SAT WORD OF THE DAY: COGNIZANT - aware. Because he was out buying
donuts, Homer Simpson was not cognizant of the fact that there had
been a total nuclear core meltdown.
FINANCIAL AID NIGHTS FOR SENIOR PARENTS: A two-part financial aid
workshop - November 10 and December 6, both at 6:30 in the BHS
library. Please come and bring all your questions about financial
aid, merit aid and scholarships. November 10th will include an
overview of financial aid and how the Estimated Family Contribution
is calculated. On December 6th, a representative of the UC Berkeley
Financial Aid Office will walk us through the FAFSA, line by line and
I will discuss the CSS Profile.
FOR SENIORS
*SAT SUBJECT LISTENING TESTS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGES - If you are taking
one of these tests on Saturday, you MUST bring a CD player with you
so that you can hear the tape. If you do not bring a portable CD
player to the test, you will not be able to take the test.
REMINDER - NOVEMBER 10 - If you are applying to any private schools
which require counselor recommendations, your large envelopes
addressed to each college, along with a Transcript Request Form and
the Counselor Recommendation Form (also called the School Report
Form), are due in the College/Career Center no later than November
10th. If you have questions about how to organize these forms, stop
by and talk with Ms. Abrams or Ms. Harris.
Parents - Did you miss the Senior Parent Night presentation on
September 25? You can now borrow a video of the meeting. Please
e-mail me if you are interested and I will put your name on the list.
Seniors - if you haven't had an appointment yet with one of the
college advisors, there are many slots now available. Come in and
sign up!
COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVE VISITS. The October list is available in
D221. Sign up to get more information on colleges from around the
country. You must have your teacher's signed authorization to attend

ESSAY READERS ARE HERE
UPDATED TIMES - Do you need some help with your college application
essay? Starting this week, essay readers will be available every day
before school, at lunch, and after school (except Friday after
school). Essay readers will also be available on Wednesdays, 6th
period, for seniors who do not have a class then.

COLLEGE INFORMATION SESSIONS IN THE BAY AREA
November 21 - University of Vermont information session. Children's
Hospital Oakland Research Institute, 5700 Martin Luther King Jr. Way,

SCHOLARSHIPS
*Miss Teen Chinatown Scholarship. Applicants must submit a recent
photo, official transcript and application. Applications are
available in D221. For more information, go to
www.sfclcfoundation.org or call 650-348-2333. Deadline: December
31.
*Toyota Community Scholars. 100 renewable scholarships valued at
$10,000 to $20,000 payable over four years. Students must have a GPA
of 3.0 or higher, be involved in a service organization or project
that has a positive impact on the school and/or community, be a US
citizen or permanent resident, plan to attend a 4 year college in the
U.S.
Don and Roy Splawn Charitable Foundation West. Award: up to $1,000
based on financial need, academic qualifications, dedication to
school, community and family, and extraordinary circumstances. Based
primarily on overcoming personal challenges. Apply online only at
www.fsrequests.com/splawn. Deadline: January 20, 5:00 p.m. EST.
FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
SAT/ACT TEST DATES - November 4 is the regular registration for the
December 10 ACT. November 9 is the late registration deadline for
the December 3 SAT and SAT subject tests. These are the last tests
recommended for the UC and Cal State campuses, as well as many
private schools. For the UC's, please remember that you must
register by the regular registration deadline and list all of your
colleges on the registration form to receive scores. You can update
this information up to the Wednesday after the SAT test.
FOR ALL STUDENTS
HIGH SCHOOL STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIPS AND STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITIES
- The World Affairs Council and the Youth For Understanding USA
offers scholarships to Northern California high school students to
study abroad for a summer, semester or year. Applications for both
the scholarship and study abroad program are available in the
College/Career Center and at www.itsyourworld.org/schools or at
www.yfu-usa.org. Recommendations are required. Postmark deadline:
December 13.
