SAT WORD OF THE DAY: SYNTHESIS – the combining of parts into a new
creation. Molecular biology represents the synthesis of the more
traditional disciplines of chemistry, biology and genetics.
JOB OPENING
*Student needed to do light clerical work. Contact Debbie Taylor at

PSAT SCORES
If you came to pick up your PSAT scores and they were missing, we have
received additional score reports. Pick them up in the College/Career
Center at lunch or after school.
COLLEGE VISITS
February 15
8:30 a.m. – DeVry University. Offers associate degrees in electronics
and
computer technology, health information technology and network systems
administration; bachelors degrees in biomedical fields, business
administration, computers, electronics, and information and technical
management. Sign up in the College/Career Center.
9:30 – Western Career College and Silicon Valley College.
March 1, 10:35 – Academy of Art University. The representative will
speak
about undergraduate programs as well as summer programs for high school
students.
SENIOR SECTION.
*SAN FRANCISCO STATE – The representative from SF State will be in D221
on
Wednesday, February 16 at lunchtime. Please stop by to see her if you
have questions. If you still need to turn in your official transcript,
you can give it to her at that time.
*Get help filling out your financial aid documents every Tuesday and
Thursday in the College Center from 2:30 to 4:30. No sign-ups are
necessary.
FAFSA WORKSHOPS – Get help filling out your FAFSA. Students, parents,
and
guardians welcome. February 8, 10, 15, 24 and 25 at 3:30 p.m. in the
Berkeley High library. You must sign up in the College Center.
Cash for College Days – Get individual help filling out the FAFSA and
preparing your tax returns. To complete the FAFSA (and your tax
returns,
if you want), bring your parent or guardian, social security card or
alien
registration card and 2004 tax returns or 2004 income records. All
events
will be held in English and Spanish. Four opportunities to participate:

FREE MONEY FOR COLLEGE – If you haven’t filled out the Cal Grant GPA
Information Release Form available in the College Center and the
Registrar’s office, do it now! It takes only a few minutes to fill out.
This form, along with the FAFSA, determines your eligibility for a Cal
Grant.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Below are samples of the many scholarships available in the
College/Career
Center. Don’t miss this opportunity for free money! An updated list is
printed every Monday.
Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards – Apply online at
<www.hispanicheritageawards.org> or
pick up an application at a participating Subway. Printed out
applications from the website will NOT be accepted. There are 6
categories including academic excellence, community service,
engineering &
mathematics, healthcare, journalism, and sports. Students must
demonstrate an interest in their category, academic excellence and a
commitment to community service and write an essay on the influence of
their Hispanic heritage in their lives. Scholarships range from $2,000
to
$8,000. Deadline: February 11 (received deadline)
Banatao Filipino American Scholarship - Current senior of Filipino
heritage (at least 50%) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who plans to major in
engineering, computer or physical sciences and has financial need. Five
scholarships of $5,000 each, renewable for up to three years. Deadline:
February 11.
Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund - Student of Asian
and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity and be a US citizen, US national,
permanent resident or citizen of the Freely Associated States, first
time
incoming college student in fall 2005, minimum unweighted GPA of 2.7.
$2,000. Deadline: February 15.
Scholarships for students interested in a career in public safety – fire
service, emergency medical services. Interested students should submit
a
one page statement for consideration to: Kevin White, Berkeley Fire
Department Station #2, 2029 Berkeley Way, Berkeley, CA 94704. Deadline:
March 31.
Berkeley Community Fund – Senior planning to attend 2 or 4 year college
in
the fall of 2005, minimum GPA of 2.5, participates in extracurricular
activities, community service and/or employment. Applications available
in the College Center or at <www.berkfund.org/apply_for_grant.htm>
$500-$3,000.
Deadline: March 7.

FOR JUNIORS
Saturday, February 19, 8:30 am-3:30 pm - University of San Francisco
Multicultural Junior Preview Day for African American, Latino and Native
American high school juniors. You must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 to
participate. Presentations on academics, majors, and eligibility
requirements, campus tour, meetings with admissions counselors, etc.
Space is limited to 50 students. Applications available in the College
Center. Free. Application deadline: February 9.
SAT – February 7 is the regular registration deadline for the March 12th
SAT. I am not recommending that juniors take this test in March,
particularly students currently taking Algebra 2 and geometry, because I
believe you will benefit from two more months of class time. Please do
not take it as a “practice,” because colleges will see all of your
scores.
ACT – March 4 is the regular registration deadline for the April 9 ACT
test.
*FEBRUARY 8 – Junior parent college information night. 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Berkeley High library. Enter on Allston Way at Milvia. For more
information, contact me at <iabrams at berkeley.k12.ca.us>. This event is
for parents and guardians only.
Students will receive this information at their junior English classes.
People’s Test Preparation Service of UC Berkeley will be offering free
SAT
prep at Berkeley High School. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3:30-5:30,
starting February 21. Room to be announced. To enroll, send an email

FOR ALL GRADES
The Stanford Black Student Union is sponsoring a high school conference
on
April 2nd titled “Breaking Down Barriers to Success.” There will be
workshops and seminars. Open to students in grades 9-12. Cost: $15.

18.

Stanford Medical Youth Science Program - June 19-July 24. Current
sophomore or junior with an interest in science, medicine and health
careers. Summer residential program for economically disadvantaged and
under-represented high school students including internships, lectures

California State Summer School for Mathematics & Science (COSMOS) offers
four week residential summer programs at UC Davis, Irvine, Santa Cruz
and
San Diego for high school students (grades 9-12) who excel in math and
science. Financial aid is available. For more specific information on
