IMAGING THE VOICES OF THE PAST: Using Physics to Restore Early Sound
Recordings by Dr. Carl Haber, Senior Scientist, Berkeley Lab Physics
Division at the Berkeley High School Library, Wednesday, February 16, from
5:30 – 7 p.m.

Two Lawrence Berkeley National Lab researchers have applied the technology
used
in studying subatomic particles to revive treasured voices from the past –
by
taking images of the grooves in a recording. Physicists Vitaliy Fadeyev and
Carl Haber have found a way to digitize century-old recordings believed to
be
unplayable, and as a result, some of the music and spoken word recordings in
the
Library of Congress collection may spring back to life. These methods may
help
us gain access to and preserve recordings dating back to the late 19th and
early
20th centuries which include examples of blues, classical, Dixie, jazz and
spoken word. Come hear this fascinating talk with examples of restored
voices
and music, and learn how basic scientific research done at Berkeley Lab may
yield results of benefit in other areas of science and culture.

This program, co-sponsored by Berkeley Lab Friends of Science and the
Berkeley
High School Science Department, is free to the public.
