SAT WORD OF THE DAY: BANDY – To exchange; to toss about, as a ball
from person to person. The student council gathered to bandy about
ideas for a theme for the graduation party.
PSAT scores are here! Students may pick up their scores in the
College/Career Center at lunchtime and from 3:15 to 4:00 ONLY.
FOR SENIORS
*If you need an appointment with the College Advisor, come by the
College Center and sign up. There are many slots available.
UC MERCED CONTINUES TO ACCEPT APPLICATIONS. If you would like to apply
to UC Merced, you may do so up by mailing your application by January
14, 2006. You must apply by mail. You can download an application at
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/apply/
download.html or pick one up in D221. If you still need to take either
the SAT reasoning test or SAT subject tests, you can do so on January
28.
Cal Grant GPA Information Release Forms are now available in the
College Center and the Registrar’s office. It takes only a few minutes
to fill out. This form, along with the FAFSA, determines your
eligibility for a Cal Grant.
FINANCIAL AID – The new FAFSA on the Web Worksheet is now available in
the College/Career Center. Come by to pick up a copy so that you can
be prepare to file the FAFSA online.
E-MAIL REMINDER – Many colleges communicate with you solely through
e-mail. Remember to set your spam filters low and check your e-mail,
including your spam folder, at least several times a week. If you have
a yahoo or hotmail account, remember to empty your messages so that
your inbox does not get full and messages are returned to the colleges.
If you have not yet gotten two FAFSA PIN numbers – one for the student
and one for a parent or guardian – do so now. It takes only a few
minutes and will allow you to file your FAFSA online, which I strongly
recommend. Go to www.pin.ed.gov to apply for your PIN numbers.
MISSED THE CAL STATE DEADLINE?
The following Cal State campuses are still accepting applications: Cal
Maritime, Bakersfield, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, East Bay
(formerly named Hayward), Fresno, Fullerton (Computer Science and
Engineering majors only), Los Angeles, Monterey Bay, Sacramento, San
Bernardino, San Marcos, Stanislaus, Humboldt, San Francisco (except
majors in Apparel Design & Merchandising, Interior Design, and Social
Work) and San Jose. Please see me or Mr. Stringfellow if you would
like help filling out an application.
SCHOLARSHIPS
UCLA alumni scholarships – Apply at www.UCLAlumni.net/Scholarships.
Deadline: February 15, 2006.
Gates Millenium Scholars Program – Open to all low income African
American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander
American or Hispanic American students who are U.S. citizens or legal
permanent residents, with a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.3.
Applications available in the College Center or at www.gmsp.org. You
must have a nominator and recommender for your application. Deadline:
January 13, 2006
AXA Achievement Community Scholarship (please note this is different
than the other AXA scholarship) – open to seniors who are U.S. citizens
or legal residents who are planning to attend a two or four year
college in the fall and who have outstanding achievement in school,
community or work activities. $2,000 scholarship. Applications
available in D221 or at www.axaonline.com/axafoundation. Deadline:
February 17, 2006
Italian Catholic Federation Scholarship – seniors who are Catholic and
of Italian descent and who have a minimum GPA of at least 3.2 are
eligible. Applications available in D221. $400 scholarship. Deadline:
March 15, 2006.
UTSA Tennis & Education Foundation – numerous scholarships for students
who play tennis and have financial need, ranging in value from $500 to
$15,000 each. Applications available in D221. Deadline: February 3,
2006.
Ronald McDonald House Charities Scholarship. Open to all seniors who
are planning to attend a two or four year college or university.
Minimum scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded by each local chapter.
Applications available in D221. Deadline: January 17.
Sam Walton Community Scholarship. Must be a graduating senior. Log on
to www.walmartfoundation.org for more information. Apply online only
at www.scholarshipadministrators.net. Use the access code SWCS to
complete the application. $1,000 scholarship. Deadline: January 20.
Don and Roy Splawn Charitable Foundation West. Award: up to $1,000
based on financial need, academic qualifications, dedication to school,
community and family, and extraordinary circumstances. Based primarily
on overcoming personal challenges. Apply online only at
www.fsrequests.com/splawn. Deadline: January 20, 5:00 p.m. EST.
FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
*ARTISTS – National Portfolio Day, Saturday, January 21 at Art Academy
University, 79 New Montgomery St. , San Francisco, 12:00 noon - 4:00pm
This is your chance to have your portfolio reviewed by an expert.
Representatives of over 30 leading colleges of art and design will be

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – January 4 is the late registration deadline for
the January 28 SAT. January 6 is the regular registration deadline for
the February 11 ACT. Seniors, please remember that you must list all
of your colleges on the registration form to receive your official
scores.
FOR JUNIORS
SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR JUNIORS - Discover Card Tribute Award
Scholarship. Up to $25,000 per winner. Open to all juniors who have a
minimum GPA of 2.75 for 9th and 10th grades, have experienced
significant obstacles and are giving back to their communities.

January 31, 2006.
ALL STUDENTS
Save Me A Spot in College Scholarship Contest. Use your talents to
write an essay, create a poster or produce a 30 second TV ad on the
topic: Why should California leaders save you and your peers a spot in
college? A total of $50,000 in scholarship prizes will be awarded.
Open to all students in grades 6-12. For more information, go to

BLACK COLLEGE TOURS
Students interested in traveling on the Spring 2006 Black College Tour
to visit HBCU Campuses such as Howard University, Hampton University,
North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T, and several others, College
Bound Tours, is accepting deposits. The tour dates are April 9-16th,
2006, which is Spring Break for BHS. Tour cost is $1500.00. Visit

Educational Student Tours presents Black College Tours. Tours are six
days long, beginning either April 9 or June 25, 2006. Tour brochures

SUMMER PROGRAMS
George Washington University Summer Scholars Pre-College Program.
Several programs including – Applied pre-engineering, Engineering and
Summer Science Research Scholarship (physics and biophysics), as well
as programs in the humanities. For applications and information, go to

SUMMER OPPORTUNITY – Stanford University Center for Clinical Immunology
Summer Intern Program. If you are interested in biology, apply for
this 8 week program consisting of lab research, lectures by selected
faculty and graduates and some clinical exposure. Interns will be paid
$1,500. No housing is provided. Applications are available at
