The recent PBS series, "The New Americans," follows a
diverse group of immigrants and refugees as they leave
their home and families behind and learn what it means
to be Americans in the 21st century. From the
producers and director of "Hoop Dreams," "The New
Americans" captures the lives of contemporary
immigrants in all their complexities. The series
portrays ordinary people, engaged in day-to-day
struggles of earning a living, raising a family, and
leading productive lives, while struggling with
differences of race, language, and culture.

Episode 1 of "The New Americans" is titled "Domenican
Baseball Players." The Domenican Republic supplies
more players to Major League Baseball than any other
country outside the U.S. Since the Los Angeles Dodgers
built Campo Las Palmas here in 1976, two dozen other
U.S. teams have opened their own facilities as well.
Baseball is everything to these young men who dream of
playing in Dodger Stadium. The very real prospect of
making it in the U.S. Major Leagues is almost a curse;
the pressure on the player is enormous.
