SAT WORD OF THE DAY: PENURY – extreme poverty. If you only have a
penny, that’s penury!
The next senior parent’s College Night will be held on Tuesday, October
25 at 6:30 in the BHS library. Speakers include the new director of
admissions at UC Berkeley and representatives from the California State
University system, a private university and community colleges. I look
forward to seeing you all!
*PSAT – The last possible time to sign up for the PSAT is TODAY at
lunch and after school until 4:00 p.m. at the D building ticket window
on Allston Way. The cost is $22, cash or money order only. Money orders
should be made payable to Berkeley High. If you think your family
income qualifies you for a fee waiver for the PSAT, please see Ms.
Abrams in the College/ Career Center for documentation. Then bring the
paperwork to the ticket window on Allston Way on Tuesday during lunch
or after school to 4 p.m. and the test will cost nothing. The PSAT
will be given October 15th, Saturday. Students should report to the
garden area between the Donahue Gym and the C building at 8:30 a.m.
Bring your receipt, your photo ID, a calculator and several number 2
pencils.

Do you need some help with your college application essay? Essay
readers will be available the weeks of October 10th and October 17th as
follows: before school on Monday, Tuesday and Friday; lunch every day,
and after school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Additional times
will be added later in the month, but don't wait until the last minute!

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
SAT/ACT TEST DATES – TODAY - October 12 is the late registration
deadline for the November 5 SAT and SAT subject tests. November 4 is
the regular registration for the December 3 ACT. I generally recommend
that juniors take the PSAT in October and wait until spring to take the
SAT or the ACT.
FOR ALL STUDENTS
*HIGH SCHOOL STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIPS AND STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITIES –
The World Affairs Council and the Youth For Understanding USA offers
scholarships to Northern California high school students to study
abroad for a summer, semester or year. Applications for both the
scholarship and study abroad program are available in the
College/Career Center and at www.itsyourworld.org/schools or at
www.yfu-usa.org. Recommendations are required. Postmark deadline:
December 13.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY – The Youth Group of Family Resource Network
pairs able-bodied students with youth ages 12-21 with Down Syndrome,
Autism and Cerebral Palsy. Orientation meeting on October 12, 4-5pm at
the Family Resource Network, 5232 Claremont Avenue, Oakland. Enter at
the rear of the building. Call 547-7322 for more information.
Mentoring for Academic Success – free tutoring by UC Berkeley tutors in
D221 every Monday and Wednesday from 3:15 to 5:15. For more
