Administration

1.	The BHS BSEP committee funds of all types of student enrichment
programs with money provided by the BSEP Tax Measure of 1994.  BSEP
program proposal application forms are now available for the fall 2006.
You can pick them up from Belinda McDaniel in the Admin office or call 
her
at 644-4800.  The forms can also be sent electronically.

2.	Writer’s Cafe is back.  Wednesdays and Thursdays at lunch in A101.
Don’t wait until you’re over your head.  Work with a coach on your 
essays
and stories.  Snacks available.

3.	Auditions for the Berkeley High School Jazz Lab Band II (intermediate
level) for fall 2006 will be held in A 201 Tuesday,
February  21st at 3:15 p.m. (saxophone, rhythm section, piano, guitar,
trumpet) and Thursday, February 23rd at 3:15 (trombone).  Questions?

4.	King Middle School After-school ELL Tutorial is looking for Spanish
bilingual tutors who can work from 3-4, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 
and
from 2:15 – 3:15 on Wednesday.  We’ll also hire monolingual English
speaking tutors who want to patiently work with middle school students.
You must be in the 11th or 12th grade and able to get to King on time.
Pay: $9.00 / hour.  Come to the Science room 7 and ask for Patricia
Rathwell  or Mrs. Hamai.  You may also call 644-4811.

5.	The pasta shop is looking for seniors to work on weekends at 1786
Fourth Street in Berkeley.  Pick up an application at the store and ask
for Porsche.  Salary: $8.50 per hour.  For more information go to

Clubs
1.	Come this Thursday at lunch for the 1st meeting of the Italian Club 
in
C102.  Venite A Mangiare.

2.	The Reach Out and Read Club is having a book drive!  Reading at a 
young
age is important and we can help!  Donations will be given to Children’s
Hospital Oakland to be read and distributed to children when they visit.
 From February 15th through March 15th please bring in any picture books,
children’s books, or teen books to your 2nd period class.  The class 
with
the most books at the end of the month will win a pizza party!

3.	HIV and AIDS are a serious matter.  In 2003, an estimated 7,081 young
people were living with AIDS, a 37% increase since 1999.  Stop the 
spread
of this devastating disease.  Respect yourself.  Protect yourself.  Get
HIV tested at the BHS Health center today.  It’s just a cotton swab 
saliva
test, and it’s free and confidential.  Brought to you by the BHS Youth
Advisory Board.

Sports
None

Senior / Junior Section
1.	Seniors!  It’s time to purchase your Senior Page.  A single page is
$200 and a double page is $400.  Come by the Yearbook room H102
afterschool!  The deadline to purchase is February 24th.  Limited amount
of pages, so hurry!

2.	UPCOMING Presentations: All presentations in D221.  Sign up in D221 
and
get an authorization form for your teacher to sign prior to the
presentation.
February 16
10:30     AYUSA – Have you ever thought about studying abroad while 
still
in high school?  It’s wonderful way to immerse yourself in another
culture, dramatically improve your foreign language skills, become more
independent, have fun, and make yourself more competitive for the work
market.  AYUSA Study abroad is making it easy for you to study abroad by
offering partial scholarships to study in countries like Spain, England,
Frances, Germany, Costa Rica and more!

3.	FAFSA Workshops: Bring your financial information and your questions.
Trained assistants from UC Berkeley will be available to help you fill 
out
the financial aid forms.  All workshops are in the Berkeley High School
library computer lab:

       Tuesday, February 21, 3:30 p.m.

4.	For seniors- Want to be a chef?  Would you like to work in a hotel
management?  The Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Program of 
City
College of San Francisco is now accepting applications for Fall 2006.  
For

Application deadline: April 10.

5.	Scholarships- Richard S. Navies Scholarship-seniors who are US 
citizens
or legal residents, graduating from a Bay Area High School with a 
minimum
GPA of 2.5 who haves been a varsity athlete for at least two years.
Students should also have volunteered in school or community
organizations.  Award: $2,500 or deadline: March 17.

6.	Sigma Pi Alpha Scholarship- Female senior of Chicano/ Latina 
background
with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who plans to attend a two or four year
institution after graduation and has financial need.  US citizenship or
permanent residency is NOT a requirement.  Application available in 
D221.
$250 scholarship.  Deadline: April 1.

7.	Ligurians in the World Association – A graduating senior who has at
least one parent of Italian descent $1,000 scholarship.  Application
available in D221.  Deadline: April 15.

8.	For Juniors-KRON 4 Students Rising Above Scholarship.  This is a
scholarship for students who will graduate from high school and then
attend college in 2007.  Students must be from low income families who 
are
rising above great difficulties and succeeding in school and in life.
Applications are available in D221.  Applications must be received by 
KRON
by Tuesday, April 4.

9.	California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) 
is
now accepting applications.  COSMOS is now enrolling students at four
sites-UC Davis, Irvine, San Diego and Santa Cruz.  Tuition, room and 
board
is $2,000, but FULL SCHOLARSHIPS are available for qualified students.
The COSMOS course clusters address topics not traditionally taught in 
high
schools such as astronomy, aerospace engineering, biomedical sciences,
computer science, wetlands ecology, ocean science, robotics, game 
theory,
and more.  The program runs from July 9 – August 5.  Apply at

Deadline is March 16 at 5:00 p.m..

10.	Anita Baskerville Harris Scholarship Award – Graduating
African-American female with a minimum GPA of 3.0 with financial need 
who
is planning to attend a four year college or university.  Scholarships
range from $500 to $2,000.  Deadline: April 1.

Events/ Performance
1.	Don’t forget BHS Poetry Slam, Wednesday, February 22nd at 7:00 p.m. 
in the
library.  New location…  $1 to get in.  Poets sign up at 6:30 pm.  
Judges
are taken from the audience.  We go through one round of 20 poets, and
then the top 3 to 5 contestants go to a second round.

2.	Wanted: Readers!  Sign up to participate in the California Young 
Reader
Medal event at the Berkeley Public Library.  Come to the Berkeley High
Library to get a flyer of how to participate.

3.	Come see the 11th Annual Independent Theater Projects! ITPs is
completely student run theater group based at Berkeley High.  Every 
year,
ITPs puts on a night of theater that dares to push the envelope and go
where traditional high school drama fears to tread.  Over the years, 
ITPS
has garnered a reputation of professionalism and excellence and this 
year
is no exception of professionalism and excellence and this year is no
exception.  Come support your talented friends and classmates.

4.	In celebration of African American History Month come hear two
renowned celebrities in the Berkeley High Library Wednesday, February 
22,
at 7 pm.  MOORIE TURNER, creator of Wee Pals, the first syndicated 
multi-ethnic cartoon,
graduated from Berkeley High and makes his home here.
KAREN MCKIE, storyteller extraordinaire, has been an active participant 
in
the Berkeley High School community.  This event is jointly sponsored by
the African American Studies department, the Black Student Union and
Berkeley High Library.  Bring the whole family!

SALES
1.	BART Tickets are here!  Please pick them up in D224.  See Irma Parker
for more information.

2.	The last round of Letter Jacket sales is this Thursday at lunch and
after school at the Athletic Office. Order forms are available in the
athletic office for either the red/cream or black/black jacket.  Price 
is
$160 and includes embroidery of your name and sewing on all athletic 
awards.
Additional embroidery is extra.  Bring your letter awards or purchase 
them
separately from the athletic department and be prepared to make a check
out to NEFF.  Jackets will be shipped 6-8 weeks after the order is 
placed.

3.	Yearbooks are on sale in H102 everyday at lunch and after school.  
They
are $70 dollars.  Make checks payable to BHS yearbooks.
