SAT WORD OF THE DAY: ARCHETYPE – a prototype or original model.  The 
archetype for the first airplane was only a toy model, but it has led 
to modern jets and supersonic fighter planes.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES
The Pasta Shop is looking for seniors to work on weekends at 1786 
Fourth Street in Berkeley.  Pick up an application at the store and ask 
for Porsche.  Salary:  $8.50 per hour.  For more information on The

Student needed for filing and organizing two to six hours per week in 
Albany on the 43 bus line.  Times are flexible.  $7.50 per hour

King Middle School Afterschool ELL Tutorial is looking for Spanish 
bilingual tutors who can work from 3-4, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 
and from 2:15-3:15 on Wednesday.  We'll also hire monolingual 
English-speaking tutors who want to patiently work with middle school 
students.  You must be in 11th or 12th grade and able to get to King on 
time!  Pay:  $9.00/hour.  Come by the Science Building, Room 7 and ask

SCHOLARSHIPS
*Sigma Pi Alpha Sorority Scholarship - Female senior of Chicana/Latina 
background with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who plans to attend a two or four 
year institution after graduation and has financial need. U.S. 
Citizenship or permanent residency is NOT a requirement. Application 
available in D221. $250 scholarship. Deadline:  April 1.

* Ligurians in the World Association – A graduating senior who has at 
least one parent of Italian descent.  $1,000 scholarship.  Application 
available in D221.  Deadline:  April 15 (application must be received 
by the scholarship committee by that date).

Richard S. Navies Scholarship – Seniors who are U.S. citizens or legal 
residents, graduating from a Bay Area high school with a minimum GPA of 
2.5 who haves been a varsity athlete for at least two years.  Students 
should also have volunteered in school or community organizations. 
Award:  $2,500. Deadline:  March 17.

Anita Baskerville Harris Scholarship Award – Graduating 
African-American female with a minimum GPA of 3.0 with financial need 
who is planning to attend a four year college or university.  
Scholarships range from $500 to $2,000.  Deadline:  April 1.

Beach Blanket Babylon Scholarship for the Arts - Senior in a Bay Area 
High School with artistic talent shown by audition tape who will be 
attending an accredited college next year.  Awards in vocal, acting and 
dance areas.  Three $10,000 scholarships.  Deadline:  April 21.

Gill Scholarship – For Berkeley High seniors who have financial need.  
Essay and letters of recommendation required.  $1,000 scholarship 
renewable for three additional years of college.  Deadline:  April 6.

Berkeley Community Fund – Open only to Berkeley High seniors planning 
to attend two or four year college in the fall who have financial need 
and academic excellence.  Applications available in D221.  Deadline:  
March 6 – must be received at the Fund by March 6 at 5:00 p.m.

HACEMOS – Open to seniors who live in either Alameda or Contra Costa 
County who are planning to enroll in a two or four year college in the 
fall.  Applications available in D221.  Six to eight scholarships of 
$500-$2,000 each.  Deadline:  March 1.

Morris and Juliet James Achievement Award – Scholarship sponsored by 
the Berkeley Retired Teachers Association.  Must be a BHS senior.  
Preference goes to students who have attended Berkeley Unified School 
District schools for most of their school years.  Applications 
available in D221. Deadline:  April 5, 2006.

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
SAT/ACT TEST DATES – February 24 is the regular registration deadline 
for the April 1 SAT.   March 3 is the regular registration deadline for 
the April 8 ACT.

FOR JUNIORS
Nordstrom Scholarship Program – Current high school junior, minimum 2.7 
on a 4.0 scale, have financial need, reside in the Bay Area and not 
have a conviction of any crime.  Essay required.  Applications 
available in D221.  Deadline:  May 31.

ALL STUDENTS
Science Fiction and Fantasy Contest – sponsored by LA con IV, the 64th 
World Science Fiction Convention and Baltimore Worldcon 1998.  Students 
enter a short story with a science fiction or fantasy theme, original 
artwork with a science fiction or fantasy theme or a science essay.  
Complete rules and application available in D221.  Deadline:  March 31.

SUMMER PROGRAMS
California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) is 
now accepting applications.  COSMOS is now enrolling students at four 
sites – UC Davis, Irvine, San Diego and Santa Cruz.  Tuition, room and 
board is $2,000, but FULL SCHOLARSHIPS are available for qualified 
students.  The COSMOS course clusters address topics not traditionally 
taught in high schools such as astronomy, aerospace engineering, 
biomedical sciences, computer science, wetlands ecology, ocean science, 
robotics, game theory, and more.  The program runs from July 9-August 
5.  Apply at http://www.ucop.edu/cosmos/welcome.html.  Deadline is 
March 16 at 5:00 p.m.
