Serious Fantasy/Science Fiction Book Club:

Teens invited to critically discuss popular genres

Berkeley Public Library's Teen Services invite teen readers to come
and discuss classic and contemporary science fiction and fantasy
titles, at the Claremont Branch Library, 2940 Benvenue (at Ashby).
To honor J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, famous authors in these
genres and members of the Inklings writing group of Oxford, England,
the group will meet at tea-time and enjoy good discussion over tea
and scones.

On Thursday, March 2, the group will discuss L. Frank Baum's Oz books
as political allegory, and debate the distinctions between science
fiction and fantasy. We will also distribute free copies of a
classic William Morris fantasy novel, The Wood Beyond The World. On
Thursday, March 16, we'll discuss the Morris novel. The group's last
meeting on Thursday, March 30 will switch genres to discuss Douglas
Adam's The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, and pick titles and
topics for the next series of gatherings. All meetings run from 4:00
to 5:30 p.m.
