SAT WORD OF THE DAY: LEGACY – something left by a predecessor to
successors. Early jazz artists left a rich legacy of musical
innovations that today are the basis of a wide range of compositions.
FOR JUNIORS
JUNIORS – the new UC eligibility index is now available. You can find
it at
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/
paths_to_adm/freshman/scholarship_reqs.html. (Delete the period from
the end of the URL) Paper forms to calculate your eligibility are also
available in the College Center.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) has a paid internship
opportunity for current sophomores who are interested in engineering.
Economically disadvantaged youth or students who will be the first in
their family to go to college are especially encouraged to apply, but
the program is open to all applicants. Minimum GPA of 2.5 is required.
Students will work 2-3 hours after school and full time during the
summer. Applications available in the College Center. Deadline: May
27th.
SightSpeed creates innovative software that turns your PC or Mac into
an easy-to-use
video phone. They are looking for office help 15-20 hours per week
during the school year and additional hours during the summer. Must be
able to lift 25 pounds and have basic computer skills. Send a cover
letter and work history to resume-support at sightspeed.com.
SENIOR SECTION.
Turn in a Transcript Request Form to Ms. Mellion in D173 so that we can
send an official transcript to the school you will be attending in the
fall. This is required for all four year colleges. Write in capital
letters across the top “FINAL TRANSCRIPT” and paperclip it to a stamped
business size envelope addressed to the college. Use Berkeley High
School as the return address, not your home address. If you are under
18, please remember to have your parent or guardian sign the request
form.
Vista College has a new major – the Global Studies Program. Get an AA
degree that prepares you for transfer to many UC and CSU programs; take
classes with the same students for two years; work closely with core
faculty and counselors and work at local non-profits. For more

SCHOLARSHIPS
Below are samples of the many scholarships available in the
College/Career Center. Don’t miss this opportunity for free money!
Kaiser Permanente Latino Association Scholarship Program (KPLA) –
Senior of Latino heritage graduating in spring 2005, minimum GPA of
2.5, with career goals in any Allied Health Care major including
indirect services such as business, HR, IT, marketing in health care.
$2,000 scholarship. Deadline: May 31.
James Beard Foundation has many scholarships for students pursuing
culinary studies. Come by the College Center to pick up the
application. Deadline: June 30.
Pac-West Scholarship – California resident with a cumulative unweighted
GPA of 3.5 or higher, minimum SAT score of 1100 or ACT score of 24
planning to attend a 4 year college in the fall. $5,000 scholarship.
Students planning to attend University of the Pacific or Santa Clara
are eligible for additional monies. Deadline: June 30.
Charlie Cords Memorial Scholarship – Male students planning to attend
UC Berkeley . Up to $2,500 awarded. Applications available at
http://ducalifornia.org/scholarships. E-mail Derick Koo Sohn at
DKSohn at berkeley.edu if you have any questions. Deadline: August 13,
but apply ASAP.
John F. McGillicuddy Scholarship Program – Must have 3.0 GPA or better
in the 11th and 12th grades, show involvement in community service,
have financial need and plan to attend a United Negro College Fund
college or university in the fall. Covers full or partial tuition and
room and board for four years. Applications available in the College
Center. Deadline: May 31.
