SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  PRISTINE - pure; completely clean and
uncontaminated.  The vast, pristine wilderness of northern Alaska is
too cold and remote for most people to inhabit.   

FOR SENIORS
*FAFSA Workshops
Bring your financial information and your questions.  Trained
assistants from UC Berkeley will be available to help you fill out
the financial aid forms.  All workshops are in the Berkeley High
School library computer lab.

Parents - did you miss the FAFSA information night in December?  A
videotape of the presentation is now available.  Send an e-mail to
iabrams at berkeley.k12.ca.us to get on the list to check out the tape.

If you applied to any colleges that require your first semester
grades, Mid-Year Report Forms are due to Ms. Mellion in D173 no later
than January 17.  Turn in the Mid-Year Report Form along with a
Transcript Request Form with "Mid Year Report" written across the top
and a stamped envelope addressed to the college with a return address
of Berkeley High School, 1980 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA  94704.
Remember that the cost of postage has increased to 39 cents per
ounce.

Cal Grant GPA Information Release Forms are now available in the
College Center and the Registrar's office.  It takes only a few
minutes to fill out.  This form, along with the FAFSA, determines
your eligibility for a Cal Grant.  

MISSED THE CAL STATE DEADLINE?
The following Cal State campuses are still accepting applications:
Cal Maritime, Bakersfield, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, East Bay
(formerly named Hayward), Fresno, Fullerton (Computer Science and
Engineering majors only), Los Angeles, Monterey Bay, Sacramento, San
Bernardino, San Marcos, Stanislaus, Humboldt, San Francisco (except
majors in Apparel Design & Merchandising, Interior Design, and Social
Work) and San Jose.  Please see me or Mr. Stringfellow if you would
like help filling out an application.  NOTE - THE DEADLINE TO APPLY
TO SAN FRANCISCO STATE IS JANUARY 13.  

SCHOLARSHIPS
Kiwanis Scholarship - Open to all students from Berkeley, Albany and
El Cerrito.  Two letters of recommendation and essay required.  A
total of $35,000 in scholarship money will be awarded. Complete
application must be received by Kiwanis by March 31.  

Lewis H. Latimer Scholarship - Open to African-American seniors with
a minimum GPA of 2.5 who is planning to enroll in a four year
college, community college or business school.  Essay and letter of
recommendation also required.  Applications available in D221. Award:
Minimum of $500.  Deadline:  March 3.

Hispanic Community Affairs Council - Senior of Hispanic heritage who
is a resident of Alameda County, planning to attend a community
college, four year college or approved technical or vocational
school.  Deadline:  March 3, 2006.  Award:  $500 (community college),
$1,000 (four year college).  

San Francisco Cherry Blossom Festival - open to seniors of Japanese
American descent with a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5.  $2,000
scholarship.  Applications available in D221.  Deadline:  March 23.


Banatao Engineering Scholarships - Open to all students of Filipino
heritage (at least 50%), minimum GPA of 3.0, planning to major in
engineering, computer or physical sciences and has
financial need.  Five renewable scholarships of $5,000 each.
Applications available in D221.  Deadline:  February 10. 

Pick up a list of all of the scholarships that have been listed in
the bulletin in D221.

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
College Admissions and the Student Athlete - January 18, 7:30 to 9:00
p.m., Bishop O'Dowd High School, Theater, 9500 Stearns Ave., Oakland
, CA.  Get all of your questions answered on the college athletic
recruitment process.  For more information, contact Lisa Coffey

Free SAT and ACT prep for Berkeley library card holders.  Go to
www.berkeleypubliclibrary.org/.  Then click on Electronic Resources,
then Education, then Learn A Test.  You will be asked for your name
and library card number at this point. Under subject category
"College Entrance Exams" choose one of the SAT or ACT options.  

ARTISTS - National Portfolio Day, Saturday, January 21 at Art Academy
University, 79 New Montgomery St., San Francisco, 12:00 noon - 4:00pm
This is your chance to have your portfolio reviewed by an expert.
Representatives of over 30 leading colleges of art and design will be
present.  For more information, go to www.npda.org or call

SAT/ACT TEST DATES - February 24 is the regular registration deadline
for the April 1 SAT.  January 20 is the late registration deadline
for the February 11 ACT.  Seniors, please remember that you must list
all of your colleges on the registration form to receive your
official scores. 

FOR JUNIORS
Mr. Stringfellow and I will be meeting with all junior English
classes at the beginning of February.  Following the group meetings,
you will be able to sign up for individual meetings with one of us.

Tuesday, February 7, 6:30-8:30 p.m.  Junior parent college meeting in
the Berkeley High library.  Enter at 1980 Allston Way.  I will
provide an overview of all aspects of the college admissions process.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR JUNIORS - Discover Card Tribute Award
Scholarship.  Up to $25,000 per winner.  Open to all juniors who have
a minimum GPA of 2.75 for 9th and 10th grades, have experienced
significant obstacles and are giving back to their communities.

Deadline:  January 31, 2006.  

ALL STUDENTS
*Etude Club of Berkeley offers over $1500 in prizes in the Young
Artist Award Competition.  Awards in piano, voice and orchestral
instruments.  For application and audition requirements, call Dr.
Susan Waller at 925-829-4922.  Deadline:  March 15.  

Save Me A Spot in College Scholarship Contest.  Use your talents to
write an essay, create a poster or produce a 30 second TV ad on the
topic: Why should California leaders save you and your peers a spot
in college?  A total of $50,000 in scholarship prizes will be
awarded.  Open to all students in grades 6-12. For more information,

Deadline:  March 15.

SUMMER PROGRAMS
California State Summer School for the Arts (Innerspark).  This is a
month-long arts training program in animation, visual arts, dance,
music, film/video, theatre and creative writing for talented artists.
July 8-August 5 at California Institute for the Arts in Valencia,
California.  Students may apply in one or more disciplines.  Cost is
$2,185, need-based scholarships are available.  Applications
available at www.innerspark.us.  Deadline:  February 28.  

Smith College Summer Science & Engineering - Open to high school
girls with a strong interest in science, engineering and/or medicine.
$4,000, but scholarships are available.  Four weeks:  July 2-29.
