SAT WORD OF THE DAY:    HYPERBOLE – exaggeration.  Hyperbole is one 
million times more important than any other SAT Word of the Day.

AOL PROBLEM – I am not able to reply to many aol addresses as the 
e-mail bounces back to me.  If you are an AOL subscriber, please check 
your spam settings and lower them.  If you are waiting for decisions 
from colleges, this is especially important.

TODAY - COMMUNITY COLLEGE INFORMATION DAY

THURSDAY, MARCH 3
All presentations are in the College Center.  This is a great 
opportunity to find out about certificate programs in many career 
areas, including construction, nursing, culinary, computers, 
architecture, business and more.  Sign up in the College Center to 
attend.

10:35 a.m.	Transfer opportunities to UC Berkeley
2:20 p.m.	Vista College

Wednesday, March 16, 9:30 a.m.	Cal Poly San Luis Obispo – for admitted 
seniors and juniors who are interested in the school.
Thursday, March 17, 2:20 p.m.	Prescott College, Arizona


SENIOR SECTION.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Below are samples of the many scholarships available in the 
College/Career Center.  Don’t miss this opportunity for free money!  An 
updated list is printed every Monday.

*Oakland Association of Insurance Agents - Graduating senior with a 
minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 with financial need who has participated 
in community service.  $5,000 scholarship and peer mentoring and 
advising.  Deadline:  March 31 (received date).

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority – African American senior attending two or 
four year college in the fall.  Recommendations and essay required.  
$2,500.  Deadline: March 19.

Berkeley Community Fund – Senior planning to attend 2 or 4 year college 
in the fall of 2005, minimum GPA of 2.5, participates in 
extracurricular activities, community service and/or employment.  
Applications available in the College Center or at 
www.berkfund.org/apply_for_grant.htm  $500-$3,000.  Deadline:  March 7.

FOR JUNIORS
KRON Students Rising Above Scholarship.  These scholarships are for low 
income students who are rising above great difficulties and succeeding 
in school and in life.  These difficulties may include poverty, 
neglect, violence, homelessness or serious illness.  Students must be 
U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, 
are committed to earning a college degree, and are low income or living 
on government assistance.  Must be recommended by a teacher, counselor 
or mentor.  Applications available in the College Center.  Received 
deadline:  April 15.

Parents – if you missed the College Meeting for Junior Parents, the 
videotape is now available.  Send an e-mail to 
iabrams at berkeley.k12.ca.us to sign up to borrow it.  You may borrow the 
tape for up to three days.

ACT – March 4 is the regular registration deadline for the April 9 ACT 
test.
SAT – March 25 is the regular registration deadline for the May 7th  
New SAT and SAT subject tests.

FOR ALL GRADES
* March 15 – 7-9 p.m.  Students and Parents interested in getting the 
most current information on enlisting in the military, registering for 
Selective Service, or specific issues concerning the Draft are welcome 
to join a panel of lawyers and parents of Berkeley High Students in the 
Counseling Center.   Sponsered by BHS College/Career Center and 
Academic Choice.

Berkeley Fire Department Youth Academy.  All students ages 14-19 are 
eligible to participate in this 6 week Youth Academy, held on Saturday 
mornings from 9 am to noon.  Applications are available at the Berkeley 
Fire Department Administrative Office, 2100 MLK Jr. Way, 2nd Floor. 
Deadline:  March 18th. For more information, contact Dory Ehrlich at 
981-5506.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
The list of summer opportunities is now available in the College/Career 
Center.  Come by and see the wide range of programs available.  
Following are a few samples:

*Exploring Leadership is a program of Coro Northern California, a 62 
year-old, non- partisan nonprofit that offers leadership training in 
public affairs for youth and adults.  Exploring Leadership is full-time 
in the summer (June 27-August 19) and after school in the fall.
Current 10th & 11th graders in Oakland, Berkeley, Piedmont, Emeryville, 
Alameda and San Francisco are eligible.  Participants will earn $1000, 
participate in an internship,get hands-on leadership training and meet 
diverse youth from the Bay Area.  Applications available in the College 
Center or at http://www.coro.org.  Application deadline:  March 18.

Internship – Metropolitan Transportation Commission.  The purpose of 
the program is to introduce high school students to career 
opportunities in the transportation field and to assist MTC’s 
transportation partners (such as traffic engineers at city and county 
public works departments or planners at transit agencies) with 
assistance.  Salary: $8.25 per hour.  Students may work full or part 
time between June and August.  Applicants must be 16 years old, 
completed the 10th grade and have a minimum GPA of 2.8. Applications
