 scholarships for students attending community
colleges. Must be a graduating senior who will be attending a four year
accredited college or university, or a community college or a
vocational/technical school. Students must have a minimum 2.0 if
attending a community college or vocational school, active participation
in extracurricular activities and financial need. Applications
available
in D221. Deadline: April 21.
6. Tzu Chi foundation Scholarship- Seniors are selected based on
financial
need, academic achievement and community involvement. Minimum
unweighted
GPA of 3.0 $1,000 scholarship. Deadline: March 31st.
Events/ Performance
1. TODAY during lunch, we will be having a brief service and tree
planting
honoring Jennifer Dieges, a dedicated and passionate teacher who taught
here. She passed away on March 19th, 2005 to cancer. Please join us in
the courtyard in front of G and H building at the beginning of lunch.
2. In January of 2006, six CAS students, one CAS alumna, and teacher
Rick
Ayers traveled to Venezuela to attend the sixth World Social Forum. We
met activists from all over the world and we experienced the dramatic
transformations of the Bavarian revolution led by President Hugo Chavez.
Please attend our REPORT BACK gathering at BHS. You will see
photographs,
videos, personal reminiscences by all the participants.
4. Attention Juniors! Junior Prom ticket sales will resume Tuesday,
March
21st at lunch in the Allston Way Box office. Ticket sales are Tuesday,
Wednesday, and Thursday of every week at lunch. Tickets will start at
$60.00 each and will go up $5 each week with a maximum ticket price of
$75.00 per ticket. Remember! Prom is April 29th.
5. Come learn about Advanced Theatre Projects 2006-2007. Next year
we’ll
be doing two fall plays and many other projects. Auditions are next
week-
find out how to prepare this Friday at lunch in the drama room.
SALES
1. BART tickets for March are here. Please pick up your tickets in
D224 at lunchtime only.
2. BART ticket orders will be taken March 30, and 31st at lunchtime in
room D224. Price per ticket is $16.00
3. Yearbooks are on sale in H102 everyday at lunch and after school.
They
are $70 dollars. Make checks payable to BHS yearbooks.
