Administration
1. The Berkeley high School Site Council will meet on Monday, January
24,
2005, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. In the school library. On the agenda are a
report on recycling and a proposal by the Academic Choice Program. All
representatives and alternates should attend, and anyone interested is

2. The final schedule is available in the admin office if you need a
copy.

3. REWARD- For the return of a worn and tattered address book. Please
turn it in to Belinda McDaniel.
Clubs
1. Young Women of BHS: "Speak on It" meets every Thursday at lunch in
Conference Room B. Come bring the issues that are most important to
you!
Light lunch will be served. All BHS female students are welcomed.
2. All those fans of Jeopardy: Please come to C316 for some fun and
quizzing your knowledge on a variety of subjects. January 19th at lunch
in C316.
3. Are you Gay, Straight, or something in between? Come to the
Gay/Straight Alliance every Wednesday at lunch in C218. Speak out
against Homophobia.
4. Attention BSU members: There will be a BSU/ Black Graduation meeting
tomorrow at lunch. All members that went to participate in Black
Graduation must be present at this meeting.
5. Poetry Slam: Come back to where it all started, where the first time
poets encounter the veterans, where the cultures and styles and flavors
meet, where everything positive about BHS is at its greatest!
Wednesday,
February 2, 2005. Sign up to read, 6:30 p.m.; Poems at 7:00 p.m. in
G210.
$1 donation will be accepted at the door, to cover prize. Note: This
poetry event will be one of the semi-final qualifying rounds for Youth
Speaks National Poetry Slam.
Sports
1. All boys interested in going for the golf team, call Coach Dang at
510-540-5738. First day of practice is February 7 in Tilden Park at
4:00 p.m.
2. Attention all new and returning swimmers and divers: There will be a
short informational meeting for the 2005 Swimming and Diving team at
lunchtime in the new BHS pool bleachers. Any interested athlete should
attend.
3. Students interested in joining the Crew team should practice at the
erg
room, which is across from the softball field. The men’s team practices
on Tuesdays at 4:00 p.m.; the women’s team practices on Wednesdays at
4:00 p/m. For

Senior Section
1. There are many scholarship applications in the College Center. Come
by
to check them out and get free money for college. Some sample
scholarships include: Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards- apply online at
<www.hispanicheritage awards.org> or pick up an application at a
participating Subway.
Printed out applications from the web site will NOT be accepted. There
are six categories. You must write
an essay on the influence of their Hispanic heritage in their lives.
Deadline: February 11th. Scholarships range from $2,000 to $8,000.
2. Sam Walton Community Scholarship ($1,000) – Senior with a minimum 2.5
GPA who has taken either the SAT or the ACT and can prove financial
need.
Applications available at <www.walmartfoundation.org>. Deadline is
February 1st.
3. January 17: Deadline to turn in Midyear School Report Forms to the
College Center. This is required for most schools that requested a
counselor recommendation. It is not required for the UC’s and most Cal
campuses. Paperclip a regular business-sized envelope with one stamp on
it to the college Mid-Year Report form and a transcript request form.
Write “Midyear report” on the top of each Transcript Request Form.
Events/ Performance
1. Warm Coat Drive! Bring warm coats to distribute to homeless adults.
These coats will be distributed at the community meal at University
Lutheran Chapel on Saturday, January 22nd. Bring your coats to A203 and
drop them in the box.
2. Black and White (semi-formal) WINTER BALL on January 28th at Zazoo’s
Restaurant (15 Embarcadero West, Oakland). Winter ball tickets are on
sale for $30 at lunch in the Community Theater steps. Prices will go up
so buy your tickets now.
Sales
1. Yearbooks are on sale for $65.00 every Tuesday and Thursday during
lunch or zero period.
