College Advisor's Bulletin
Wednesday, June 15, 2005

SAT WORD OF THE DAY: DEBUNK – to show the falsehood of something.
Galileo was the first prominent European intellectual to debunk the
notion that the Earth was the center of the Universe.

BHS ALUMNI AND CURRENT STUDENTS – If you won a Governor’s Scholars
Award in 2000, 2001 or 2002, you must claim the award or you may lose
it. The deadline to claim an award won in 2000 is June 30, 2005.
However, if you won an award in 2001 or 2002, don’t delay claiming it!
Once an award is claimed, students can use the scholarships to pay
higher education expenses at vocational, technical and trade schools,
two- and four-year colleges, and graduate school until they reach 30
years of age. Students can claim awards online at
www.scholarshare.com. If you have lost your PIN number, please e-mail
me or stop by and I can give it to you. I will not be available after
June 17th.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Job Corps – If you are over 16 and from a low income home, you may be
eligible to participate in Job Corps. Get paid while you get free
career, academic and social skills training. For more information,
call 310-670-0711 or pick up a flyer in the College/Career Center.

FOR JUNIORS
Stevens Institute of Technology is offering online summer classes in
pre-calculus, calculus, physics and computer science, June 20-August
18. For more information, go to
http://www.stevens.edu/undergrad/euclid.html.

If you are considering applying to a private college, pick up the
Senior Profile in the College/Career Center so that you can complete it
over the summer. The information you provide will be used by your
counselor to write your recommendation.

The “Junior Summer To Do List” is now available in the College/Career
Center. Pick up your copy so that you can get some of your college
preparation done over the summer, which will make your senior year much
easier.

SENIOR SECTION.
Turn in a Transcript Request Form to Ms. Mellion in D173 so that we can
send an official transcript to the school you will be attending in the
fall. This is required for all four year colleges. Write in capital
letters across the top “FINAL TRANSCRIPT” and paperclip it to a stamped
business size envelope addressed to the college. Use Berkeley High
School as the return address (1980 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA 94704),
not your home address. If you are under 18, please remember to have
your parent or guardian sign the request form. Deadline was June 3rd –
so if you haven’t done it already, don’t delay!

If you are getting below a C in a class and are planning to attend a
four year school in the fall, you MUST contact the school and discuss
your options with them. Otherwise the school may rescind your
admission or take other disciplinary action when they receive your
official transcript during the summer. If you have any questions or
want to discuss your grades and options, please come by at lunch or
after school.
