COLLEGE VISITS
MONDAY, APRIL 4, 1:20 p.m. – Harvard University.

Sign up in the College Center to attend.

SENIOR SECTION.

College of Alameda is hosting “Spring into College” days including 
priority registration, one-stop services including assessment testing, 
orientation, counseling, program planning and enrollment, financial aid 
and transferring.  March 30 and 31, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00.  (Students only 
attend for one day.)  To register, call Anna O’Neal at (510) 748-2307.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Below are samples of the many scholarships available in the 
College/Career Center.  Don’t miss this opportunity for free money!  An 
updated list is printed every Monday.

*California Labor Federation - Senior attending accredited college in 
the fall.  Essay and transcript required.  Applications available in 
the College Center.  Deadline:  4/15/05

Elsie Carrington Rumford  Scholarship - African American female senior 
attending high school in Alameda or Contra Costa County with an 
unweighted minimum GPA of 2.5 who is planning to attend a vocational 
program or two or four year college and demonstrates economic need.  
Applications available in the College Center.  Deadline:  April 9.

Morris and Juliet James Achievement Award - students must have attended 
Berkeley public elementary, middle and high schools, participated in 
community service and are interested in becoming a teacher or working 
with people in another capacity.  $2,000.  Applications due in D-221 by 
April 15.

100 Black Men of the Bay Area & the National Coalition of 100 Black 
Women – Bay Area high school senior planning to attend four or two year 
college or trade school with a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.5 during 
grades 10-12 and financial need.  Applications available in the College 
Center.  Deadline:  March 31.

Alpha Kappa Alpha - Graduating African American female with a minimum 
GPA of 3.0, not including non-academic courses with economic need.  
$500-$2,000.  Deadline:  April 1.

Oakland Association of Insurance Agents - Graduating senior with a 
minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 with financial need who has participated 
in community service.  $5,000 scholarship and peer mentoring and 
advising.  Deadline:  March 31 (received date).

FOR JUNIORS
ACT – March 18 is the late registration deadline for the April 9 ACT 
test.
SAT – March 25 is the regular registration deadline for the May 7th New 
SAT and SAT subject tests.

FOR ALL GRADES
TODAY - Friday, March 18 , 10:35 - Tryre B. Mills of the Berkeley Fire 
Department Youth Academy will talk about the 6-week Youth Academy, 
starting Saturday, April 2.  College and Career Center.  Become 
familiar with fire fighting equipment, participate in fire fighting 
training activities, and obtain a certification in community CPR and 
first aid.  Get hands-on training and learn about a career in the 
Berkeley Fire Department.  Both male and female students are encouraged 
to apply.

March 23, 10:35 (3rd period) – See a short film and meet with one of 
last year’s participants of Seeking Common Ground, which is looking for 
participants for two international leadership development and 
peace-building teen programs. Building Bridges for Peace brings 
together American, Israeli and Palestinian teen women aged 16 and 19. 
Face to Face/Faith to Faith is for teen men and women from the US, 
Israel, Northern Ireland and South Africa who are going into 10th, 11th 
and 12th grade this fall. Both programs begin with a 2-week camp this 
summer.  Join us on to see a short film, meet with one of last year’s 
participants and learn more about the application process.

Center.  Come by and see the wide range of programs available.
