SAT WORD OF THE DAY:   SUFFRAGE – the political right to vote; 
enfranchisement.  Wyoming was the first state to grant women suffrage, 
allowing them to vote in 1879.

Ms. Abrams will be out of the office on Monday and Tuesday, April 18 
and 19.

PRESENTATION
Tuesday, April 19, 10:35 – Wyo Tech will talk about career 
opportunities in the aviation industry (technical, aircraft mechanics 
and related opportunities.  Several thousand jobs will become available 
in the next decade - especially in the technical field.  All students 
welcome.

JOB OPPORTUNITY – City of El Cerrito Recreation Jobs for students ages 
16-19 as counselors, assistant counselors and lifeguards.  For more

Meyer Sound Labs has paid summer internships for high school students 
(must be 16 year old) in its manufacturing operations. We are looking 
for a 6-8 week commitment of 30 hours per week. If you are interested

SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS
April 30, 1:00 to 4:30 – College Fair at St. Mary’s College of 
California, Moraga.  This is the biggest college fair of the year, with 
over 150 colleges represented.  There will also be workshops on 
admissions, financial aid, athletics, Historically Black Colleges and 
more, some in Spanish.  Take BART to Orinda and pick up the free 
shuttle to the fair.  Don’t miss this great opportunity!

SENIOR SECTION.
Emergency Medical Technician training – June 3 to July 24, 2005, 
Fridays 6-10 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays, 9:00 am to 5:00 p.m.  Cost of 
$995 includes textbooks, handouts and skills instruction.  For more

Seniors – this is your chance to be recognized!  The Senior Awards 
Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the Community 
Theater.  Pick up the Senior Awards Ceremony form in the College/Career 
Center and let us know about scholarships, awards and honors you have 
won.  Deadline:  Wednesday, May 11 so you can be listed in the program.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Below are samples of the many scholarships available in the 
College/Career Center.  Don’t miss this opportunity for free money!  An 
updated list is printed every Monday.

John F. McGillicuddy Scholarship Program – Must have 3.0 GPA or better 
in the 11th and 12th grades, show involvement in community service, 
have financial need and plan to attend a United Negro College Fund 
college or university in the fall.  Covers full or partial tuition and 
room and board for four years.  Applications available in the College 
Center. Deadline:  May 31.

Outstanding Chinese American Student Award – Recipient must be 
available on June 26 at the awards dinner to accept the award.  
Application and essay.  Deadline:  April 30.

Gill Scholarship #2 – Senior attending college in the fall with 
established financial need and academic potential.  Essay and two 
letters of recommendation required. $1,000 scholarship renewable for 
three additional years.  Deadline:  April 21.

FOR JUNIORS
23rd Annual Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Program Summer Conference, 
July 30-August 6 at Sacramento State University.  Open to current 10th 
and 11th graders.  Activities include Legislative Day at the State 
Capital, campaign development workshops and College Day where you will 
meet with college and financial aid experts, and leadership training.  
Applications available in D221 and online at www.clylp.com.   Postmark 
deadline:  May 2.

Free SAT II workshops at UC Berkeley.  April 23 – Math IIC or Spanish.

Artists – Savannah College of Art and Design is holding a reception on 
Saturday, April 23 at 1:00 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 150 Anza 
Blvd., in Burlingame.  They will discuss their academic programs, 
application process, portfolio preparation and scholarship 
opportunities.  Individual portfolio counseling is available by 
appointment.  To register for the reception or make a portfolio

Confused about which schools need SAT subject tests (formerly called 
SAT II) and how many?  Here’s a very helpful web site:  
http://www.compassprep.com/subject_test.  I recommend that you double 
check this information with each school’s admissions web site.

If you have not yet made an appointment to see me, now is the time to 
sign up.  Appointment slots are available.  Come to the College Center.

SAT – April 29 is the regular registration deadline for the June 4th  
New SAT and SAT subject tests.
ACT – May 6 is the regular registration deadline for the June 11 ACT 
test.
