STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN
February 1, 2005

Administration

1.	Have you recently lost someone close to you?  You are invited to 
join a group of students who are also dealing with the death of a 
friend or family member.  If you are interested, please tell your 
counselor or Ms. Jefferson in the Counseling Office.  The first 
meeting, is Monday, Feb. 7, at lunch in Conference Room A  (in the 
Administration building).  Food will be provided.

2.	New suicide prevention and intervention services are available.  The 
US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and mental 
Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) recently launched the National 
Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK.  In addition to the 
national hotline, a new website is being launched 
<www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org>.  Callers to the hotline will 
receive suicide prevention counseling from trained staff.

3.	Schedule changes: The counseling office will be closed for drop-ins 
and appointments until Monday, Feb. 14.  Students who need a schedule 
change can pick up a schedule change request form in front of the 
counseling office on Tues., Wed. and Thurs., Feb 1-3. Schedule change 
request forms will not be accepted after Thursday, Feb. 3.  Counselors 
will do their best to complete changes as quickly as possible.  Revised 
schedules and passes to meet with counselors will be delivered to 
students' currently scheduled classes, so students must attend all of 
their scheduled classes until they receive a revised schedule.  Thank 
you for your patience and understanding.

4.	Come to the Health Center Grand Opening on February 3 from 4:00-8:00 
p.m.  Bring your friends and family.  Everyone is welcome!  There will 
be food and refreshments.

5.	Great opportunity:   Proctors needed second semester, periods 4 and 
5, to accompany a student to the YMCA.  Please contact Tamar Chaet in 
H106.

Clubs
1.	The first spring semester student council meeting will be held 
Thursday, Feb.3, in C400 (first Thursday of the semester).  All second 
period representatives should attend.  New agenda items so come and 
represent your 2nd period class.

2.	Come to an informational meeting for the spring musical “A Chorus 
Line.”  Hear the music, meet the director: TODAY AT LUNCH in A203 (Mr. 
Winer’s room).

3.	Poetry Slam:  Come back to where it all started, where the first 
time poets encounter the veterans, where the cultures and styles and 
flavors meet, where everything positive about BHS is at its greatest!  
Wednesday, February 2, 2005.  Sign up to read, 6:30 p.m; Poems at 7:00 
p.m; Room G210.
$1 donation will be accepted at the door, to cover prize.  Note:  This 
poetry event will be one of the semi-final qualifying rounds for Youth 
Speaks national poetry slam.

      4.  San Francisco tutoring due Friday, Feb. 4, in the College 
Career Center.


Sports
1.	All boys interested in going out for the golf team, call Coach Dang 
at 510-540-5738.  First day of practice is February 7 in Tilden Park at 
4:00 p.m.

2.	Neff will be taking letter jackets orders on campus on Thursday, Feb 
3, at lunch and after school in the Athletic Director's.  Pick up an 
order form in the athletic office.  Cost for letter, year of 
graduation, and sport is $10.  Checks should be made directly to Neff 
company and jackets will arrive at BHS in 6-8 weeks.  For questions 
contact Larry Rouse from the Neff company at 916-486-1820 or Kristin 
Glenchur at 644-8723.

3.	Spring Sport season begins on Monday, Feb. 7.  A complete athletic 
packet, including parent consent and physical form, must be turned in 
to the coach on the first day of tryouts.  If you played a fall or 
winter sport, and your physical is dated June 2004 or after, your 
packet has already been turned in.

4.	BHS Baseball Tryouts begin on Monday, Feb. 7:  Freshman at Willard 
Middle School 6:00-8:00 p.m.  All others at San Pablo Park 4:00-7:00 
p.m.  Players must have a completed athletic packet, including a 
physical exam, and at least a 2.0 semester GPA in order to try out.  
Packets are available in the athletic office or in Mr. Moellering’s 
room ( C-128).

5.	Boys Tennis:  Informational meeting Friday, February 4th at the east 
bleachers, 3:30 p.m.  First practice on Monday, February 7.  Bring 
water bottle.  Best contact <buddhabanana at hotmail.com>.

	
Senior Section
1.	For Juniors, Saturday, February 19, 8:30 am – 3:30 pm – University 
of San Francisco Multicultural Junior Preview Day for African American, 
Latino and Native American high school juniors.  You must have a 
minimum GPA of 2.75 to participate.  Presentations on academics, 
majors, and eligibility requirements, campus tour, meetings with 
admissions counselors,etc.  Space is limited to 50 students.  
Applications available in the College Center.  Free.  Application 
deadline: February 9.

2.	SAT- February 7 is the regular registration deadline for the March 
12th SAT.  I am not recommending that juniors take this test in March, 
particularly students currently taking Algebra 2 and geometry, because 
I believe you will benefit from two more months of class time.  Please 
do
not take it as a practice, because colleges will see all of your 
scores. ACT – March 4 is the regular registration deadline for the 
April 9 ACT tests.

3.	Juniors – Free SAT prep at Berkeley High School.  Wednesdays and 
Thursdays, 3:30 -5:30, starting February 21.  Room to be announced.  To 
enroll, send an email with your full name, school name and phone number 
to <register4ptps at yahoo.com> or call 510-642-4951.

4.	For all grades – Summer Camps and Programs Fair for students ages 
8-18. Piedmont High School (333 Highland Ave., Piedmont), Monday, 
February 7, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Meet directors from overnight camps, 
trips, community service, and educational programs.  For more

5.	FOR SENIORS – Cash for College Days- Get individual help filling out 
the FAFSA and preparing your tax returns.  To complete the FAFSA (and 
tax returns, if you want), bring your parent or guardian, social 
security card or alien registration card and 2004 tax returns or 2004 
income records.  All events will be held in English and Spanish.  Four 
opportunities to participate see Ilene Abrams for more details.


Events/ Performance
1.  Want $20?  Come share your opinions about the health center and eat 
free food.  All students are welcome, including those who have never 
been to the health center.  Stop by the health center to sign up.

Sales

1.	Yearbooks are on sale for $65.00 in H102 every Tuesday and Thursday 
during lunch or zero period.
