SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  INDIFFERENT – not caring one way or the other.  I 
am not a sports fan, so I am indifferent as to whether or not the home 
team wins.

*JUNIORS – Don’t forget to sign up for an individual meeting with me.  
Come to the College Center to sign up.

*Sophomores, juniors and seniors – sign up for CSF.  The forms are now 
available in the College/Career Center.  Eligibility is based on 
community service and points for grades in academic courses.

COLLEGE VISITS
February 15
9:30 – Western Career College and Silicon Valley College.  Four 
campuses throughout the Bay Area offering programs in design and visual 
arts, business and information systems, medical and dental, and 
biotechnology.

March 1, 10:35 – Academy of Art University.  The representative will 
speak about undergraduate programs as well as summer programs for high 
school students.

SENIOR SECTION.
*Come the College/Career Center to check your name on the Potential 
Graduation List.  If there are any problems with the spelling of your 
name or if your name is missing from the list, see Ms. Mellion in D173.

*Free workshop for students and parents by Gen and Kelly Tanabe, 
authors of Get Free Cash for College and 1001 Ways to Pay for College.  
Sunday, February 13, 3 p.m., Barnes & Noble, 5604 Bay Street, 
Emeryville.

Interested in the culinary arts?  San Francisco City College is now 
accepting applications for Fall 2005.  For a total cost of about $2,000 
(including tuition, books, tools and uniforms for 2 years) you have the 
opportunity to earn an Associate in Science College degree (60 units), 
an Award of Achievement and an American Culinary Federation Certificate 
of Completion. Job placement assistance is available to all students. 
Each semester, well-known, growing companies recruit H&R students on 
campus. Applications are available at www.ccsf.edu/cahs or by calling 
the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Program at City College of 
San Francisco at (415) 239-3152.  Deadline:  April 11.

SAN FRANCISCO STATE – The representative from SF State will be in D221 
on Wednesday, February 16 at lunchtime.  Please stop by to see her if 
you have questions.  If you still need to turn in your official 
transcript, you can give it to her at that time.

Get help filling out your financial aid documents every Tuesday and 
Thursday in the College Center from 2:30 to 4:30.  No sign-ups are 
necessary.

FAFSA WORKSHOPS – Get help filling out your FAFSA.  Students, parents, 
and guardians welcome.  February 10, 15, 24 and 25 at 3:30 p.m. in the 
Berkeley High library.  You must sign up in the College Center.

Cash for College Days – Get individual help filling out the FAFSA and 
preparing your tax returns.  To complete the FAFSA (and your tax 
returns, if you want), bring your parent or guardian, social security 
card or alien registration card and 2004 tax returns or 2004 income 
records.  All events will be held in English and Spanish. Four 
opportunities to participate:
TODAY - Thursday, February 10 – Oakland Unified School District Dr. 
Willie Harper Building, 314 East 10th Street, Oakland, 6:00 to 9:00 
p.m.
Saturday, February 12 – Eastmont Town Center, 2nd Floor, 7200 Bancroft 
Ave., Oakland, 10 am to 2 pm
Saturday, February 26 – Laney College – Forum, 900 Fallon Street, 
Oakland, CA, 10 am to 2 pm

SCHOLARSHIPS
Below are samples of the many scholarships available in the 
College/Career Center.  Don’t miss this opportunity for free money!  An 
updated list is printed every Monday.

* eQuality Scholarship - Senior from northern or central CA who has 
applied to 2 or 4 year post-secondary schools, including trade schools 
and has been involved in volunteer activities promoting equality for 
LGBT community.  Deadline:  February 21.  More info at

Scholarships for students interested in a career in public safety – 
fire service, emergency medical services.  Interested students should 
submit a one page statement for consideration to:  Kevin White, 
Berkeley Fire Department Station #2, 2029 Berkeley Way, Berkeley, CA 
94704.  Deadline:  March 31.

Berkeley Community Fund – Senior planning to attend 2 or 4 year college 
in the fall of 2005, minimum GPA of 2.5, participates in 
extracurricular activities, community service and/or employment.  
Applications available in the College Center or at 
www.berkfund.org/apply_for_grant.htm  $500-$3,000.  Deadline:  March 7.

FOR JUNIORS
SAT – February 16 is the late registration deadline for the March 12th 
SAT.  I am not recommending that juniors take this test in March, 
particularly students currently taking Algebra 2 and geometry, because 
I believe you will benefit from two more months of class time.  Please 
do not take it as a “practice,” because colleges will see all of your 
scores.  ACT – March 4 is the regular registration deadline for the 
April 9 ACT test.

People’s Test Preparation Service of UC Berkeley will be offering free 
SAT prep at Berkeley High School.  Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3:30-5:30, 
starting February 23.  Room G205.  To enroll, send an email with your 
full name, school name and phone number to register4ptps at yahoo.com or 
call (510) 642-4951.

FOR ALL GRADES
Mini-University Program sponsored by the UC Berkeley chapter of the 
Society of Women Engineers.  This is a great opportunity to get 
first-hand information about student life on campus.  You do not need 
to be planning an engineering career to participate.  Friday, February 
25, 9:30 to 4:00 p.m.  Free.  Applications available in the 
College/Career Center.

The Stanford Black Student Union is sponsoring a high school conference 
on April 2nd titled “Breaking Down Barriers to Success.”   There will 
be workshops and seminars.  Open to students in grades 9-12.  Cost:  
$15.  Applications available in the College/Career Center.  Deadline:  
March 18.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
The list of summer opportunities is now available in the College/Career 
Center.  Come by and see the wide range of programs available.  
Following are a few samples:

*Outward Bound West - This program offers many options for short and 
long term programs.  Cost varies with the program, but they offer many 
scholarships.  www.obwest.org  Rolling admissions, so apply soon!

Internship program for entering juniors and seniors (current sophomores 
and juniors) at UC San Francisco Department of Pediatrics.  Eight week 
program (mid-June through mid-August), 40 hours per week.  Students 
work in a laboratory with a mentor on a research project, attend 
seminars and tour the UCSF facilities.  Students are paid $1200 for 
their participation.  BHS can nominate five students for the program.  
If you are interested, pick up an application in the College/Career 
Center.  Return application to Ms. Abrams. Deadline:  March 18.

American University’s School of Communication – June 20-July 15.  
Courses in film, writing, photography, video production, etc.  Rolling 
admissions.  Applications available in the College/Career Center.
