Administration
1. New teachers: You can still apply for BSEP carryover money. See
Belinda McDaniel ASAP! We have an extended deadline until Monday,
February 10th. Please don’t delay. This is your last chance to get
money for this 2004-2005 school year.
2. Have you recently lost someone close to you? You are invited to
join a group of students who are also dealing with the death of a
friend or family member. If you are interested, please tell your
counselor or Ms. Jefferson in the Counseling Office. First meeting is
Monday, February 7th.
3. New suicide prevention and intervention services are available. The
US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) recently launched the National
Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK. In addition to the
national hotline, a new website is being launched
<]www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org>. Callers to the hotline will
receive suicide prevention counseling from trained staff.
4. Attention juniors and seniors: If you want credit for working,
check with Mrs. Horikoshi in C317 regarding Work experience credit.
Clubs
1. The first spring semester student council meeting will be held
Thursday, February 3rd in C400 (first Thursday of the semester). All
second period representatives should attend. New agenda items. Come
and represent your 2nd period class. No student council meetings
during finals. Good luck!
2. Hey: Are you a member of CSF? Well guess what? The deadline to
turn in your tutoring has been extended to January 31st. You can turn
it into Ms. Harris along with your fundraising of $15 in the College
Career Center. Happy new semester.
3. Poetry Slam: Come back to where it all started, where the first
time poets encounter the veterans, where the cultures and styles and
flavors meet, where everything positive about BHS is at its greatest!
Wednesday, February 2, 2005. Sign up to read, 6:30 p.m.; Poems at 7:00
p.m.; Room G210. $1 donation will be accepted at the door, to cover
prize. Note: This poetry event will be one of the semi-final
qualifying rounds for Youth Speaks national poetry slam.
Sports
1. All boys interested in going out for the golf team, call Coach Dang
at 510-540-5738. First day of practice is February 7 in Tilden Park at
4:00pm.
2. Neff will be taking letter jackets orders on campus on Thursday, Feb
3 at lunch and after school in the athletic office. Pick up an order
form in the athletic office. Cost for letter, year of graduation, and
sport is $10.
3. Spring sport season begins on Monday, February 7th. A complete
athletic packet, including parent consent and physical form, must be
turned in to the coach on the first day of tryouts. If you played a
fall or winter sport, and your physical is dated June 2004 or after,
your packet has already been turned in.
4. Voluntary preseason conditioning is going on for many athletic
teams. See Humphrey Garrett in the Strength and Conditioning room
after school or Athletic Director Kristin Glenchur.
Senior Section
1. Seniors: Apply for one of the many scholarships available in the
College Center. Don’t miss out on these great opportunities. Come by
to get the complete list. Some sample scholarships are:
Asian and Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund –
Student of Asian and or Pacific Islander ethnicity and be a US citizen,
US national, permanent resident or citizen of the Freely Associated
States, first time incoming college student in fall 2005, minimum
unweighted GPA of 2.7. Deadline: February 15.
Berkeley Community Fund – Senior planning to attend 2 or
4 year college in the fall of 2005, minimum GPA of 2.5, participates in
extracurricular activities, community service and or employment.
Deadline: March 7.
2. The Stanford Black Student Union is sponsoring a high school
conference on April 2nd titled “Breaking Down Barriers to Success.”
There will be workshops and seminars. Open to students in grades 9-12.
Cost: $15. Applications available in the College/Career Center.
Deadline: March 18.
3. FOR SENIORS – Get help filling out your FAFSA and get more
information on financial aid resources. Tuesday, February 22, 6:00 –
8:00 p.m. Alameda High School Cafeteria, 2201 Encinal Avenue, Alameda.

4. Juniors – Free SAT prep at Berkeley High School. Wednesdays and
Thursdays, 3:30 -5:30, starting February 21. Room to be announced. To
enroll, send an email with your full name, school name and phone number
to ]register4ptps at yahoo.com or call 510-642-4951.
5. For all grades – Summer Camps and Programs Fair for students ages
8-18. Piedmont High School (333 Highland Ave., Piedmont), Monday,
February 7, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Meet directors from overnight camps,
trips, community service, and educational programs. For more

Events/ Performance
1. Black and White WINTER BALL (semi formal) on January 28th at Zazoo’s
Restaurant —15 Embarcadero West, Oakland. Winter Ball tickets are on
sale for $30 at lunch on the Community Theater steps. Prices will go
up soon so buy your tickets now.
Sales
1. Yearbooks are on sale for $65.00 in H102 every Tuesday and Thursdas
during lunch or zero period.
