College Advisor's Bulletin

SAT WORD OF THE DAY: CHARLATAN - a deceiver; a fraud; a quack.  When
he tried to amputate my leg to cure my ingrown toenail, I suspected
that the doctor was a charlatan.

JUNIORS - IMPORTANT DATE CHANGE - The next day to sign up for an
appointment with either Ms. Abrams or Mr. Stringfellow is FRIDAY,
MARCH 24 at 8:00 a.m. in D221.  You may not sign up if you already had
an appointment with either Ms. Abrams or Mr. Stringfellow or if you
signed up for an appointment and missed it.  The date was changed due
to the exit exam on March 21.
 
Ms. Abrams will be away from school on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
this week at a career training workshop.  If you have questions or
concerns, you may see Ms. Harris in the College Center on Wednesday
and Thursday and Mr. Stringfellow on Friday.  There will be no College
Advisor's Bulletin on Thursday and Friday.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
*Camp Galileo has opportunities for counselors in training and summer
interns at a camp for elementary school age students.   You can help
campers with art, science and outdoor activities or develop kids'
enjoyment of science and engineering.  For more information and to

JOB OPPORTUNITY FOR GRADUATING SENIOR
*Disney Career Start Program - work at one of the Walt Disney World
theme parks or resorts.  Participants are paid $6.40 an hour and
typically work 30-45 hours a week.  For more information, attend the
presentation on March 28 at 6:00 p.m. at San Francisco State
University, Towers Conference Center-Richmond at State Dr. and Lake

SCHOLARSHIPS
Claude Clark Memorial Scholarship Fund - This scholarship is for
African and African-American seniors graduating from Bay Area high
schools.  Three $3,000 scholarships will be awarded.  Deadline:  April
15.

East Bay Consortium of Educational Institutions Scholarship - Thirty
$2,500 scholarships will be awarded for students attending four year
college, nineteen $1,000 scholarships for students attending community
colleges and six $1,000 scholarships for students attending community
colleges. Must be a graduating senior who will be attending a four
year accredited college or university, or a community college or a
vocational/technical school.  Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.8
if attending a four year school or a minimum 2.0 if attending a
community college or vocational school, active participation in
extracurricular activities and financial need.  Applications available
in D221. Deadline:  April 21. 

Tzu Chi Foundation Scholarship - Seniors are selected based on
financial need, academic achievement and community involvement.
Minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0. $1,000 scholarship.  Deadline:  March
31.   

Meleia Willis-Starbuck Memorial Scholarship For Social Justice -
Graduating Berkeley High senior who plans to attend two or four year
college next year who has participated in work to further the cause of
social justice, has financial need and a minimum GPA of 2.5.
Applications available in D221.  Received Deadline:  March 30 at 4:00
p.m. in D221.

Oakland Association of Insurance Agents - $5,000 scholarship,
renewable for three additional years, to graduating senior with a
minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 who has participated in community
service and has financial need.  Applications available in D221.
Deadline: March 31.

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
SAT/ACT TEST DATES - March 17 is the late registration deadline for
the April 8 ACT.  April 3 is the regular registration deadline for the
May 6 SAT.  Students may register for the SAT at www.collegeboard.com
or for the ACT at www.act.org.  There are also paper registration
applications for both tests available in D221.  

ALL STUDENTS
Science Fiction and Fantasy Contest - sponsored by LA con IV, the 64th
World Science Fiction Convention and Baltimore Worldcon 1998.
Students enter a short story with a science fiction or fantasy theme,
original artwork with a science fiction or fantasy theme or a science
essay.  Complete rules and application available in D221.  Deadline:
March 31.
