SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  BLIGHT - AIDS is a blight on the American
population that has taken a severe toll on many families and
communities.  

FREE SAT TEST PREP - Classes will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays
from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in G211 beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, March
1. One day will be prep for the critical reading section, the other
for the math section of the SAT. Sign up in D221 if you would like to
take the class.

JUNIOR PARENTS - If you missed the junior parent college meeting on
February 7 and want to see the video, e-mail me and I will put you on
the list.  You may borrow it for up to two nights.  

*Students of Color Health Careers Conference - If you are a student
of color currently enrolled in a local high school and interested in
a career in health care, come to this free conference to get
information on career choices, financial aid, academic survival
techniques and more.   Saturday, March 11, 9:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the
Clark Kerr Campus of UC Berkeley.  Registration forms available in
D221.

URGENT - REMINDER - THURSDAY, MARCH 2 IS THE LAST DAY TO SUBMIT YOUR
FAFSA TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR FINANCIAL AID FOR THE UC'S, CAL STATES,
COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND FOR A CAL GRANT.  YOU MUST ALSO SUBMIT A CAL
GRANT INFORMATION RELEASE FORM BY MARCH 1ST.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Meleia Willis-Starbuck Memorial Scholarship For Social Justice -
Graduating senior who plans to attend two or four year college next
year who has participated in work to further the cause of social
justice, has financial need and a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Applications
available in D221.  Received Deadline:  March 30 at 4:00 p.m. in
D221.

Oakland Association of Insurance Agents - $5,000 scholarship,
renewable for three additional years, to graduating senior with a
minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 who has participated in community
service and has financial need.  Applications available in D221.
Deadline: March 31.

Thurgood Marshall Scholarships - 2,000 merit scholarships awarded
through 47 different Historically Black Colleges & Universities, each
with their own criteria and their own application.  High school GPA
minimum of 3.0 and a minimum combined critical reading/math score of
1100 with financial need.  For more information and a list of
schools, go to www.thurgoodmarshallfund.org.  

Berkeley Rotary Scholarship - Senior with financial need, academic
potential, and involved in extracurricular activities.  Applications
available in D221.  Awards:  Up to $5,000, renewable for four years.
Deadline:  March 16 (received date).  

Sigma Pi Alpha Sorority Scholarship - Female senior of Chicana/Latina
background with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who plans to attend a two or
four year institution after graduation and has financial need. U.S.
Citizenship or permanent residency is NOT a requirement. Applications
available in D221. $250 scholarship. Deadline:  April 1.

Richard S. Navies Scholarship - Seniors who are U.S. citizens or
legal residents, graduating from a Bay Area high school with a
minimum GPA of 2.5 who haves been a varsity athlete for at least two
years.  Students should also have volunteered in school or community
organizations. Award:  $2,500. Deadline:  March 17.

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
SAT/ACT TEST DATES - March 3 is the regular registration deadline for
the April 8 ACT.  March 8 is the late registration deadline for the
April 1 SAT.   

ALL STUDENTS
Science Fiction and Fantasy Contest - sponsored by LA con IV, the
64th World Science Fiction Convention and Baltimore Worldcon 1998.
Students enter a short story with a science fiction or fantasy theme,
original artwork with a science fiction or fantasy theme or a science
essay.  Complete rules and application available in D221.  Deadline:
March 31.  

SUMMER PROGRAMS
Lawrence Hall of Science is sponsoring two residential research camps
for students in grades 9-12.  Wildlife Biology Research Camp at
Sagehen Research Station, July 30-August 4.  Marine Biology Research
Camp at Bodega Marine Lab, June 17-22.  Applications available in
