Administration

1.	BSEP application forms are now available for the fall 2006.  You can 
pick them up  from Belinda McDaniel in the Admin. office or call her at 
644-4800.  The forms can also be sent electronically.

2.	The College/Career Center, D221, will be closed for ninth grade 
ILP's during the following days and times:  Only proctors assigned to 
the College Center and students who have appointments with Ms. Abrams 
or Mr. Stringfellow may come during these times.  The College Center 
will be open every day at lunch and after sixth period.
Monday, February 13, periods 3 through 6
Tuesday, February 14, periods 2 through 3 and periods 5 through 6
Wednesday, February 15, periods 1 through 3 and period 5
Thursday, February 16, periods 1 through 2, period 4 and period 6
Tuesday, February 21, all day

Only proctors assigned to the College Center and students who have 
appointments with Ms. Abrams or Mr. Stringfellow may come during these 
times.  The College Center will be open every day at lunch and after

3.	The City of Berkeley will be observing Lincoln’s Birthday on Monday, 
February 13th and therefore the BHS Health Center will be closed all 
day.

4.	Auditions for the Berkeley High School Jazz Lab Band II 
(intermediate level) for fall 2006 will be held in  A201 on Tuesday, 
February  21, at 3:15 pm (saxophone, rhythm section, piano, guitar, 
trumpet) and Thursday, February 23, at 3:15 (trombone).  Questions?

5.	Job Opportunitie: Student needed for filing and organizing two to 
six hours per week in Albany; times are flexible. $7.50 per hour

6.	King Middle School After-school ELL Tutorial is looking for Spanish 
bilingual tutors who can work from 3-4 pm, on Monday, Tuesday and 
Thursday, and
from 2:15 – 3:15 pm on Wednesday.  We’ll also hire monolingual English 
speaking tutors who want to patiently work with middle school students. 
You must be in the 11th or 12th grade and able to get to King on time. 
Pay: $9.00 / hour.  Come to the Science Room 7 and ask for Patricia 
Rathwell  or Mrs. Hamai.  You may also call 644-4811.

7.	The pasta shop is looking for seniors to work on weekends at 1786 
Fourth Street in Berkeley.  Pick up an application at the store and ask 
for Porsche.  Salary: $8.50 per hour.  For more information go to

Clubs
1.	Attention Key Clubbers:  Elections will be held today, Feb. 13, at 
the general meeting during lunch in A105.  We will also be taking a 
yearbook picture that day so be sure to show up.

2.	Attention Culture and Exchange Cclub members:  Want to learn how to 
say "I love you" in five languages?  Then come to our exchange during 
1st period on Tuesday.  We will be meeting in C105 first period.  See 
Mr. Berkman in C107 for permission slips.

3.	The Reach out and Read Club is having a Valentine’s Day bake sale on 
Tuesday, February 14!  Come to the courtyard at lunch for delicious 
cookies, Valentine’s candies and beautiful roses.  Be romantic!

4.	The Reach Out and Read Club is having a book drive!  Reading at a 
young age is important and we can help!  Donations will be given to 
Children’s Hospital Oakland to be read and distributed to children when 
they visit. Between February 15 - March 15 please bring in any picture 
books, children’s books, or teen books to your 2nd period class.  The 
class with the most books at the end of the month will win a pizza 
party!

5.	HIV and AIDS are a serious matter.  In 2003, an estimated 7,081 
young people were living with AIDS, a 37% increase since 1999.  Stop 
the spread of this devastating disease.  Respect yourself.  Protect 
yourself.  Get HIV tested at the BHS Health center today.  It’s just a 
cotton swab saliva test, and it’s free and confidential.  Brought to 
you by the BHS Youth Advisory Board.

Sports
1.  Badminton try-outs will continue on Monday at 6:30 am!  Please be 
there!

Senior / Junior Section

1.	Seniors!  It’s time to purchase your senior pages.  A single page is 
$200 and a double page is $400.  Come by the yearbook room H102 
after-school!  The deadline to purchase is February 24th.  Limited 
amount of pages, so hurry!

2.	UPCOMING Presentations: All presentations in D221.  Sign up in D221 
and get an authorization form for your teacher to sign prior to the 
presentation.

3.	FAFSA Workshops: Bring your financial information and your 
questions. Trained assistants from UC Berkeley will be available to 
help you fill out the financial aid forms.  All workshops are in the 
Berkeley High School library computer lab:

Thursday, February 16 at 7:30 am
Tuesday, February 21at 3:30 pm

4.	For Seniors: Want to be a chef?  Would you like to work in a hotel 
management?  The Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Program of 
City College of San Francisco is now accepting applications for Fall

415-239-3152. Application deadline: April 10.

5.	Scholarships: Richard S. Navies Scholarship-seniors who are US 
citizens or legal residents, graduating from a Bay Area High School 
with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who haves been a varsity athlete for at least 
two years. Students should also have volunteered in school or community 
organizations.  Award: $2,500 or deadline: March 17.

6.	Sigma Pi Alpha Scholarship- Female senior of Chicano/ Latina 
background with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who plans to attend a two or four 
year institution after graduation and has financial need.  US 
citizenship or permanent residency is NOT a requirement.  Application 
available in D221. $250 scholarship.  Deadline: April 1.

7.	Ligurians in the World Association: A graduating senior who has at 
least one parent of Italian descent $1,000 scholarship.  Application 
available in D221.  Deadline: April 15.

8.	For Juniors-KRON 4 Students Rising Above Scholarship.  This is a 
scholarship for students who will graduate from high school and then 
attend college in 2007.  Students must be from low income families who 
are rising above great difficulties and succeeding in school and in 
life. Applications are available in D221.  Applications must be 
received by KRON by Tuesday, April 4.

9.	California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) 
is now accepting applications.  COSMOS is now enrolling students at 
four sites-UC Davis, Irvine, San Diego and Santa Cruz.  Tuition, room 
and board is $2,000, but FULL SCHOLARSHIPS are available for qualified 
students. The COSMOS course clusters address topics not traditionally 
taught in high schools such as astronomy, aerospace engineering, 
biomedical sciences, computer science, wetlands ecology, ocean science, 
robotics, game theory, and more.  The program runs from July 9 – August 
5.  Apply at <http://www.ucop.edu/cosmos/welcome.html>. Deadline is 
March 16 at 5:00 pm.

10.	Anita Baskerville Harris Scholarship Award – Graduating 
African-American female with a minimum GPA of 3.0 with financial need 
who is planning to attend a four year college or university.  
Scholarships range from $500 to $2,000.  Deadline: April 1.

Events/ Performance
1.	Come see the Vagina Monologues this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 10/11) 
in the Florence Schwimley Little Theater.  The Showing at 7:30 but the 
doors open at 7pm.  Tickets are $5 for students with ID and $10 for 
adults.  Our proceeds go to stop violence against women.  Come See the 
School.

SALES

1.	BART Tickets are here!  Please pick them up in D224.  See Irma 
Parker for more information.

2.	Neff will be on campus to sell letter jackets on Thursday, Feb. 16.  
Jackets are available in red and cream or black and black.  This will 
be the last round of letter jacket sales for the school year.  Payment 
must be made directly to Neff.  Delivery takes place 4-6 weeks after 
the order is placed.  Order forms are available in the Athletic Office.

3.	Yearbooks are on sale in H102 everyday at lunch and after school.  
They are $70 dollars.  Make checks payable to BHS yearbooks.
