SAT WORD OF THE DAY:    OMINOUS – giving indications that something bad 
is about to happen.  When I saw the large asteroid streaking through 
the sky, I had an ominous feeling that the Earth was about to be 
destroyed.

Ms. Abrams will be away from school visiting colleges on today and 
Wednesday, February 22 and 23.  There will be no College Advisor’s 
Bulletin on Wednesday.

We have found several calculators in the College/Career Center.  Come 
by to identify yours if you have lost one.

COLLEGE VISITS
March 1, 10:35 – Academy of Art University.  The representative will 
speak about undergraduate programs as well as summer programs for high 
school students.

CALIFORNIA COLLEGE OF THE ARTS – Open House on February 26 at both the 
Oakland and San Francisco campuses.  Oakland tours begin at 10:00 am 
followed by presentations at 11:00.  SF tours begin at 2:00 followed by 
presentations at 2:30.  For more information, call 800-447-1ART or

SENIOR SECTION.
FAFSA WORKSHOPS – Get help filling out your FAFSA.  Students, parents, 
and guardians welcome.  February 24 and 25 at 3:30 p.m. in the Berkeley 
High library.  You must sign up in the College Center.

Cash for College Days – Get individual help filling out the FAFSA and 
preparing your tax returns.  To complete the FAFSA (and your tax 
returns, if you want), bring your parent or guardian, social security 
card or alien registration card and 2004 tax returns or 2004 income 
records.  All events will be held in English and Spanish. Saturday, 
February 26 – Laney College – Forum, 900 Fallon Street, Oakland, CA, 10 
am to 2 pm.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Below are samples of the many scholarships available in the 
College/Career Center.  Don’t miss this opportunity for free money!  An 
updated list is printed every Monday.

Anita Baskerville Harris Scholarship Award – For outstanding African 
American female high school graduates, based on achievement and 
financial need.  Essay required.  $500 to $2,000.  Deadline:  April 1.

P.Y. Wen – For freshmen at San Francisco State College of Business.  
Minimum GPA of 3.25 with financial need.  Applications available in the 
College Center.  Deadline:  September 30

Berkeley Community Fund – Senior planning to attend 2 or 4 year college 
in the fall of 2005, minimum GPA of 2.5, participates in 
extracurricular activities, community service and/or employment.  
Applications available in the College Center or at 
www.berkfund.org/apply_for_grant.htm  $500-$3,000.  Deadline:  March 7.

FOR JUNIORS
Parents – if you missed the College Meeting for Junior Parents, the 
videotape is now available.  Send an e-mail to 
iabrams at berkeley.k12.ca.us to sign up to borrow it.  You may borrow the 
tape for up to three days.

College Admissions 101 – free workshop on the college admissions 
process and SAT preparation.  Saturday, February 26, 9:00 a.m. to noon, 
at Classroom Matters, 2607 – 7th Street, Suite E, Berkeley.  Space

ACT – March 4 is the regular registration deadline for the April 9 ACT 
test.
SAT – March 25 is the regular registration deadline for the May 7th  
New SAT and SAT subject tests.

FOR ALL GRADES
Berkeley Fire Department Youth Academy.  All students ages 14-19 are 
eligible to participate in this 6 week Youth Academy, held on Saturday 
mornings from 9 am to noon.  Applications are available at the Berkeley 
Fire Department Administrative Office, 2100 MLK Jr. Way, 2nd Floor. 
Deadline:  March 18th. For more information, contact Dory Ehrlich at 
981-5506.

The Stanford Black Student Union is sponsoring a high school conference 
on April 2nd titled “Breaking Down Barriers to Success.”   There will 
be workshops and seminars.  Open to students in grades 9-12.  Cost:  
$15.  Applications available in the College/Career Center.  Deadline:  
March 18.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
The list of summer opportunities is now available in the College/Career 
Center.  Come by and see the wide range of programs available.  
Following are a few samples:

COSMOS - CA State Summer School for Mathematics and Science held at UC 
Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz, UC San Diego. Four week programs.  For 
more information, go to www.ucop.edu/cosmos.  Financial aid is 
available, including full scholarships.

Outward Bound West - This program offers many options for short and 
long term programs.  Cost varies with the program, but they offer many 
scholarships.  www.obwest.org  Rolling admissions, so apply soon!
